Pleasures? Guilty!

Rate: 31 Flag

I got thinking about guilty pleasures today.

I have 'em. So do you. I'm not necessarily proud of them (hence the guilty part), but like a mustard-snorting monkey, I just can't help myself. So, I give you, in no particular order, some of the things I am somewhat ashamed to admit I like:

1. Flo, the Progressive Insurance Chick Flo like a river

I can't explain it, but there is something very attractive by this cat-eyed, headband-wearing pitchwoman. I don't know if it's because she just might be crazy, or the sexy possibility that under all that white she might have black angel wings tattooed across her back, but there is something about Flo that makes me sit up and pay attention.

2. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves Crap - English Style

This is a horrible movie. Horrible on every level. There is not one frame that doesn't feel like it was crapped out of the giant Hollywood ass. Yet, when it comes on, I can't help watching, I love it. I love having a Robin Hood who sports a mullet and the worst British accent in film history. I love that we are asked to believe Kevin Costner & Christian Slater are long-lost brothers. I love that that horrible Bryan Adams song is all over this thing. Most of all, I love the fact that Alan Rickman knew he was in a piece of crap and said, "Fuck it" and went completely over the top.

3. Marilyn Manson The Face That Scared 1,000 Christians

I'm a 40-year-old guy. There is really no reason at all for me to be listening to Marilyn Manson. I didn't like metal when I was in high school or college. In fact, I still think most metal sucks. Yet, I can admit to a certain fondness for His Scariness. I love the over-the-top theatricality about what he does, I love that he took a page out of the Alice Cooper playbook and out-Kissed Kiss, and I love that he pisses off the Christian Right.  Plus, I really kind of dig his music. Trust me, there is something oddly satisfying about running on the treadmill at the gym while listening to "The Beautiful People" (As a side note, I also love the fact that he's been cast in a "metaphysical spaghetti western" with Nick Nolte). Besides, I stand by my initial thought that Mechanical Animals is the best Ziggy Stardust album Bowie never made.

Chilli With a Peanut Butter Sandwich

tastynutty

I blame the Iowa Public School System for this one. You see, when I was a kid, every other Wednesday was Chilli Day. Each bowl of chilli was accompanied by a peanut butter sandwich, and the love affair began. I know - it sounds disgusting. I can't argue. However, there is something about the combo I find oddly delicious. Perhaps it's the spicy & chunky combined with the salty & smooth. Every winter, I find myself enjoying this litte treat while the Future Mrs. Wonderhorse fights her gag reflex and looks at me as if I have just clubbed a baby seal.

Troll 2 A Classic

Troll 2 simply must be seen to be believed. A film so hysterically awful, even the guys from Mystery Science 3000 would not be able to improve it. It looks like it was made for about $36, and to call the performances amateurish is an insult to amateurs (I've seen high school productions that were more convincing). Not to mention the fact that are no trolls anywhere in it. If you are going to call your film Troll 2, you should probably go ahead and throw a troll in there. Nope, just a punch of cheap puppets, cardboard sets, and the town of Nilbog (read it backwords to figure out what the town is secretly inhabited by). Troll 1 is bad, don't get me wrong (featuring a pre-Seinfeld Julia Louis Dreyfus), but Troll 2 is really something special. It is so awful, there is a documentary about it currently playing the festival circuit calledf Best Worst Movie. It's comforting to know I'm not alone.

Please, don't judge me too hard.

This: "There is not one frame that doesn't feel like it was crapped out of the giant Hollywood ass." Perfect.
Shel -- On Flo I agree, she is the most successful pitchwoman on TV since Josephine the Plumber or Madge the Manicurist. I know you're only forty but search the archives.

Alan Rickman is always worth watching, in the same way Frank Langella is always worth watching. As an actor you might appreciate what I mean.

I pass on Manson and the peanut butter and chili. I do miss
MST 3k. One of the funniest shows ever to grace cable.
Freaky is going to be confused at the mention. She's still deto.. I mean, she's still recovering from her enhancement surgeries.
Lovely piece, Mr. Wonderhorse! (Psssst . . . Sheldon, please don't tell anyone, but I happen to share your taste regarding 4 out of 5 of the guilty pleasures. I would probably share it on Troll 2, I just haven't seen it yet. As for the chili and peanut butter sandwich thing, there are some Indian an African dishes that use peanuts, and give a similar flavor combination - so I suspect someone is onto the goodness.) Rated.
Sheldon - a big fat "Word" to Flo the Progressive Insurance lady. She's weirdly attractive to me too (probably for the same reason you listed, that underneath that white smock lurks the tattoo'd body of a hot indie gal).
Crud. Now I'll have to stop fast-forwarding through the Progressive commercials to find out what you and OE are talking about.

