A Child

Rate: 17 Flag
child

Imagine
this child
the one who is impressed
with the sound of a rattle
safe against his mother's chest
sitting
held
by a long comforting arm
resting on a rocker
reaching
hesitantly, for something
new
in his world
this child
who sees
it all with new eyes
this child who hears
the sounds of your heart,
so familiar
to him
comforted, secure
he knows that you
are his
and he is yours
he
belongs
to
a family
Yet
his curiosity,
his smile
are his own
he reaches, tentatively
Yet
he is the new world
representing hope, courage and knowledge,
he crosses  an ocean 20 years later
to experience the power to change his world;
to be a part of the change in our world.
You remember.

It's amazing how far they fly, and how soon it happens, and no matter what they become they are always remembered sitting in your lap, looking up at you with innocence.
Oh, the twenty years that pass too soon...lovely.
What a pleasant surprise. Your talent is boundless.
This made me cry. I wish I could have their childhood all over again.
Rated with hugs
I find it difficult to look back some days... one never knows what 20 years will bring. The eyes of a child hold so much possibility though, hope. I remember.
I love how everything they see is new to a child, to be seen only once for the first time. Great Poem!
Lea: Yes, how soon it all happens. Yesterday I was here and one was fretting on passing a physics final in Milwaukee, one trying to decide if the honors program was worth it in Florida and so I said to the one in Germany, "I have had a tough day, I flunked physics and then decided the honors program really was not for me!" He said, "Oh, and you burned your hand cooking!" "OMG, Really? I said. "Are you all right?" "Yes, he said and held his hand up for me to see on skype." So then he said, " So get it right Mom, you flunked physics, decided the honors program really was not for you and you also burned your hand cooking. Got it?" Ah, kids.

sophieh: I would not have believed it back then, but I have come to know it.

Fay: Thank you Fay!

Linda: I have done my share of crying, sometimes it seems for no reason, but I am just noticing all the things that have changed, that I cannot control and wonder if there is something else I should be doing. Probably cleaning the house right about now....
Gabby: I know it is a different journey for so many, much of it just how life is. I am so grateful for all the time I had with them. I really am. The wonder and newness of it all changed me for the better.

scanner: I think the essence of seeing something the first time, with limited knowledge, just utterly intuitive is so childlike and if a person can retain some of that in their lives, they will always be someone filled with wonder too. When I read some of what people write here, I am sometimes filled with such wonder, at how they did that, turned that phrase, made me think, made me see. It is something to have all this before us here, we are seeing so much that is new.
I don't think the sound of a mother's heart is ever forgotten. - This is just lovely, eloquent writing, Sheila.

Kudos!
Catherine: Thank you! There is so much they remember and me too.
Vanessa: Yes, they do and when I see their friends, some who lived here practically in high school, I wonder at all the changes in just a few short years. I was stuck looking at some pictures the other day and oh my. I don't know where the time went.
So true. Nicely expressed .. missing and proud of your boy.. good reasons. Thanks for this today..
So exceptionally poignant.~r
Rita: All of them are really great kids, but this one is very far away right now. So that is a challenge on some levels.

Joan: Thank you, and it was kind of what came to mind for this open call. This will be the first holiday apart from all of us and his twin...but thank goodness for skype!
Dosen't parenthood provoke the strangest mix of emotions? The being born and the semi leaving and then one day you know they are gone. You speak, you email or tweet and sometimes see them too but they are gone into adult lives of their own and you can only enter a little into their futures as your own ebbs. r
Rosy: You could not have put it more eloquently. Really. That is the truth. I think it is harder on my husband than on me, if you can imagine that.
Sheila, I feel the love and comfort of a mother for her new-born child and also the power of hope and courage for the future within this. Wow. Just so beautiful.

Thank you for taking this on .... I am in awe of the beauty here.
very nice piece, sheila. all those "seems like yesterday" days ... sigh.
Kate: Thank you, it was a good open call, the picture was the inspiration.

Femme: Yes, the time flies and lives change. Thank you for stopping by.
Reminds me of my own son - working for an NGO in India - I call him Ghandi-Jon rated
Lovely, and I agree with sophieh...how quickly the time passes!
Were they angels would we clip their wings to prevent them from flying away? I doubt it. Our bonds bring them back to us no matter how far they go. It's the purest of any love.

Trish: That is totally awesome! I bet he has had some wonderful adventures, does he write about them at all?

JD: Yes, I enjoyed each stage so far and was quite surprised how they unfolded and how our lives went, I look forward to see them blossom further.

Fusun: You are so right. You cannot clip wings that you must fly with and this is the entire issue at many times during their lives. You have said it very eloquently. Thank you for stopping by.
You took this so far Sheila, in poetry and comments ; such a tribute to a child, and the photo is perfect. Thank you.
Kim: Thanks for stopping by. I have enjoyed being a mother!
