- Bio
- Smeaux is a perpetually confused child of the sixties who learned late in life that love, while wonderful, doesn't always find a way; and having enough money really does make things better. She's haunted by her youth, much of which was squandered joyously in art school, the rest in various dives and haunts in sketchy neighborhoods while carousing with pot-addled friends. Some of those friends are still in her life, and a few new ones have been added to the mix, but the pot, for the most part, is gone. She is grateful for Weeds DVDs.

On the Battle of the Bulge, and the illusion of neutrality
One constant in life never fails me: whenever I make a commitment to lose weight, the temptation-generating machinery rachets up its efforts. Like, immediately. Anyone who’s tried to lose weight knows what I’m talking about.
Suddenly, your best
Wanna know who your friends are? Get laid off.
After eleven years of service at a magazine as a writer and
graphic designer, my position was eliminated.
In thirty-plus years of working, I've never been laid off before,
so this has been a learning experience on many levels: from
severance packages to the reality of daily life without a job,… Read full post »
I am the news.
I am the news.
My house is under foreclosure. My husband is unemployed. We just "resolved" a bankruptcy. And I am 55 years old.
But there's more. I just learned my job is going to be phased out sometime in 2010. All my friends, after reciting variations of "How terrible" or… Read full post »
Life is a numbers game...
…and the fun begins with your age.
How old are you? “Eight and a half!” Remember? That half year or nine months or whatever meant everything. You were that much closer to being a grown up.
Next: Height. Door jambs bore the brunt of this particular data quest. The day

It was the mother of all rude awakenings.
4:30 in the morning, yanked viciously out of a sound sleep. What is that dreadful noise?
The cat! What is she screaming at?? I vigorously roused my beloved, Mr. Sound Sleeper. He crept into the family room to find Goldie with bottle brush… Read full post »
Don't give them permission.
I have a job interview for a copywriter position scheduled this week.
It's the first interview I've been able to score in almost a year of trying.
I was talking with my husband about this. We have a lot of hopes for this opportunity, hopes for me to get someplace that's… Read full post »
The wondering and wonder of the one (that got away).
I met Geoff more than 25 years ago, during a gorgeous spring in south Georgia that was rich with blooming dogwoods and azaleas.
He was getting ready to take over his family's farm in Wisconsin. He had saved a lot of money and was going to make his move soon.… Read full post »
The gift that keeps on giving...to somebody else.
My husband and I have a time share in Sarasota. It’s a relic of my first marriage, to "the bum."
It’s paid for, but there are maintenance fees due every January of about $400. We go there sometimes, but our assigned week does not always line up favorably with our schedule.… Read full post »
My life in 100 words. Harder than it sounds!
Born, Syracuse, Eisenhower years, five siblings. Older brother polio survivor. Grandmother, Mom, Dad, functioning alcoholics. Grandma always there stirring things up, often cruel. Mom is tenderhearted, loves animals, very talented in the arts. Dad is brilliant, dark, funny, mellows as he ages. I'm a… Read full post »
Feline OCD.

Our kitty has issues.
We love our little golden-eyed tabby to death...when she's not attacking the furniture or returning her last snack to sender. But she has an exceedingly odd habit.
She likes to eat cardboard.
But not eat, like you eat a burger (chew, savor, swallow, repeat).… Read full post »
My recession story.
It's not the worst one out there. But it's the worst it's been for me so far.
The facts are these. My husband of 15 years works part time selling autographs and antiquities on eBay. I have a full time job as a copywriter/graphic artist in an emotionally toxic, badly… Read full post »
25 things? You asked.
1. Back in the day, I had moments of hotness.
2. I have never ever liked mushrooms.
3. I am Chuck Norris in the kitchen when it comes to making cheesecake.
4. I went for seven years on a gluten free diet. This gave birth to #3.
5. I rode in… Read full post »
