I'll get back to the war now, or at least one aspect of it.
Vegetarianism with regards to animal abuses - or because 'they're sentient beings and we have no right to use them without their consent'. More PETA buzz.
I like to eat meat and I won't apologize for that - I am a consumer, I'm not telling those who raise the meat how to raise it - that is their responsibility. I'm not telling them how to kill it either - that's also their responsibility.
I know what commercial chicken farms are like, I have cousins who operated one. I know what hog farms are like too, I used to work on one. And dairy farms, I worked on one of those too. PETA forgets one important point - the animals on those farms were born there, live there - it's what they know.
My dogs are all crate trained - they willingly go into their crate to sleep and eat. I have kennel dogs - they play in their kennel yard during the day, and sometimes they will sleep there too - but most of the time they're in the kennel building at night - they have dog doors, they can come and go at will, they choose to go inside at night.
I have cats in a kennel set-up as well. Mom is understandably afraid that if they were in the house she could trip and fall on one. So they visit in the house just as all of the kennel dogs do, but have a building all to themselves, with a pet door into their enclosed yard, they can go in or out as they like. And ya know what? They're just like the dogs, most of the time they're inside after dark. My cats don't roam free because we have neighbors on our road that don't watch out for critters, and we have predators close enough to do away with a cat - and small dogs. I consider their safety my responsibility, so I choose to confine them to a safer place than free roaming in today's world allows for.
And none of these animals makes a mad dash for 'freedom' when a door is open.
To add to it I was unfortunate enough to have a tree come down on a fence while I was in town, once upon a time - and the dog was waiting on me - right there by that broken down fence - when I got home.
So be a vegetarian because you don't like meat, that's fine. But don't try to tell me *I* should be one because we have no right to eat them without their permission. Don't expect me to feel any guilt for being a part of Nature's food chain - take that up with Nature ;).
And don't be telling me that my animals don't want to be here where they live, don't want to stay with me, don't want to be companions and don't want to please me. If someone is providing you with food, water, shelter and TREATS and TOYS, would you want to toss all of that and go out into the world and make it happen for yourself?
Do you really think these animals are stupid?
One more thought. Flora. I haven't yet heard anyone say we shouldn't be eating plant matter. Plants are alive too. Because most humans can't conceive of possible sentience we assume there is none, ergo it's alright to eat plants, we don't need permission for that. We are arrogant little rascals ain't we?