Yes, the Iowa Public School System lunch program. It taught me the simple pleasures to be found in choosing to bring a brown bag lunch with you. Simple pleasures like "normal digestion."
Cartouche - thanks! You're the bestest mom ever.

Julie - You'll have to be more specific - there is so much to ewww here.

OE - Geraldine was a little before my time, but I have fond memories watching The Price is Right and seeing Madge tell people they're soaking in it. You are spot on regarding Rickman, Langella & MST3K.

Tequila - I mean, I watched the whole damned thing, and not one pink hair to be seen. Color me disappointed.

Owl - thank God! I'm tired of being looked at like a leper every December.

Mad - I know, right? I guess the actress has a small role on "Mad Men", which I may have to start watching.
Stim - I forgot to mention that Chilli Day also consisted of a Cinnamon Roll. Notice, there were no veggies, and all of the food had a brownish-hue.
LOL I'm with you on the Chilli and PB Sandwich, YUM!

Otherwise, my guilty pleasures shall remain nameless, ;)

Pawed!
Beneath banal exists a world so awful it should be kept from human eyes lest their brains be immediately dissolved into food of mustard-snorting monkey-gods.
Alan Rickman was great in that movie, and it did suck. The one with Sean Connery and Audry Hepburn was great as aging lovers with him home from the crusades. I fucking loved that one. And I cannot look at Erroll Flynn without wondering about how much tail he nailed. He was my hero before Nicholson came along.
LOVE that Robin Hood movie. I'm like you, I will watch it any and every time it comes on. That movie, btw, sparked a passionate crush for Alan Rickman, which still burns to this day.
#1 - (said in his best Flo voice) Yessssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!

The rest - can't say I feel the same as I
A) never watched Prince Of Thieves (I saw Waterworld. Won't get fooled again).

2) never liked Marilyn Manson. OK, I do appreciate the whole Alice Cooper spin he takes, but I don't like his music.

C) like chili, like PB, but would NOT think to put them together. My taste buds threatened to strike.

4) never even CONSIDERED watching either Troll or Troll 2. Did see the original The Hills Have Eyes though. Recommended over the remake.

My own guilty pleasures? Reading other peoples.
On Flo. In the commercial pictured above, I swear the same actor is both people doing a split screen. Every time I see it I get more and more convinced that the lady on the left is Flo when she isn't working. That aid, I'm not sure which one I prefer...she does remind me of some ex-gfs...

I will judge you for Troll 2 though.. Bad BAD horse! No oats for you!
Stephanie Courtney! That's who plays "Flo" in those ads. Everyone seems to love her to death. Is it the hair? The mascara? The big, tricked-out name badge? She's irresistable.

As for the rest of your list... dude, you have issues.
You nailed it on Flo, the Progressive Insurance lady!!! Unexplainedly hot, she is! I can't turn away from her ads on TV. And Alan Rickman is the best part of Robin Hood; he's the meanest, most horrible bad guy today. How about his role in Quigley Down Under???? Bad to the bone and totally over the top. Rated
I agree with you about Flo and loved your tattoo speculation. I think Costner's Robin Hood movie is greatly aided and abetted by the title and the movie poster - both feature better acting than he was able to produce - but yes,Rickman was a CLASSIC. I even liked it when he was getting ready to force himself on Maid Marion, that's how over the top nutjob he was. I love him. Did you see Truly Madly Deeply? He made a movie that otherwise might have been ridiculously sentimental into something really special.
On the chili and PB I would be with Mrs Future Wonderhorse. Ick.

But as for the rest- I gotta 'fess up. And I have a special place in my heart for bad horror. I really miss Joe Bob Briggs Drive-In show.
Miko - they are damned tasty, no???

Tom - I believe that was the original inscription on the Statue of Liberty.

G - "Robin & Marian" is one of those flicks that I always want to see, but never got around to it. Thanks to you, it is now in the #1 position on my Netflix queue.

Alpha - it's just so damned bad, but god help me, I do love it so.

Bill - I certainly get it. As I said, I'm not proud of this.

Traig - seriously, have you seen "Troll 2"??? Watch it, then come back and tell me it's not brilliant in it's awfulness.

Gordon - irresistable is right!

Ralph - loved "Quigley Down Under"!

Sandra - I have seen "T.M.D.", and was pleasantly surprised by it. Rickman just makes everything better. Have you seen "Love Actually"? His scene with Rowan Atkinson at the department store is hysterical.

Julie - yeah, tv is a lot less fun since MST3K & Joe Bob moved on to other pastures.

