Nearly 30 years in the middle school biz...hope to graduate one of these days! Have taught English, choral music, drama, computer applications and just about anything else you can imagine. Oh, and how can I forget publications...I'm responsible for the yearbook and the school newspaper. Also did a stint as the librarian. Wide ranging interests and a long-time Salon addict. Two kids, two grandsons and a dog round out the picture! Originally from Marin (go figure) but 32 years at Tahoe has definitely spoiled me. To quote Nora Ephron, "I feel bad about my neck."

Chasing the Straight Talk Express

Earlier this week, John and Cindy McCain dropped into my little town for a visit.  Of course, they weren't there to visit anyone the likes of me.  It was a visit to the more than 100 supporters who felt compelled to pony up $33,100 for the privilege of attending the event. Their goal was to raise $500,000 in an hour and the word is they succeeded. The police were there as was the sheriff, the bomb squad, assorted emergency vehicles and, of course, the Secret Service.  The private fundraiser was held at one of the many gorgeous houses on Lakeshore Boulevard, aka Millionaire’s (and Billionaire’s) Row.  Those of my political ilk, not surprisingly, were not invited.

In order to demonstrate the stark contrast between political philosophies, a local Republican turned Obama supporter (who COULD have afforded to attend the McCain affair) decided to throw a picnic.  A free, catered, everybody's-welcome kind of picnic with a barbecue, drinks, and plenty of good company.

And, lots of good campaign literature.

McCain had been speaking earlier down in the valley and was due to travel to Tahoe around noon via a long and winding road, the Mt. Rose Highway. We had spies posted outside the high school in Reno where he was speaking with the intention that they would be able to tell us when he left so we could time our appearance on the sides of the highway and also at the private fundraiser location.

We never got a call from anyone, but as soon as we saw motorcycle police zooming by our picnic location, we figured he must be near. Sign holders were dispatched to the Lakeshore Mansion and a friend and I scurried to position ourselves alongside the highway. After climbing over some rocks and tramping through the vegetation, we found the perfect spot – signs at the ready – right across from two motorcycle cops who were obviously waiting for the Straight Talk Express.  Suddenly, the cops zipped off down the road.  Thinking McCain was coming from another direction (there are only 3 ways to get into my town), we hopped back into the car and headed up the hill only to be passed by McCain’s entourage heading down the opposite direction. Alas, there was no Straight Talk bus.   Just a fairly nondescript group of cars – not even a limo. The road, on our part, was paved with good intentions, but we managed to miss the whole motorcade!

The highlight of the day for us was the fly-by.  One of the group had had the bright idea to send not only kayakers to float around with signs on the water side of the house, but to hire a boat to tow a parasailer with an Obama banner.

You could say it was just another day in paradise.  But it occured to me: how many could we feed, how many textbooks could we buy, how many homeless could we shelter or how much medical care could we provide with $500,000.  Or even $33,100.

I'm sure the McCain crowd was content in their secure, luxury compound at their little closed event.  But I bet we had more fun.

I'm not sure they know how to have fun.

Marsha, this is a wonderful post, beautifully rendered and inspiring. What a contrast between the aerial view of a multi million dollar lakeside home with a private dock with that of a view of the welcoming picnic and its bent table. I know where I'd rather be. Well done and thanks.
That was a great story! Imagine paying (or wasting) $33,100 to rub shoulders with McCain. As the old saying goes, "A fool and his money are soon departed."
I could only dream of having $33,100. To pay that much to hang out with someone who uses a Kleenex (I'm assuming) and goes to the bathroom like the rest of us is just plain insanity.

Great story, Marsha, the pictures are great! This is a good illustration that government should be "of the people, by the people and for the people," which means all people, not just the select few that have a larger bank account than most.
wskrz, I've always had the notion that Republican candidates blow their noses with crisp $100 bills, and Democratic candidates spend theirs on... well, I'm not really sure, but it doesn't seem to be helping them win. Maybe they should hire better hackers for Ohio's voting machines?
Great post, extraordinary photos, brava! Sadly, Stellaa has a point, this whole scenario could be turned around to show a ritzy Dem fundraiser in Malibu while McCain chats em up in the supermarket aisles.. wait, that already happened. I still like yours better.
The aerial view was taken by the parasail person - you'd never get me up that high!!

