100th Anniversary of the Passat, Travemunde Germany

Rate: 10 Flag

In Germany last month we took the time to go to the nearby Baltic seaside resort city of Travemunde. This place is just  short ride by train or car from Luebeck, where our son is a student. Our first weekend in town was the anniversary of a very famous boat, the Passat. It was celebrated with a festival of tall ships which are in a special sisterhood together, they are the great sailing ships of the centuries gone by.

The famous landmark, the Passat, celebrated its 100th birthday the weekend of May 12th thru the 15th, 2011. In 1911 the Passat, known as the legendary Flying-P-Liner was completed by Blom and Voss in the Hamburg shipyard. The maiden voyage was between Hamburg and around the Cape Horn to Chile. The Passat could sail up to 18 knots and successfully met the competition that the steam boat sector was then providing.

The ship, which weathered many a dangerous storm is anchored in this seaside/resort town since 1960 and is now a museum.

The huge birthday party included many fascinating tall ships, sailors and actually ship lovers from all over the entire world. There were what is called, "shanty choirs", from all over providing entertainment. We listened to a Polish group of singing sailors.

There was a giant marzipan birthday cake, which we missed, but we sipped beers and tea with strawberry cake at a outdoor seaside table. The tall ships there were the Kruzenshtern, the Mir (which we boarded), Sedov, Dar Mlodziezy, Alexander von Humboldt and the Greif and also about 20 more restored ships that participated.

The shipwrecked Pamir is considered a sister ship to the Passat. The Pamir is memorialized in a church in Luebeck, St. Jakob's, where her lifesboat is displayed.

Hope you will enjoy this little look at something I love. I have a romance with sailboats, but really do not sail myself. I have when I was young, but my attraction perhaps really originates from some mysterious past life!!
no one does travel-posts as you do rated!
Jon: Thank you so much!!
Just loved the tall ships .. great photos
rated with hugs
What a great weekend!

:-) / R
Linda: I was in New York 1976 for the parade of them, and I was fascinated.

toritto: Yes, it was a very nice weekend and we enjoyed being by the sea.
Take it from a die-hard sailor, Sheila, this is tres cool. R
Thoth: I find my home decorated with sailboats and even painted a few myself, it is a true fascination, and we really enjoyed the adventure.
Got to love the old ships!! ~nodding~
R! Wow. those are some great pics. Looks like you really enjoyed. Hope you had some gutes essen und bier :)
Ahhh, reminds me of Denmark. The festive days and beautiful ships and the Baltic Sea. Thanks for bringing a little to the girl in the desert. Prosit!
Tink: Ah, it reminds me of our pirate days matee!!

Ron: It was a very fun time, I loved the food too, I should have spent more time in the Konditorei's. Actually ate some wild boar that a dad of one of the other students had caught and invited us to their home to try.

Oryoki: You are most welcome! I miss the desert sometimes. Haven't been in about 4 years now.
I suppose this is what Volkswagen named their famous small automobile after?
Rwoo5g: Not sure about that, but we did drive the autobahn, in a chevy engine Opel.
Thanks for sharing this, Sheila. I remember seeing the tallship sail into Amsterdam harbour in late 90s - they are a very impressive and heart-throbbing sight. What a nice vacation it sounds like you had and your son is a very handsome young man.

Fusun: Oh, thank you so much! We did have a nice time.
- wonderful article, Sheila. I share your sentiments about the tall ships. (I would have visited earlier, but Open Salon was giving me 'non-access' messages.)
Catherine: Thank you for visiting. I know that for me OS is still having issues.
I've not seen a tall ship for real. They look amazing, Sheila. A real connection to another era. What a thrill it would be to sail on one. Wouldn't that be wonderful!

And I did enjoy this post! Very much!
Kate: Thanks for the visit, I have long been attracted to sail boats, the idea of the wind conveying the boat, the dance on the water, it is real art.
