The Night Before & The Morning After, SNOWMAGEDDON

Rate: 20 Flag

Snowtopolis in the Midwest. WISH YOU WERE HERE!

fachwerk haus

The night before when thundersnow was roaring, Fachwerkhaus under siege.

lane

As the wind began to blow the drifting snow would begin to make itself known, from flatness to fullness, sculptural explosion!

shop

The depth of snow at a local business was astounding, the morning after.

shop 2

The Mickey antenna is the only clue to a car that really, really wanted to go to school in Florida, but got turned down for a cooler model.

shop 3

Yeah, big drifts, snow in trucks and well, a mini business complex, or better known as  SNOWTOPOLIS.

shop 5

This is what had to be dug out for the folks to get into their shop door, then the real fun began, clearing all the cars to plow the lot. That was after they cleared the drives in the neighborhood, just to be nice.

Chicago, a train ride away, is such a fantastic city! The Daly Plaza has a special snow removal apparatus. Small loaders clear the snow and deposit it into a special snow melter which carries the resulting water to an underground pipe and away. This is where the Christkindl Market is held annually and the farmers market in season. Many people cut through this on the way to different parts of the city, it is not far from the Metra station, it was one of my favorite paths!

whoa, sheila. i've talked to family back there, but these photos are jaw-dropping. those drifts!!!! and thanks for the daley plaza vid - am sending that around to some folks i know. great piece, just great.
OMFG that looks terrible. Thank the almighty duck I'm far enough away to only have little flurries.

Great photos!
Great pictures. And thank you for reminding me of why I remain in California, despite the Surreal Estate, and the high cost of living. =o)

I keep saying, everyone needs to take a snow-removing lesson from Chicago. Here, in Maryland, school was out on Monday because there was a prediction of snow...it rained.
Yup, that's what it looks like. Nice job capturing the sense of it. :)
That video was amazing!!!

For someone who's never seen snow like that ... well.. I am amazed!!! Wow!
Great pictures! That time lapse was a cool way to wrap it up. I found one from our neighborhood.

Looks like this could stick around a while.
So white and so cold...Looks like. I have never experienced it, but if it gets any worse maybe this is the year in Florida!
As Hermionedwith said.... "Wow..."
Thanks everyone for visiting, all the plowing and shoveling is catching up with folks and they are moving rather slow today! My son finished his lab early and headed back from Milwaukee to lend a hand. It will be a busy couple of days, but hopefully we are done with the blizzard thundersnows. We are not plowed back to our barn yet, and in order to work on the 49 Chevy pick up that is important!
Yea well - mid 70s today with a touch more humidity!

Happy Super Bowl Day! / R
Toritto: In the midst of the thundersnow, our K sent a picture to her dad's phone of the ocean and waving palm trees. Stinker! Ha.
I just came back to Saudi from England where they were complaining about the cold - but nothing like that. That reminds me of Edmonton in the winter. Rated for potential snow giants!
Windy too. Those flags were WHIPPING. Thanks for posting the time lasped vid and I added a special thanks to my gratitude list today - that I don't own that store! Where do you even start?
The snow looks so inviting, I could trade my tropical paradise in a heartbeat.
Great city, Chicago. It proves it time and again. No wonder Europeans consider it the quintessential American city.

Second to none, says this New Yorker. Thanks for the snow pix.
Leon: Thanks for stoppin'!
I hear you...this year has been absurd...glad to finally escape to Florida!