As for big-ticket fundraisers, it is a depressing reality of campaining today that both sides must indulge in them. It seems to me, however, based on the reading I've done, that it's far more common amongst the elephants than the donkeys.
This post says it all---I love this!
I love guerilla campaigning, especially when it involves parasailing.
"McCain had been speaking earlier down in the valley and was due to travel to Tahoe around noon via a long and winding road, the Mt. Rose Highway"

Yep, you are in Tahoe after living in Marin...I haven't heard this phrase in 30 years, but I can very much imagine it!

Love the photos and the story. I especially love the one with the boat and the mountains behind. I was never so healthy than when I lived in Tahoe. Don't miss being buried in 14 feet of snow, digging down ten feet to the top of my car (by myself) , or marking its general vicinity with an orange flag to avoid its massacre by a rotary plow. Still the summer....ahhh, the summer in Tahoe is the best place I can think of just now...
Yes, Lisa, it's the place to be in the summer. Just a glance at the local supermarket parking lot will confirm that. Actually, my very favorite time is fall when we get the place back for a month or so before the skiiers arrive. I've been here 32 years and the winters are starting to get to me. I'm not looking forward to the upcoming one now that my son will be at college instead of here helping his old ma.

You've given me an idea. Perhaps I'll post some of my photos of the 14' of snow from last winter as an antidote to summer heat! We had the storm of the century, as you may know, which for me, resulted in the interior damage of the century to my home.

Come on up and see me! I'll save you a place in the parking lot.
“The United Nations Children's Fund reports that 1 million to 3 million lives could be saved annually if young children in developing nations took a Vitamin A pill two or three times a year. The annual cost per child: 4 to 6 cents. . . .” [ Source: Seattle Times, June 6, 1995 http://tinyurl.com/5scrwe ] Of course that was a decade ago. Now it's probably a prohibitive 10 cents /year/child by now. Maybe even 12 cents since Vitamin A is fat soluble and thus contains Carbon, and is probably should fall under part of the ‘carbon tax’.

$33,100 = 331,000 children, mostly black or poor hopefully both – and really, REALLY backwards and super-primitive (some can’t even read (!!) Without them everyone who works on brail books and brailing software would be out of work and THEIR children would be starving too – so who are we kidding?

Who REALLY needs the poor probably black or Indian kids anyway?

Besides it makes us ‘Buy American’ and isn’t that really the bottom line? It’s one of the easy ways around NAFTA – and if you can’t see, or are dead, then you sure aren’t going to be crossing OUR borders! (hint: dead=no need for fence!) What we really need is Monsanto to develop crops without Vitamin A in them.

And when we’ve killed the last polar bear for the Vitamin A in it’s liver – we won’t be haunted by the thoughts of them floating around on some shrinking piece of ice with their cub and drowning far out at sea! These are just a FEW of the benefits of the lack of Vitamin A. I’m sure a think tank would be able to think up a lot more reasons! After all, when was the last time a Polar Bear ever did YOU a favor except look cute? Kinda like Panda. When was the last time a panda ever helped you? Next time you need help – call a panda!

I say up the cost of the McCain Lunch from $33,100 (isn't that about 15 seconds of the Iraq war?) to $500,000 -- that way we can get rid of more pesky kids a whole lot sooner! After all, we really DO want the "Straight Talk" from our "Straight" candidate!

And without Foreign Aide for kids, just think how much smaller our Government could get, and how much longer our Military can lay siege to Iraq!

It's a thought without end, a-men.
Thank you for the story, the dichotomy between their approaches and views on everyday Americans is clear.
I would like to join you folks sometime before the election and find a way to help the campaign effort in Reno. I am from Sacramento, but wouldn't mind zipping over the pass to lend a hand, make some phone calls or knock on some doors. My Grandparents lived near Carson City for years and I've spent quite a bit of time in Reno. California is a safe state for Obama in the polls, and while I will be involved herein my own town - Nevada is too close to ignore.
