"The 8.8-magnitude quake, the most powerful earthquake ever hit Japan in at least 100 years, struck at 2:46 p.m. on Friday local time! The 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, the previously biggest earthquake in Japan history, was 7.9-magnitude!" Kazu F. said earlier today on face book.

Kazu is a very interesting person that I met through Jane Robertson. Both have been active in United Nations efforts. Jane is with the United Nations Population Fund and has written a book and created a movement called

34, ooo, ooo Friends( http://www.34millionfriends.org/)

Kazu is very active in the United Nations Peace efforts, including:

  •  PAX 2100 Foundation
  •  Santa Barbara Coalition for Global Dialogue
  •  United Nations Association-USA, Santa Barbara

Kazu continues to report from Tokyo:

"Thanks God that I was safe and OK, but I experiences HUGE shocks of HUGE earthquake this afternoon! Many public transportation is not working including airplanes and trains, land lines and cell phone lines are busy and hard to get, many places are out of electricity, and many people are staying at the natural disaster emergency shelters! I hope my family, relatives and friends are also safe and OK!

Since 2:46pm this afternoon, we've still been experiencing over 100 small earthquakes even now!

I have a glass of water on the desk in front of me right now, and water is constantly moving because of small earthquakes which we're still experiencing since 2:46pm on Friday in Japan time!

We have no control of natural disasters, and we feel powerless and have limits as human beings! But, especially moment like this, we need to stay strong, positive, and hopeful to reach out, to help, and to support each other! I also appreciate all your thoughts and prayers very much because I believe in power of thoughts and prayers! Thank you so much for all your concern about safety of people in Japan!"

Dozens of fires were reported in northern prefectures of Fukushima, Sendai, Iwate and Ibaraki. Collapsed homes and landslides were also reported in Miyagi.

Japan's worst previous quake was in 1923 in Kanto, an 8.3-magnitude temblor that killed 143,000 people, according to USGS. A 7.2-magnitude quake in Kobe city in 1996 killed 6,400 people.

Japan lies on the "Ring of Fire" - an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones stretching around the Pacific where about 90 percent of the world's quakes occur, including the one that triggered the Dec. 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami that killed an estimated 230,000 people in 12 nations. A magnitude-8.8 temblor that shook central Chile last February also generated a tsunami and killed 524 people."CBS WORLD NEWS

The world has indeed become a very small place through our communication. When I read Kazu's remarks today, my heart went out to him and his family. He is visiting Tokyo, and while he is there in Japan, he is also unaware of the fate of his friends and family in the same country due to communication issues in the areas hardest hit. My very best to all in Japan who right now will be dealing with at least 10 billion in property damage, from earliest estimates and many deaths. It is truly a huge disaster which will have many ramifications for the nation and perhaps the world. Located on the "Ring of Fire" there has been increased activity these last several weeks.
I hope he is okay.
We still have tsunami warning sirens going off here.
rated with hugs
Linda: I hope you all will be safe too. I always forget the geographic proximity, we sit in the middle here so everything seems to be on the other side of the world from our point, although we have an active fault line, several in Illinois and occasionally we too have quakes. Not for a while though and nothing like everyone else, and no tsunami because not a big enough body of water around. Feel better too.
I'm listening to Obama's press conference as I write ,and he's talking about the nuclear reactors in Japan. There seems to be one that something is wrong with, but it's "top Secret" as usual. But we are sending nuclear experts there. Why?
scanner: I just heard a bit this morning when I was looking at this that a nuclear tower cooling mechanism appeared to be malfunctioning and so they evacuated people within a 100 mile area for safety and they said there was no immediate danger. Sounds like there might be something more if you heard that from the president. I suppose there is a real danger that they cannot solve themselves.....
Oh my the event and aftermath is just devastating and more. Thanks for these insights into their situation.
Algis: Thanks for reading and commenting....it is devastating.
Lest we humans should nurse any thought that we have true control over our planet....

Makes me nervous--the Ring of Fire has been pretty active on that side of the Pacific, lately. And that nuclear note added to natural devastation is worrying....

Dear God, the lives lost are a horror. I think we forget we all share one planet, I'm well landlocked in Boise but the earth has only one core and one big surface. BSU is how far this earthquake was felt by seismic equipment, check it out.

Just because humans don't feel it, every inch of this earth feels it. I wonder how many nuclear facilities and other things attached to terra firma are really affected. We know so little and think we know a lot. Scary.
Shiral: The nuclear stuff is scary too, now two plants are having issues of the 22 in the affected area. There are something like 55 nuclear plants in Japan.

l'Heure: Yes, devastating and frightening.
I saw clips of the disaster on Democracy Now, this morning. Horrific
A.Walrond: A frightening disaster.
If the nuclear power plants melt down and send up a mushroom cloud [or 2] that could affect millions of people, affecting Hawaii and the west coast of California. Then the stock market could crash due to all of this crisis; there is so much unknown right now. We can hope for the best but must prepare for the worst.
Deborah: There is always some disaster looming these days. Nuclear was one I had not been thinking of, but alas, it could be.
The sixth reactor has jst been reported to be in serious danger - we are ready to borrow money from some close friends or the bank; and take the next plane out.

Yumiko's sister in Tokyo lives with a Canadian man, and they, too are ready to leave Jim's home in Canada.

This is spiraling out of control. We may be forced to just blow away to Phuket or Hawaii.

Just checked a world time clock and see it's 3:45 in the afternoon so I'm guessing you're making your way somewhere which is good, get out now. Thanks for posting this morning.

Of course no need to respond to comments, we're just grateful to know you're both safe, so sorry this has happened to everyone. You're in my thoughts and prayers and will remain there, Love and Godspeed to you both.
markinjapan: My thoughts are with you. Let us know when you are safe...

l'Heure: Thank you for your comment. I was out of town this weekend in Indy and not with computer access.
