In which I finally post...and visit the City By The Bay

Rate: 22 Flag

It's been more than two months since I last posted. Yes, yes...I've been busy that's true. But who hasn't?

I did, by the way, enjoy a couple beers and some nachos with Mr. Rob St. Amant on a warm evening in early August as mentioned in my last, brief post. I am quite delinquent in reporting on the mini OS meet-up (Nikki Stern, unfortunately, was unable to make it). As you can see from his posts and as I confirmed in person, Rob is a compelling guy whose knowledge and interests have a very wide range. We had a fun couple of hours chatting at the pub there on Market Street in Philly. Thanks again, Rob, for the great conversation and for feeding my parking meter. I don't know why that new-fangled thing kept rejecting my credit card.

In other news, I was thinking the other night about the last few months and what has occured during that time and decided I should break the post silence and remind myself and anyone else who might care that I do indeed enjoy this community of Open Salon. So, I asked myself, why not share a little and jot down what I've been up to?

As such, a précis of my recent activity now follows...

My daughter, after a busy summer of visiting relatives, day camps, sailing lessons, tennis lessons, the ubiquitous karate lessons, swimming in grandpa's pool, bike rides, summer reading, sleep-overs and even some time to be bored,  started the 5th grade during the first week of September. And she celebrated her 11th birthday a few weeks back as the fair Angela lovingly mentioned in her last post. My kid has now settled into the school routine and, like most kids her age this time of year, is looking forward to Halloween and, though it has so far been mostly through oblique references, has her eye on Christmas.

In other child-related activity, aside from my participation in most of the above, I began building my daughter a doll house. A sweeping project that has taken much longer to complete than originally anticipated. It seems like it's been months...oh right; it has been, since she and I sat down at the kitchen table to design it. She was quite specific with some of her requirements, kid-like vague with many others, but we at last settled on a floor plan, I sketched up a front elevation and construction began. The thing is now up and under roof and so just this past weekend we finally headed out to the craft store to purchase paint, flooring and wall paper.  Fortunately the bill's tally, while nothing to sneeze at, was significantly less than what one might spend at Home Depot buying the appropriate equivalent items for a full scale house and it, in fact, all fit comfortably within our shopping cart with plenty of room to spare. We still have exterior finishes to worry about, but we'll get to that eventually. I hold the note on it but she assures me her lemonade stand earnings will be enough to cover the mortgage and utilities.

In 30 years it'll be hers free and clear!

In addition, I spent much of August and September paying for the severe lack of attention paid to my yard earlier during the summer. Speaking of notes I'm certain my long-suffering neighbors, secretly convinced my home had been abandoned and was in the hands of the Illuminati through their control of the banks, were wondering if I'd ever get around to saving what's left of their property values. To their delight or chagrin, depending on who you ask, I made my presence known and at last committed myself (figuratively speaking) to spend many weekends both pulling and wacking weeds, mowing what may or may not be grass, pruning shrubs and generally working diligently towards bringing my little tax parcel to within shouting distance of the community's restrictive covenants regarding property maintenance. Though the implements of destruction (apologies to Arlo Guthrie) I used to wrest control of the out-of-control flora conspired against me with flat tires, broken belts, disintigrating fuel lines and burned out motors, I am now able to comfortably walk the grounds of the Smithery Compound without the need for a vat of Calamine Lotion or GPS.

Oh, and I read Jonathan Franzen's novel, Freedom, too. It was pretty good.

"Who cares about all that stuff... what about Angela!?" you may be asking at this point. Perhaps you go on to say, "You two have used so much server space writing about how much you love each other, where's that update?"

Ah, thank you for asking; the truth is I've saved the best for last.

The only thing that has changed with Angela and me is that we are more devoted to each to other than ever. As you may have guessed from her absence from OS she has been extremely busy but she is well and we talk on the phone every day in addition to frequent emails and texts.

We had an absolutely fabulous time in the City By The Bay in the late-middle of August. There is a whole  post to be written describing the shenanigins that took place on that trip having to do with my best friend's wife. Quit your winking and nudging;  twern't that type o' shenanigins. It was a bit of a prank and the story of it is pretty fucking funny so I'll try to get down to writing about that soon.

But as for the beautiful Angela, she was waiting for me just past the security gate at San Francisco International Airport after my much-delayed flight across the country (thanks for nothing, AirTran). No sight I can imagine could have been more welcome than what my eyes beheld when I saw her standing there (apologies to the Beatles).

