"The 8.8-magnitude quake, the most powerful earthquake ever hit Japan in at least 100 years, struck at 2:46 p.m. on Friday local time! The 1923 Great KantÅÂÂÂÂ earthquake, the previously biggest earthquake in Japan history, was 7.9-magnitude!" Kazu F. said earlier today on face book.
Kazu is a very interesting person that I met through Jane Robertson. Both have been active in United Nations efforts. Jane is with the United Nations Population Fund and has written a book and created a movement called
34, ooo, ooo Friends( http://www.34millionfriends.org/)
Kazu is very active in the United Nations Peace efforts, including:
- PAX 2100 Foundation
- Santa Barbara Coalition for Global Dialogue
- United Nations Association-USA, Santa Barbara
Kazu continues to report from Tokyo:
"Thanks God that I was safe and OK, but I experiences HUGE shocks of HUGE earthquake this afternoon! Many public transportation is not working including airplanes and trains, land lines and cell phone lines are busy and hard to get, many places are out of electricity, and many people are staying at the natural disaster emergency shelters! I hope my family, relatives and friends are also safe and OK!
~
Since 2:46pm this afternoon, we've still been experiencing over 100 small earthquakes even now!
~
I have a glass of water on the desk in front of me right now, and water is constantly moving because of small earthquakes which we're still experiencing since 2:46pm on Friday in Japan time!
~
We have no control of natural disasters, and we feel powerless and have limits as human beings! But, especially moment like this, we need to stay strong, positive, and hopeful to reach out, to help, and to support each other! I also appreciate all your thoughts and prayers very much because I believe in power of thoughts and prayers! Thank you so much for all your concern about safety of people in Japan!"

" Dozens of fires were reported in northern prefectures of Fukushima, Sendai, Iwate and Ibaraki. Collapsed homes and landslides were also reported in Miyagi.
Japan's worst previous quake was in 1923 in Kanto, an 8.3-magnitude temblor that killed 143,000 people, according to USGS. A 7.2-magnitude quake in Kobe city in 1996 killed 6,400 people.
Japan lies on the "Ring of Fire" - an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones stretching around the Pacific where about 90 percent of the world's quakes occur, including the one that triggered the Dec. 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami that killed an estimated 230,000 people in 12 nations. A magnitude-8.8 temblor that shook central Chile last February also generated a tsunami and killed 524 people."CBS WORLD NEWS

We still have tsunami warning sirens going off here.

Makes me nervous--the Ring of Fire has been pretty active on that side of the Pacific, lately. And that nuclear note added to natural devastation is worrying....

Just because humans don't feel it, every inch of this earth feels it. I wonder how many nuclear facilities and other things attached to terra firma are really affected. We know so little and think we know a lot. Scary.
l'Heure: Yes, devastating and frightening.
Yumiko's sister in Tokyo lives with a Canadian man, and they, too are ready to leave Jim's home in Canada.
