If you clicked on this post thinking I might be writing something to add to the canon of wit and interest that is Open Salon, then I'm sorry to inform you that you'll be quite disappointed. Really, this is going to be kind of boring for you. What I need is some help from a Canadian, preferably one in or near Toronto or Montreal.
You, my Anglophonic neighbors to the North, have access to a resource unavailable to us here in the States: Timothy Barnard's new English translation of André Bazin's Qu'est-ce que le cinéma? (What is Cinema?) for Caboose Books, which, due to draconian copyright laws, it is currently only available in Canada, Japan, China, and New Zealand.
For those of you who don't know Bazin, he is probably the single most important film analyst/critic/theorist in film history. Unfortunately, the English version of What is Cinema? that is currently available in the U.S.—translated by Hugh Gray in 1967 and 1971—is woefully inadequate. So too is my French. That's why I was very happy to hear so many raving reviews of this new translation.
But you, kind and gentle Canadian friend, are far closer to this book than I. If you would be willing to act as an intermediary and help me buy this book, please let me know. Hit me up with a PM. Help a brother out.
From the Caboose Books website:
For individual sales within Canada, visit Theatrebooks in downtown Toronto or the York University bookstore in suburban Toronto. In Montreal, visit Argo bookshop or the McGill University bookstore downtown or the Librairie Olivieri in the Côte des Neiges neighbourhood near the Université de Montréal.
Canadians can also order it via the interwebz, but if someone is able to pick it up, it'd save me on paying two shipping fees. (Eh, what am I saying? Beggars can't be choosers.)
So again, let me know if you can help. No rush, of course. A thousand thanks in advance, or, as Bazin would say, merci beaucoup.
