Staying safe (update)

Thank you for your kind words, your support, your commiseration, and your concern. As it stands now, we plan on staying where we are. My parents offered to help with the costs of moving if we need to do it quickly. For that, I am deeply grateful. Rather than make another huge change in my girls' lives, though, I've decided to keep an eye out on available rentals in a quiet way. If something perfect comes along that we can afford, we may go ahead and break the lease and move.

If we feel any less safe or if there are other issues of concern, we might look into moving more aggressively. The doorknob on the back door has still not been replaced. The neighborhood children are eager to tell me who's dealing drugs (the children of the dealers tell the other kids).

On the positive side, some people have pointed out that, for the most part, drug dealers and even drug users aren't all that interested in children (any more than any population would be). Children don't have money. Not a very nice thought to have to consider, but it's a useful fact. I have, however, now more fully investigated the crime happenings in this apartment complex and it's really active. Breaking and entering, theft, lots of domestic abuse calls, arrests due to outstanding warrants, etc. Generally unstable.

As you can see from the back and forth even in this post, it's still a confusing situation to be living in. We love it and we also no longer feel as safe as we did before. Our windows would be really easy to get into, for example. I don't know... I only know that acting without planning is not something that will happen for us. When we make a change, we will do it knowing exactly how we will be making it happen.

As much as I don't want this blog to be a "my personal life update place," enough of you were wondering how things were going I thought this post seemed worthwhile.