By the way, what the hell is this advertisement at the bottom of my blog? No offense to the French, but I don't want to fly to France!
I'm with you on the chili and peanut butter and I do dig Flo, but I didn't know that was her name. To me, the only true TV Flo was on Alice.
Oh, and I listen to Marilyn Manson too - guiltily, but I do it (though I had nothing but an 'ew' reaction to his video with then-girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood, and now I have to say it again: ew).
Sheldon, you know the MST3K guys are still doing their thing, right?

http://www.rifftrax.com/
Oh yes, I have seen Troll 2. There is a point with bad movies, that the fun turns back to pain.

It is a bad movie, so bad, that watching it without 2-3 other people to rip on it with is torture.

I know my bad movies. I'll watch ANYTHING once. I watch every new movie Sci-fi puts out. I watch cable in the middle of the night.

Troll 2 actually melts through the bottom of the barrel with badness. I don't think it was really troll 2. I think it was another film they had lying around that they used the incredible Troll brand name to sell to us... What a meeting that must have been.

People, DO NOT watch that movie. Sheldon is trying to Rick Roll you in the most eye bleeding fashion possible. He is an evil evil horse with hate in his heart!
The other half of the MST3k people are at http://www.cinematictitanic.com/

Lots of good stuff at both places. I generally prefer Rifftrax though.
The Geico gecko and the Progressive girl need to go far away and never come back. Two of the most nauseating commercials EVER made.

Rickman was great in Die Hard. The original Robin Hood was much better.

Manson sucks.

I'll have to give the chili and peanut butter a try.

Not even going to try Troll2.

I like Flo too!!!! She's cool.
I'm with you on most of these, particularly re: Mr. Rickman, who I've had a secret crush on for Years.
i agree that there is something zany about flo that appeals.

i will watch anything alan rickman is in. i have an ugly-old-british-guy fetish attraction to him and one of MY guilty pleasures is the video for the Texas song "In Demand" which features him dancing the tango. sigh.

i think i can see chili and pb. one of my childhood pairings was spaghetti-os with pb, one i occasionally still indulge in. no weirder, really, than spicy peanut sauces in thai food.
I always watched Flo's commercials just to see her ass. The old pervert in me. Don't tell the red-head. Passing fantasies happen. Flo used to be with Second City Comedy Tour.
I am SO with you on Flo. I want her to be my best friend! But then I think I probably would club her to death! I think she could do the horizontal mambo for hours, and then eat your chili and pb sammie!

Speaking of, I will actually try that this winter! Winter, a faded memory..... MM, music good, the guy a bizarre pr experiment.

Robin Hood. KC can't do a british accent in a movie about a guy stealing from rich to give to poor. Can't KC steal an accent, and some talent? But the music sooo fit. Love Bryan Adams.

Troll. Won't be seeing it this reincarnation. . I'll just have to trust you, Shel. :)
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeefrapp.
Hey thanks for the lunch idea !!!
Flo fascinates me too--but I think she's an actress who's probably really good and comedic--plus I think she's either wearing a wig or they are intentionally making her hair horrible. Either way, she doesn't strike me as being that old and the fact that she can carry off wearing a horrific white costume with ugly hair and still look interesting and funny is something to admire!
Whoa, you really put yourself out there with this one! We all have our bizarro side, don't we, that we just can't explain. I am there with you on Marilyn--love him, for all the reasons you said (I never liked metal either). Met him and he's very lovely in person. The fact that he shocks really cracks me me. Didn't we learn from Mr. Cooper it's just a stage show? And his music is really great--I, too, am quite the fan of Beautiful People. I've seen him twice live and the man performs!

Love chili, love pb...now I have to try them together. I love PB with spicy foods, ala vietnamese spring roll sauce, so I'm thinking it could be a hit. I'm intrigued.

I can't say anything about the movie. I watch cheesy slasher films all of the time...... some women watch Lifetime, I watch Fearnet. What can I say?

I think I have to make my own list now.
While Alan Rickman's Sheriff was truly inspired (enough to cause Costner to pich a fit), let's not forget Slaters "Fuck me, he cleared it! ", which just cracked me up.

Flo is a treasure, we all know someone like her - or should.

My own prime guilty pleasure is the Pet Shop Boys.
31/31 posts to EP ratio! Kudos.
Smith - there's a new Flo in town, and she's got "a tricked out nametag".

Sandra - yeah, it's very creepy video. Still they creepiest is the one for "Beautiful People". Although the image of him riding a pig in "Sweet Dreams" has haunted me for years.

Mad - I know! I have yet to check it out.

Traig - if you think I'm going to sit here and let you drag the already soiled "Troll 2" through the mud, you've got another think coming, sir! Next you'll tell me that you think "Manos: The Hands of Fate" is garbage too!

Black - gotta say, I like the gecko too. Something about a Cockney-accented lizard makes me chuckle.

Lisa - thanks for backing me up! I'm pleasantly surprised by all the pro-Flo's!

Connie - he hasn't had much to do in the previous "Harry Potter" films - I'm really looking forward to him unleashing the evil in the next couple.

