There are those on Open Salon who jealously guard the written word. Not surprising considering that this territory was settled, fenced off and farmed by writers.
Cartoons can be a powerful medium. Boss Tweed said about Thomas Nast "Stop them damn pictures. I don't care what the papers write about me. My constituents can't read. But, damn it, they can see the pictures."
My friend, S. Clay Wilson, and world famous pornographer and fellow cartoonist, once said "If you're not good enough to be a cartoonist, maybe you can be an artist."
My feeling about it is, we should be more magnanimous. Especially towards cartoonists, who seem to be taking a bit of heat. Of course, my generous stance is somewhat specious because I draw cartoons.
In my mind OS should be plastered with prose, poetry, rant, cartoons, comic strips, music and art of all kinds. However creativity chooses to manifest itself it ought to be untethered and allowed to freely rollick and brawl here on OS. After all, this site is called Open Salon, not Closed Salon.
That would still leave much to complain about, should one want to piss and moan.
So anyway...here are some cartoons.

I don't care much for exclusionists in a venue such as OS, there's enough exclusion going on in the rest of our lives. What is wrong with a little empathy and embracing? What?
You keep making me laugh and I'll keep tuning in. Totally legit complaint.
Goodnight, thanks for the laughs before bed!
Yes. Yes! And with cartoons like these, can anyone have any reason to complain?
Usually have a fav but this time can't choose. I'm with Ariana, though, laughed out loud at "Hey Soose".
;)
Someone mentioned initiating Fiction Friday. For a site that is mostly about writing, you'd think that fiction would have a home here, but I don't see that happening much. Just an idea I agree with. I love the open format, but everything can be improved.
Thanks for posting these, Skip. What a great change of pace.
Worth repeating. Your plug dreaming of a bulb displays a curious genius.
maybe you could collect all the posts on here where people dis the cartoons.
I see one famous case C. actually endorsing you on your blog. hahaha.
I agree with you, great cartooning is a tremendous art, it has a real zen feel to it. and humorless people [there are quite a few on here] of course aint gonna like it. its a disorder!! it can be treated, but only if the victim admits their problem.
