I have a growing list of words that I'm getting sensitive about ;).
'Responsible' - second round - is one that I'm not just sensitive to, but am learning to abhor. Technically I consider myself to be responsible - in that I try to do what I think is right and fair and moral (quick-sandy word that, 'moral').
But responsible has become a PETA buzzword.
In their lexicon 'responsible' people do not breed anything - there are after all too many animals going wanting for homes in shelters today, right? {{You might want to investigate that 'fact' before you take it onboard, by the way.}} Responsible, to them, is **taking responsibility for** whatever. In this case they want to deem us - breeders of anything - responsible for **everything**, not just what we do ourselves as individuals, but what ALL breeders do. THAT is what I'm learning to hate - the idea that I am to be held responsible for what anyone other than myself does or might do, or has done just because I am a breeder.
So I ain't goin' for it.
I am responsible for myself and what I do, period. That doesn't mean that I no longer care about others and what happens in the world around me. That doesn't mean that I'll not help whoever I can, and whatever I can. But I'm not taking responsibility for things I didn't do and didn't cause to happen.
It's like that slogan - 'friends don't let friends drive drunk'. I hate that slogan with a passion - not for what it stands for, it's a noble intent, we don't want our friends to get behind the wheel of a car drunk and cause an accident or deaths. But I am not responsible for the friend that insists on doing so when I've offered to help them avoid it. And that slogan is aimed at making the rest of us feel guilty when that friend insists on driving drunk.
Sorry, but that's not *my* responsibility or guilt, and I'm not going to own it.
Just like I'm not going to own any responsibility for what other breeders do - I'm not responsible for puppy mills, I'm not responsible for slaughter houses, I'm not responsible for thoroughbreds that break legs and get put down on the track, and I'm not *responsible* for every stray animal on the planet just because I'm a breeder.
This is not a 'one size fits all' issue. It's time that we - all of us, law makers included - quit letting 'them' rip off the responsibility that belongs to each individual for their own actions.

The difference between animal welfare, for the good of the animals - and animal rights, which to the activists simply means no more animal human bond (and once that chain is broken we can bend over and stick our heads between our own knees and.. well, ya get the idea ;).
