While on our recent trip to Luebeck, we had the opportunity to pass through what is also known as the "parlour" of the Queen of the Hanseatic League's beautiful Market Square. The buildings creating the square reflect both the wealth and the historical architectural themes.of this very old city.
The world famous Marian Kirche borders this square dating from about 1435, a building called the Kaak, kind of stockade for dishonest merchants, which was first built in the 15th century, the town hall which dates from the 13th century, the Danzelhaus from 1298 which was a kind of festival hall, then the Neues Gemach from 1442, the Ratskeller from around the 13th century, and so on.
The most fantastic thing is that most of this has been rebuilt from the ashes of the 1942 bombing of the city by the RAF. They were using original foundations, remaining bricks and building materials, and structures were reinstalled through the 1950's and onward. The process in Luebeck remains today, there are many ruins in the city and where you find them, they must be kept, new buildings are built upon the foundations, footprints, of the ruins by code of the historical Innenstadt authorities.
Enjoy this stroll through spring in an old square, it is inviting you to relive some history and appreciate the fragrance of spring.

Entering the square we saw the tents of the flower sellers.

The Kaak was also there, once very popular to control dishonest merchants.

The Renaissance facade.

The vegetable and fruit seller stand.

Lovely ready made bouquets, they were very appealing.

Wonderful flowers waiting to go home with someone.

More ready made bouquets. I wanted them all!

Plants and single stems of some interesting species.

A lovely line of fragrant rose bunches. You could not help but appreciate their smell.

Zeitgeist is a hard shadow to eat.
I am happy to see this post and your beautiful photos! I love seeing and learning about new places, especially learning a bit about history (I've been recently addicted to ancestry research).
Later this week I also have a post going up on flowers. They seem to be miracles to me…that something so beautiful can just come up from the ground all on its own.
I rated your post. All the best,
Janice
