Open Call: The Second Annual OS Interviews!

Rate: 24 Flag

On March 14th, 2009, Dorinda Fox put out an open call that rocked Open Salon to its core: the Open Salon Interviews.  At the time there was one particular blogger who was garnering quite a bit of negative attention within the OS community, and the call for interviews was an attempt to inject some positivity into the scene.  And boy did it ever.  One month later there were over 85 interviews posted, and more kept rolling in.  It was AWESOME.

The concept was simple: pick a writer on Open Salon and interview him/her.  Talk about writing, talk about life, talk about sex, religion, money, politics: nothing was taboo! (Okay, mostly they were interviews about writing.  Dorinda posted some excellent sample questions in her original post.)  The interviews provided excellent insight into our little community of writers, but, since that fateful March of aught-nine, the face of Open Salon has changed quite a bit.  Old, beloved writers have moved on or tapered off; new, equally-beloved writers have stepped in to fill the void.  The time, my friends, is right.

Writers of Open Salon, your mission, should you chose to accept it: choose an Open Salon writer (or two! Or three!) to interview.  Post the interview on your blog.  Tag it “OS Interview.”

If you’re having frightening flashbacks to those hellish weeks before Homecoming and Prom, never fear!  Unlike taking your sister to the big dance, it is perfectly acceptable to interview yourself.  We tend to lean a bit to the left here, so go ahead practice self-love with immodest abandon!  I would only place one restriction on the self-interview, though: before you interview yourself, you must first interview another member of Open Salon.  You may be worried that no one will ask you for an interview, but so may the person you choose to interview.  And funnier things have happened with Karma...

So that's the proposal.  Anyone up for it?

Update:

Okay, so we're up for it, it sounds like.  Good. Let's say we try to get these posted en masse on  Wednesday, March 10th.   That's a soft deadline.  Don't let this get in the way of all the other great pieces you have in the pipeline, however!  Keep that good writin' acomin'!!

Don't forget to spread the word: it's bad enough worrying if you'll get a date to prom, it's even worse if you see everyone dressed up and wonder where they're off to.  This is an opportunity to showcase the breadth and depth of our community: the more, the merrier!

Excellent idea! I had just come on to OS when those started popping up like mushrooms, and it was a very cool Open Call!
It was fun the first time around...let's do it again!
Thanks Shaggy. I think doing this again is most excellent. Last time there were a few people who were upset that they were not asked to the prom/to be interviewed. My idea was that people should be proactive in interviewing others -- or a pair could interview each other. It was not to create a popularity contest. So if no one has asked then please ask to interview someone else and begin a conversation.

Thanks again Shaggy.
Very excellent idea. I liked it the last go round.
'Tis fun reading them and getting to know something more about our fellow OSer's.
Shaggy, we be neighbors! Wanna interview at Harvest, over the fresh beets? ;-)
Has it been a year already? Wow. Great Idea.
Green: or perhaps, as the days get warmer, JP Licks. Maybe the new falafel place on Centre...
fantastic idea! and there is a writer with a pink-punk-haired Troll avatar on your reading list... they look interesting...
Look out, Nova, you might be getting ready to bite off more than you could chew... :)
Great idea - I have loved reading the "letters to myself at 17," and look forward to learning even more about my fellow OSers.

P.S. I lived in Jamaica Plain for four years, on Centre Street...glad to know JP Licks is still in business!
No kidding! JP Licks is still large and in charge! :)
I LOVED the interviews. You never know what they might inspire either ...

hahahaha

I just went back and read my interview of Jodi and I laughed in spite of myself. Who knew that something so silly would inspire a years worth of dirty haiku? hahahaha
This sounds like a good time!
I would love to read about the writing styles and personal things that I'm curious about. I'm way to boring of a person, but there are some very interesting people that I would love to know more about!
Love it! I'm in.
I was just thinking about these interviews. Good of you to actually do something about it.
I interviewed the amazing poet John Guzlowski, who still posts here a bit. It turned into an amazing series of emails that ended up with us both posting poems. One of my favorite OS experiences - maybe even my very favorite.
Rock it, people! Invite someone and go for a ride.
Thanks for suggesting this, shaggylocks.
What a great concept! I'm excited to participate and already know who I want to interview. Thanks so much for the lead and to Dorinda for the original idea. I look forward to reading them.
I was a teensy bit too new last year when the originals came out, I didn't really know any of you.

Now, however, I can't wait to read the results.
Hmmm. Okay.

This is a grand idea! I missed the first one by just a hair's breath, having joined OS on the 18th and it took me a month after that just to get my feet on the ground. I would love to take part in the second one. Is there a time limit?
Last year there was a designated day when we were all supposed to post our interviews. What do you say we do that again? It's okay if they come out a little before or after, but does one week sound good? Wednesday the 10th?

Don't forget to spread the word; we don't want anyone to feel left out!
3/10/10 then?
I can't wait.

~bump~
I posted an interview with Robin Sneed!

I didn't know about the Open Call for interviews. Thanks for the info.
I totally forgot about interviews. Great idea! I can't wait to see what's really inside this community :)
Gwen-
I'll be sure to add your interview with Robin to the roll call.
:)
This should be interesting! A lot of hard work went into these interviews and it was a wonderful way to get to know members of this community.
Cartouche: last time you held down like 7 or 8 of those interviews all by yourself, if I remember correctly. Hope we get a repeat performance... :)