Life - I'll have to look for that video.

Older - yeah, I believe she still performs with the Groundlings in LA.

Ann - I'm telling you, "Troll 2" is unbelievable.

AKA - You're welcome. You won't be sorry.

Poet - I've seen her headshot, and she is very attractive.

Renee - I have to admit, I kind of want to see him live
I love Flo. It's her deadpan sense of humor - like she knows you're really stupid and that you don't get it, but she enjoys it too.
John - very funny. Personally, I loved Rickman threatening to cut Costner's heart out with a spoon.

Kind - thanks, but let's be honest: this thing should not be on the front page. I don't get it, probably never will, and have stopped trying to figure it out.
Grif - the spirit that is Flo trancends all!
I love Flo and I don't feel the least bit guilty about it. She's darling. Although she looks more like a Shelly than a Flo to me.
As for the rest, you are on your own, doll!
Flo is def. compelling! I want to go have beer with her.

As for your other guilty pleasures ... well, I can't judge. (I mean, one of my food treats was mustard over refried beans ... )
I share your fascination with Flo, there horsey. Here's why

http://media.photobucket.com/image/stephanie%20courtney/MiniPigg/image_7680153.jpg

Ain't never seen no Flo like that on my insurance aisle
No no, Manos doesn't cross the line.

Besides, I don't want my mud to get soiled.
Eerie- 5 out of 5. Thoughts-

1) I'm straight for Flo.
2) How did Morgan Freeman escape unscathed from the Muslim drag? Is it only by comparison to Costner's "acting"?
3) Smells Like Children- Lunchbox. Got me through H.S.- felt a little weird after Columbine, but still...
4) Only works with traditional red chili- learned that one the hard way. (White Chili requires matching condiments, apparently)
5) According to wikipedia, there's a recently released Troll 3, featuring killer trees animated by nuclear waste. Fun.
Dharma - c'mon, I know you love a bowl of chilli with a pb sammie while you get all Lotus-y!

Anni - that sounds awful. I must try it!

Boomer - yeah, she's a fine looking lass!

Traig - you know I love ya, ya big galloot!
I know what you mean about Flo. Inexplicable.

Another guilty pleasure: Stephanie Miller on the radio. She and her pals are sophomoric to say the least but I find myself giggling along merrily like I'm in high school again.
Wyck - "Lunchbox": awesome tune (but yeah, the whole Columbine thing...). I head they had a screening of "Troll 2" and took an audience poll as to what the sequel should be called. The winner: "Troll 2: Part II".
Lainey - I don't know Stephanie Miller. May have to check her out.
I *love* Flo! She's my favorite girl geek. She's played by comedienne Stephanie Courtney: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0183960/

I think what makes her so appealing so that she's memorably quirky while somehow managing to keep it real. Neat trick!

My other fave is the Geico gekko. I love that little lizard! ;)
Currenlty I love the Light and Fit yogurt commercial where the woman slups one down in the store and then has that "oh so naughty" look on her face as she wipes off her upper lip. Yeah, it's not suggestive at all.

http://www.lightnfit.com/tools_tips_experts/0_plus_on_tv.html

I think I'm in love.

And if you really want a good dish of canned chili, toss in a few bacos bits. Mmmmm.
Flo the insurance girl is amazingly hot!
Rated just for mentioning Mystery Science 3000.
My name is Mary Beth and I like Hall & Oates.
OK, FWIW, I love Flo but I didn't know anything about her until I read above comments. So, thanks, guys! I'm way too old to have ever liked Metal so I don't even know this MM "person." And I sometimes eat a bologna-and-peanut-butter sandwich--it's wonderful! My family always looks at me like I'm eating, oh, I don't know, salamander and seahorse salad or something! No taste at all, my fam! This is great, Shel--and we all know that "confession is good for the soul." So consider your soul cleansed and refreshed! Rated. D
Writer - I like the gekko as well

Ocular - I do have a soft spot for Hormel canned chilli. I may have to try that Baco thing.

Van - I know. I find myself wanting to do naughty things with her.

Steve - Ah, Tom Servo, we hardly knew ye.

Mary - I'm with you. "Maneater" is a perfect 80's pop song.

Yarn - don't know salamander & seahorse until you've tried it!
I think you need a bigger barn.
Alan Rickman was the best part of "Robin Hood" by a lot.

Peanut butter/chili as a combo? Sounds like normal digestion would not follow ingestion of that one. Pass.

The Geico gecko amuses me at times, but only when I'm in the right mood. I wouldn't miss the Progressive chick if she dropped off the face of the earth.

Timothy Hutton in just about anything is my favorite guilty pleasure.
MST3K - truly funny. Miss that one.

I'll have to take your word on how craptastic "Troll 2" must be, as I've never seen it.
