The Riverwalk - the pride of San Antonio. Which originally started as a flood-control measure. Talk about making making lemonade when all you have are lemons.

Riding high, at Halloween trick-or-treating in La Villita - the 'little village' - once a small settlement just under the walls of the Alamo. Now an adjuct to the Riverwalk.

The farm lands around the Alamo mission and old San Antonio were watered by the river, and by carefully constructed irrigation channels. This is one of them, on the grounds of the Alamo gardens. The carp are large and healthy.

Detail of brickwork at the Old Pearl Stables. They began brewing beer here so long ago that the deliveries were made by horse and wagon. Somehow this detail never features in Western movies.

Pint-sized cheerleaders at a competition going on at the Arneson River Theater last weekend. Yes, they take it seriously here, and they start 'em early.

Street musician. A bag-piper at the bus stop by one of the Riverwalk access points. Pretty good, too.

Trick or treat at La Villita. A sense of gruesome humor ... and comfortable shoes.

At the Halloween River Parade - this was obviously "The Boat of Corporate Logos."

(Just kidding. The pipes are universal. I love 'em.)
It's a mystery. Somewhat akin to the fact that there were so many Irish among the staff of the local public radio station. Que?

My friends and I went on a ghost tour and had a fantastic time - plenty of history/plenty of ghosts :)
But remember - there is no basement underneath the Alamo!
And the bagpiper did not play "Amazing Grace" - something odd and endless, with a regular marching beat to it. Didn't recognize the melody, but it did sound authentic.
About the colors of everything - very much a Mexican influence, a taste for very vivid, intense colors on buildings. I took some pictures last spring in Progresso -- one of the across-the-border towns shopping towns --- which would confirm that. One gets so used to it, that eventually other places start to look very gray and monochrome.
