Putting Photos Into Your Blog On O.S.

Rate: 12 Flag

These instructions are intended for the raw beginner and cover every step of the procedure. More experienced bloggers may find them tedious.

HOW TO INSERT A PHOTO INTO YOUR BLOG

ON OPEN SALON

PRELIMINARY NOTE:

I find it very helpful to move the photo I want to use to my desktop before starting. It is much easier to find there than in an album of hundreds. Then give it a distinctive title so it’s easy to find.

Once that is done you’re ready to go.

1- Open up your Open Salon page…

2- Click on New Post (the usual New Post page opens) Write the text that you want to be above your photo then leave the cursor below the text. (Instructions below will cover inserting text after you put the photo in, so you can leave it until later if you prefer.)

3- Click on the wee tiny tree symbol that is between the little anchor and the little brush just above the area for writing a blog. (a small window opens that is titled Upload Media)

4- Click on the Choose File button (a small new window drops down)

5- In the top centre bar scroll to and click on Desktop (a list of everything that is on your desktop appears) To the left of that centre bar should be a short bar with three options in it.

6- Click on the centre option (it looks like 5 little lines one above the other)

7- Look for the title of the photo you want to insert in the list on the right half of that window and ……

8- Click on it (it will highlight and the “Choose” button in the lower right corner will light up)

9- Click on the Choose button (the window will return to Upload Media)

10- Click on the Upload button (it has white letters on a dark blue or black background) Wait for the photo to upload.

11- When the photo has uploaded, the New Post page will re-appear automatically. It will have your photo in the usual blogging space right where you left the cursor.

OTHER STUFF

You may want to put text above your photo at this time. If so, do this:

1-   Put your pointer to the right of the photo and ….

2-  Left Click. (a blinking cursor line will appear at the right edge of the photo)

3-  Tap the left pointing arrow on your keyboard (that will  move that blinking line to the left side of the photo)

4-  Tap your Enter key once for each line you want that  photo to move down (twice is usually enough)

5-   Tap the up arrow until the cursor is above the photo. You  are now ready to enter as much text as you want above  the photo.

You may also want to put text or another photo below the first photo. If so do this:

1-  Tap your down arrow until the blinking line is on the left side of the first photo.

2-  Tap your right arrow to move the blinking line to the right side of the photo. (These two steps are only necessary if you entered text above the photo AFTER you inserted the photo. If you did not enter text above the photo, or if you entered text before inserting the photo, then after putting the blinking cursor line to the right of your photo, go to step 3 below)

3-  Tap your Enter key to make the blinking cursor line  move down to the next line under the photo. You can tap  it a few times if you want to leave more than one line of space under the first  photo.

4-  Type in the text you want under the photo or repeat the above procedure for entering another photo.

NOTE: On a mac keyboard use the “return” key where I said to use the Enter key in the instructions above.

MORE OTHER STUFF

You may find that when you insert a photo, it does not fill the blog space and you’d like it to be bigger so as to fill the 485 pixels of width that space has on Open Salon. To make it get larger do this:

1-  Click on the tiny  HTML letters up where that little tree is. (a window will open that has HTML code in it)

2-  Look for the word ‘width’ with a number to the right of it. The number is usually “285” but not necessarily.

3-  Change that number to “480” (Take care to change ONLY that number)

NOTE: The word ‘width’ will appear in the HTML code once for each photo you’ve inserted. Change the number beside it for each one.

4- Click UPDATE in the lower left corner of the HTML window. (You will return to the New Post page. If your photo is not now visible, don’t worry about it. It WILL appear on your page when you click on PUBLISH at the bottom right corner of your New Post page.

NOTE:

If you really, really want to see that photo BEFORE you send your blog to your page, you can see it this way: Do NOT enter your heading. Go to the bottom of the New Post page and click on Publish. A small window will appear that reminds you that you don’t have a heading AND your photo will magically appear where you put it. Then enter your heading and click on Publish again.

Hope this is some help. Any questions, feel free to PM me.

……Sky

Thanks for the tips to those of us who are 'challenged'!
Michelle,
We all go through the same learning curve!

.
I have bee putting photos on my blogs for a long time, yet there was so much here that I didn't know.

Thank you Sky.