The large window in our room high in the tower of the Fairmont Hotel at Nob Hill looked to the north. Far to left was the Golden Gate Bridge, obscured by fog most afternoons. Also within view were Alcatraz Island, Coit Tower, the Bay Bridge and lots of little tiny cars and people. The room itself was gorgeous and, thanks to Angela's deft negotiating skills, was occupied by us for far below its going rate. Prior to my trip out there and further explaining my MIA status from OS, I made another candle holder to commorate our time together in that great city. It is pictured below on the window sill our our hotel room.

See Coit Tower out there?

On our first night together we had dinner at Fleur de Lys.  Never before have I had a dining experience like this...a four course dinner with wine pairings for each course. Incredible food and the best dinner companion a man could hope for; we had much to talk about and the conversation was both intimate and lively.  Angela was in a stunning black dress and simply radiant. Fellas, there are no words to describe what it was like to sit across the table from this woman.

During our days there we did touristy things like walk the steep streets around the hotel, spent some time exploring Chinatown and we nearly crashed a party at a ritzy house over by the Palace of Fine Arts but chickened out at the last minute. We also took a windy boat ride to Alcatraz and walked up some amazing stair cases past the gorgeous hillside homes below Coit Tower.

In addition to spending time in the city itself, we day tripped north to Napa which was beautiful and, while world famous for the wineries in its vicinity (at which several we partook of their offerings), it should also be known for, in this visitor's humble opinion, Joe's Downtown Brewery and the magnificent garlic fries to be had there. And believe me, we had them. Mmm...très bon! At our last winery stop of the day, we walked under low hanging oak trees and through a lovely garden, treating our palettes to a  sparkling white and committing a minor crime. On another day in Sausalito we spent the morning checking out the shops and had a lunch of modestly presented yet tasty fish and chips enjoyed on a sidewalk table. That afternoon we ran up a surprisingly large bar tab at a waterfront restaurant in Tiburon.

It had to end all too quickly and I was forced to endure another of AirTran's flying bus rides back here to the east coast. Like each of the proceeding times we've had together, this trip was uniquely beautiful in its experience. The fantastic memories are fresh and soon I will return as I cannot bear to be away from her for very long. Next month we'll be bundled up and taking in the low rumble of Pacific waves while sipping wine on the beach near an undisclosed little town we both love.

Thank you for reading. I hope to be here on OS commenting and posting more often as fall begins in earnest with changing leaves and cooler air.

Nice to see you back and love my city and that the wo of you are in love still and looks like forever..
that makes me smile.
Rated with hugs
Well. Finally an explanation, long overdue. You've been AWOL, Smithery, and so has OM. Don't think it hasn't been noticed.

Seriously, thanks for the updates. Glad things are still going strong between you two and that everything's OK on all fronts.
I definitely miss San Francisco since moving out to Michigan. Your photo of the Golden Gate Bridge just brings back so many memories. Glad you were able to hook up with some people from OS.
Hooray! Man, if that's not a great time, I don't know what is . . . thanks for sharing!
Sweetheart! My goodness, you've been busy!!!

This was absolutely delightful to read!! Of course, I knew of these many thing keeping you occuppied, but you also know how much I love your writing. I was laughing and "awwww"ing the whole way through.

I hadn't seen the latest doll mansion picture, though - love the windows and door!

And, of course, I loved the description of our beautiful time together in San Francisco. Gosh, reading in one fell swoop so many of the things we did together made you both closer and further away - as often happens when we reminisce or talk of our future together. I loved our time together and look forward to our visit next month.

Can't wait to see the next candleholder - is there anything you can't do???

Thank you for writing again, sweetheart. It's just different from our regular daily emails & texts. I love this side of you. Now post again soon, 'K??
(Darn iPhone.) I also wanted to say I love you.

*things*
Darn iPhone - also won't let me back up to proofread! Are there more typos in my comments...??? :-) I'm sure there are...
Angela ~ This was fun to write and I wish I had time to write more often. Thank you, sweetheart. As for the doll mansion, I just stuck the windows in for the photo ;)

I can't wait for our next time together...it can't come soon enough. I love you, too ~xoxoxo~
Linda - Thank you. It was my second visit ever to San Francisco, the first being when I was only 16. Being there with Angela made it truly fantastic.

BR - Yes, I know sir and apologies. Thank you for your words and I do think I'll be on more often as the days get shorter. I have a lot to catch up on. And you bet things are still going strong!

Duane - Welcome and thank you for reading. You did catch that the "Golden Gate Bridge" in the photo is not the real thing, right? ;)

Owl - My dear friend, thank you for coming by. It really was a great time and I can't wait to see her again...soon, but not soon enough.
Lovely, lovely stories. Glad to hear all is going well and you are SO productive.
You have indeed been busy, my friend and in a good way it would seem. You and Angela have both been missed and I hope that soon you can both be around on a more regular basis.
Great to have you back!
Envy you your 11-year-old girl. Love that age, so on the cusp of teenhood and a child still.
Thanks for the lovely picture you paint with words.
Deborah - I have been busy but, except for the yard work, it's been great! Thank you so much for reading.

