Japan - Earthquake Relief Effort from Misawa AB

Rate: 1 Flag

From an email by a member of a Yahoo discussion group for FEN broadcasters - dated Sunday

About one hour ago or 12 noon Misawa time I had the privilege of watching the USAF Misawa trucks and buses convoy out the main gate on their way to the local coastal areas to provide relief assistance. A half dozen buses filled with local military and USA teams that landed here. Also a dozen 60 foot flatbeds loaded with supplies and equipment. Local townsfolk came out to the curbside to wave and bow. A very heartwarming display indeed.
The northern coastal areas near Misawa AB were hit hard by the tsunami as was Hachinohe though not much was mentioned by the media.

Misawa has just announced the all clear for tsunami. Aftershocks are all but absent now. Power is back on after 36 hours without. Base has limited power. Japan has a lot to do now to clean up and get started again. This has been one really bad week. We grieve for those not far from here.

Info can be had at Facebook under “AFN Misawa” or by visiting the Stars and Stripes online newspaper.

That was a hard event, but fortunately the Japanese are hard people too.
I think that they actually will be able to cope very well, after the first awful days of retrieval and rescue. I read on one of the news feeds this morning, that they had recovered so many dead from the piles of wreckage - that they had run out of body bags. I kind of expected that, looking at how the tsunami-waves were so full of wrack and ruin, rolling into the various locations. But --- and this is a big but --- I do not think this will have wrecked Japan so totally, as something like this would have wrecked-or re-wrecked Haiti, or some other third-world hell-hole. They are proud, relatively wealthy, cohesive and very well-organized nation. Not a building in Tokyo came down as a result of the quake itself. They will cope --- and I do not think they will be in so much need of outside charity as they are of skilled technical assistance and specific supplies and equipment right this very minute.
Sgt Mom ... such sad days for Japan ... i am much pleased to hear of this quick response to their needs from America's military ... i am now living with my daughter in San Antonio, now about a month ... i am working in Live Oak ... i'll have to take my dog to Commanche Hill sometime ... i remember your earlier pictures you posted ... Thanks for the info. My prayers go out hourly for these brave people.
