‘Progressive’ Media MIA on Belafonte's Obama Criticism

Rate: 4 Flag

Harry Belafonte has said that Obama doesn’t need a second term. Belafonte essentially believes that we all know what we need to know — about the sitting United States president, and that a second term would not reveal anything new. In an interview on the Smiley and West radio program Belafonte wondered, “[H]ow could he have had such a splendid opportunity to do more than most presidents would have ever been able to do, and he let that opportunity slip away from him?” Belafonte also questioned, “What legacy will he leave, having the opportunity to serve under such hugely dramatic circumstances and had such a huge impact on the universal state of things?” Additionally, he said that Obama lacked a moral compass, and without that kind of barometer needed — to guide him through his decisions — he has failed to make the requisite, necessary, rightful and proper impact (and changes).

I have a done a little research where the alternative money gets most of their money from. It turns out the foundations that fund them either get their money back door from the CIA or right wing corporations. Pretty nifty strategy, when you think of it - the CIA funding both the right and the left. The technical term for these foundations is left gatekeepers. Robert Kennedy was the first to become concerned about this. They shot him before he could complete his investigation. Check this out: http://www.questionsquestions.net/gatekeepers.html
Yeah, at least IMO the foundation funded left, is a dirty word. I don't know where Salon gets its funding, but at least they don't seem to ban people here who aren't following the Obama/party line.
[r] sean, I am forgetting the last circumstance I read not long ago about Belafonte -- but after dissing Obama STRONGLY he added at the end of the interview (maybe NY1?), "But of course I am voting for him in the next election." It totally creeped me out. If Harry has changed his mind, cool, but if he is talking out of both sides of his mouth still out of cronyism for his black brother, I am not impressed. He is a media voice that can consciousness-raise, but the cronyism "of course I am voting for him" stuff promotes more cognitive dissonance imho! libby
Yikes, if he's voting for him that is weird! And just when you think you've found someone with some integrity/a spine.
sean, this is from 12/12/11. check out the very last line!:

"Harry Belafonte's signature lyric "Day-O" made him a global icon when it was released in 1956. Even at age 84, the beloved calypso singer recently showed a Harlem audience that he's still got it.

"It was standing room only at Hueman Bookstore, when the famed actor held a book signing for his new autobiography "My Song". NY1 was given exclusive access as Belafonte reflected on his historic career where he became the first recording artist to sell one million copies of an album.

"Calypso made him a superstar, but Belafonte is most proud for standing up for what he believed in.

""I wasn’t an artist who became an activist. I was an activist who became an artist," Belafonte said.

"As an activist, he marched side by side with The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement often risking his career and his life.

"Harry Belafonte also raised millions of dollars to help Civil Rights workers and often condemned American foreign policy.

"He took some heat for calling President George W. Bush a terrorist and he does not mince words when talking about President Barack Obama either.

""I feel that what’s at stake here is Barack Obama has lost his moral compass," Belafonte said. "You said you were gonna end Guantanamo and torture. Well Guantanamo still exists and torture is still in our presence."

"Belafonte says his criticism of much of President Obama's foreign policy is not personal, but he says he takes great pride in exercising his First Amendment rights. However, the Harlem-born activist stunned the audience with this admission about the current president, saying, "I’ll tell you this much: I’m voting for him."
Well Belafonte’s judgment has not been very good in retrospect and he expected too much of Obama for reasons I have stated at Open Salon - though not in reference to HB.

His guesses have not been good in the past. Remember, literally every Oscar Sidney Poitier ever won was a role first offered to and turned down by his friend Belafonte. He even refused a role in Porgy and Bess because he thought it racist - though he later did, ‘secretly’ record it with Lina Horn and that masterwork is almost impossible to find today. Too bad for us all!

So much for lecturing others about ‘barometers’ and ‘compass’ — he got lost in his own career path. Fortunately he got good enough investment advice (real estate & the building he lives in) that he need not worry about making too many more dumb career choices.

Thought I respect him Belafonte is not a person I’d consult for wisdom and advice.

Smiley and West are also very disgruntled Obama supporters and I won’t go into West’s silly screeds except to say, that even before the snaggletooth professor decided to support Obama his first question was “Brother, where did you get the money.” So West supported Obama knowing full well where the money came from.
the health care obsession was a mistake, but I thought it might work too; hindsight--
