My High School friend on FaceBook recently posted a result from a new website called: “I Write Like”. She posted that she wrote like David Foster Wallace, but would not share the material that she used. I think it was from a very private journal.
I decided to give the site’s algorithm a shot with my last post on OS. I write like Vladimir Nabokov! No one has ever made that comparison; I tried again with another post. I also write like Stephen King. I’ve never read King because he is too scary for me. Maybe I will read his book on writing that is advertised heavily by Amazon on the site.
I analyzed nine other posts and my writing is just like seven other writers. I must be very versatile. In fact, when I looked at the FaceBook page for the I Write Like site, it looks as though others have found that famous writers don’t even write like themselves. I found an interview with the creator of the algorithm, Dmitry Chestnykh, there are fifty authors in the system and the authors’ most famous works are used as templates.
This exercise just made me realize: 1 that we are all multi-dimensional as writers and that we do evolve. 2.I do not write like any female authors. 3.I am susceptible to advertising because I bought Stephen King's book on writing 4. This post is like H.P. Lovecraft and 5.I want to see my friend’s very personal diary.