David - My good friend, I have missed you too, as has Angela. Thank you and I do plan to be around more. It may be a while yet for Angela, unfortunately. Her schedule is very demanding these days but she does get on when she can.

o'steph - It's great to be back, thanks! She is still a little girl but those teen years are close. This morning she was complaining about her hair!
nice to read you. your summer sounds hectic but fulfilling. i do hope that soon you and Angela come together never to part... it's a seriously cool thing: experience tells me so.
Your candleholder! Brilliant. Yeah, the garlic fries in the Bay area are amazing, even at AT&T Park. Glad to see you back. Best to OM.
Good to see you writing again. SF is an incredible city, isn't it. My wife and I spent our honeymoon there and returned twice each year for many years when we lived in Southern California. It's a city that never eds of tings to do.

Glad you two enjoyed yourselves and the evening at Fleur de lys sounds incredible.
Chuck - You're my hero, man. I am incredibly happy for you. Our day will come, it just may take some time.

Stim - Thank you...it was actually pretty funny walking through the lobby of the hotel with that candle holder. It's good to be back and I know Angela returns your good wishes.
Bob! - So good to "see" you. It really was an amazing trip and we will definitely be spending more time in the city on future visits. We're opting for a more quiet and intimate visit next month. My best you and your lovely bride.
"tis wonderful to read these lovely memories you two lived together. All's forgiven for the good cause. :o) You can go missing anytime if it's for a cause like this - as long as you come back and share some. ~R
Fusun - I'll hold you to that :) Thank you.
So glad to hear that things are going well. I liked that you save the best for last! :) And am now jealousing over the Fairmont, Fleur de Lys and Napa... *sigh*
love is all there is. R. welcome back.
Dema - Things are indeed going well. The Fairmont is a beautiful hotel and the location was perfect. The staff was great and very accommodating to our request for a view room. My suggestion? Go!

Bea - Truer words have not been spoken. I'm so glad you stopped by, thank you.
So good to see you back Smithery and so glad to hear that you and Angela are better than ever!!
Trilogy - You're very kind...thank you. Angela and I are better than ever and very much looking forward to our next visit.
You built that dollhouse?!?!?! Impressive. I love dollhouses.

And next time, head up to Sonoma County. The wine is better than Napa's. ;)
One of these times we will have to meet, you two and me. I am only an hour plus a little away from the bay. It would be wonderful to meet you both!!!
sweetfeet - Thanks! I'm not much of a woodworker, but this was really fun. Tomorrow we'll be painting! We will definitely head out to Sonoma in the future.

LL2 - We would love to meet you! Angela and I have talked about having an Bay Area OS meet up during one of my visits. We will one of these times, I'm sure of it.
It was good to see that you had posted. You have been missed by me as well. I love the updates on you and Angela. I am so happy for the two of you to have found something so real online. To be able to visit each other is even better! Your absence is definitely forgiven. Oh, and I love the doll mansion!
Ah, love in the loveliest of cities...~r
Thanks so much for the lovely update! Though I don't know you well, the up to speed quality of this post made me feel I want to ...and now I know you a bit better. So happy for your gladness and your return! r
Sorry for getting here so late. Man, I love a great love story! To all those who are skeptic about love, you and OM are the living, breathing proof as to its infinite possibilities. That, my friend, is a service you give to us all! And ... as you and I and OM have agreed before ... you get out of love what you give. Great loves are ALL about giving ... Quid Pro Quo. {{{R}}}
pastvoices – Thank you so much for your good wishes. I’ve been trying to be on more but still seems like I’m away quite a bit. And thanks for the compliment on the “mansion” :)

Joan – Welcome! Nothing quite like it, that’s for sure.

PM – You're very kind for stopping by, I hope you do again…if I ever get more posts up! Thank you.

Rod – It is a great love story; you’ve got that right! And you’ve read our minds…we also believe the possibilities are infinite and, absolutely, you’ve got to give. The joy, really, is in that giving. Thank you buddy!
Oh this was worth the wait. If I would have known you would be going to the Fairmont I would have had you check for the slacks I left there...in 1978.

Sounds wonderful really, and your dollhouse is magnificent. I had one quite similar and all told when I finished filling it with every conceivable accessory the tab was a down payment on a house. Be careful.

Say hello to A. for me.
Buffy - So what was going on in that hotel room that caused you to leave without your pants? ;) Yes; we'll be careful when accessorizing the doll house - eBay is our friend in that regard. Thank you for coming by, Buffy.