Rated with much appreciation.♥
VERY helpful. Not only do you LOOK smart in your glasses, but you ARE smart!
You can also change the size of the photo or other graphic inserted out of file by moving the cursor to the lower corner of the inserted image and dragging it to a suitable size after initial insertion. Sometimes the drag doesn't work so you can click on and highlight the image, delete it and try again. That usually works.
Thankyou, Thankyou for informing the absolute beginners . How do I place a profile picture up?
What Jan said - easier than messing with the HTML. However, I find it doesn't work in Chrome, my usual browser, and to do this I have to use Firefox.
Jan & Myriad,
I find that there is a problem with doing this. The width of the New Post page is NOT the width of my OS page where a blog is posted, which is 485 pixels wide. If I 'stretch' a photo it may - or may not - fit that space properly. I also find that stretching a photo can effect the quality of the photo more than using the HTML, although any enlargement will effect quality.
To each his own.

Gabrielle,
Open your OS page.
Put your pointer on MORE in the upper right corner and when that wee drop down appears click on EDIT ACCOUNT. When that page opens, click on PROFILE at the top of the page.

A window will open that has a SELECT FILE button, click that then upload your photo as you do in the instructions in this blog for selecting a photo. It is so much easier if you move the photo in question to your desktop before doing an insertion, but is not necessary if you can navigate to it easily without doing that.

Ta da!!
I'm going to copy and paste this and the next time I try to post (notice the word "try"), I will use your very useful points. At one time I worked with 12 year olds so my vocabulary can get quite colourful.... and from what I have read of the comments, you are going to be one busy pussycat!
Chrissie,
Do NOT take me as any kind of an expert at this. I learned most of what I know about this through trial-n-error. Large amounts of the latter.

For really good instructions - albeit in a different format - go to Catherine Forsythe's page and scroll down until (it'll seem like forever) you find her 10 sets of instructions for doing things on OS. Her way of instructing will be better for some people and mine will be better for those who like instructions in "point" form.
.
Never had any of those problems with stretching...
Myriad,
In that case, I bow to your superior knowledge and await your blog with instructions on how to do things on OS, with much anticipation; as I'm sure we all do!

.
If you stretch a graphic by grabbing the middle of one of the edges you distort it. By grabbing a corner the two adjoining edges enlarge proportionately much as with working with Photoshop. and there is no distortion.
Jan,
Distortion is not what I was referring to but it is an excellent point and I appreciate you making it for those who prefer to use stretching rather than HTML .
.
Very kind of you to take the time to do this. For some post subjects, photos are the heart of the sharing. Thanks for sharing your great tips.
To enlarge or reduce a photo, all you have to do is click on it and drag one of the squares that appear at all four corners and in the middle. Much easier than entering HTML. If you want it centred, which I usually do, go to the tool bar and click on the same tool you'd use to centre text.
That's how it's done?
Sky, I see where everyone (especially me) is getting lax at giving credit to where we get these photos. I get most of my stuff on Google Images, and being a Goggle+ member, I've quit putting Google Images underneath them. As you know, this got very heated one time on OS. What you think? I didn't know about re-sizing, and I will use it, post-haste!
Boanerges1,
That works fine in programs such as Word, but Jan has it right for stretching out a photo when it is in the New Post part of OS as you prepare to Publish it. I have never seen those little handles appear when I click on a photo in New Post.

You raise an interesting point however. There are times when one does not wish to enlarge a photo, perhaps it comes out too grainy or has other problems, but one DOES wish to centre it on one's blog page. To do this, you highlight that photo by dragging your pointer over it, exactly as you would highlight words. The go up to the top of the New Post page, just above your post, and click on the "centring" symbol - it is identical to the one used in Word and other programs.

You can also do this for centring text such as a title or some poems that look better centred.

Thanks Bo!

Scanner,
I think that wherever someone might think that such photos are your own, you should make it clear that this is not the case. I strongly favour indicating who the photographer is when that is known but if the photos are commonplace and from Google or some other supplier of photos - either free or for payment - then I don't think it is required. Photos borrowed from a publication should be accredited to that publication, including the issue, date, and photographer if possible.
.
I can tie my shoes too!
@Pong,

What?!! Already?!!
and you just barely out of puberty by only a dozen years or so!

Amazing!!!!
.
It doesn't work for you? Weird. I just went back into one of my posts to edit something (a dumbass typo I belatedly discovered) and tried it out on a pic to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. Left clicked on it, the boxes appeared and I could do whatever I wanted. Worked a charm.
Bo,
I can DO the same things with a photo that you can, but I have to just put the pointer on a corner of the photo - no "boxes" that I can see. Or maybe Ed I Tor just hates ALL us cats; not just Tink!
.
I happen to know this already. I rated to promote this for those who need the info.
Thank you for posting this, skypixieo. I only knew the basic photo information, but you have opened up a whole new world for me! Rated.
