Flu, breakfast cereals, and local news

Rate: 3 Flag

In a story about sugar in kids' cereals, my local television news program showed something that would horrify many parents, particularly this time of year.

Was it the amount of sugar found in a single serving of Lucky Charms? Was it about a new holiday, Smurf-themed cereal that all kids demand to have?

No, it had nothing to do with sugar or Smurfs.  To get the local, human interest angle, they went to a popular local indoor playground with sugar-laden and non-sugar laden cereals and foised them on the kids.  In their single-second shot I saw several four and five year olds with their grimy fingers in a cereal box all at once.  Others were clambering around them.

Some irresponsible news reporter in covering a story about kids' health invited a gaggle of kids to share a box of Lucky Charms in the middle of flu season!

What the hell?

There are a lot of easy transmission locations that are just invisible to people. It takes pointing them out. I thought it interesting when someone pointed to the ATM and the gas pump as places everyone pushes with their fingers... A good time to wash one's hands after.

Now if someone would just solve the problem of getting out of the bathroom without touching anything after washing one's hands. I love it at many airports where there's no door and just a baffle.
I wonder who had this bright idea. I can imagine the pitch session. Was there a lone voice of common sense that was overruled?
Producer: "Nah, we don't have the money to shell out for some paper cuts. Kids are already germ-filled. What's the harm?"
