I love champagne. Well, I love alcohol, in general. Especially when I'm having a bad hair day.

Top 11 Late Night Snacks--It's Amazing I'm Not 200 Pounds

Rate: 9 Flag

Most people have sweet tooths. They like a little ice cream or some kind of sweet baked good. My dad's favorite snack is M&Ms. Somtimes he'll dump a bunch into a small amount of peanut butter and eat it with a spoon.

But not me. I have savory taste buds. Our family's schedule is a little backward with me working days and my husband working nights. I often stay up later than I should just to get 30 minutes of alone time with him.

All that time from when The Girl goes to bed to when he gets home, makes me a little snacky. I don't typically snack on the normal stuff like potato chips and popcorn, though I've been to include them in a late night snack.

So tonight I wait for husband to get home, and while I'm watching an inspirational episode of Iron Chef America (they are cooking with olives tonight), here is a list of my favorite late night snacks, starting with what I'm snacking on now:

* Pita chips with a small cup of spinach-artichoke-jalapano dip. This dip is so awesome mixed with a little garlic and dill. Simply Naked pita chips are the best, hands down.

* Cheese quesadilla with corn tortillas and whatever kind of cheese is in the fridge. Feta, tomato and olives are great; or sharp cheddar and a meat, like shredded chicken or a thin slice of ham or deli turkey.

* Mini nachos with the works, salsa and a dollop of sour cream mixed with taco seasoning.

* Apples and peanut butter. Doesn't get much simpler than that, though celery is good too.

* Shrimp scampi. Yes, you read correctly: shrimp scampi. I crave this easy-to-whip-up dish when I'm PMSing. Husband kindly makes it for me sometimes when he gets home at 11 p.m. Four to eight shrimp is a perfect late night portion tossed with olive oil, garlic, chives, white wine and a touch of butter. Yum yum yummy yum.

* Taquitos. I buy them at Costco, they rock. I only need two or three with a dollop of sour cream mixed with taco seasoning and some hot sauce.

* Bowl of fresh strawberries in milk, sprinkled with sugar.

* Small bowl of purple grapes mixed into cottage cheese. Weird combo, I know. But the tart skin of the grape, the sweet flesh of the grape and texture of the cottage cheese is really satisfying and quite filling.

* Refried beans mixed with scrambled eggs and a flour tortilla. I grew up on beans 'n' eggs for breakfast. My mom and sister love it too.

* Slice of Swiss cheese topped with a slice of dill pickle and a dollop of mustard on top. The flavors of this slittle stack are surprisingly awesome.

* Columbus hard salami and a good crusty bread spred thinly with mayo.

That's all I can think of right now. It really just depends on what I've got in my fridge at 11 p.m., and I try to make the most of it!

What do your taste buds crave in the late night?
Comfort food snack style. Summer sausage or pepperoni and a sharp tasty cheese microwaved until the meat gives up its golden oily nectar, and the cheese is brown and crisp as if it were fried.
I will never get over soft cheeses like Brie or Cambozola spread on crusty French bread. And why are naked pita chips so delicious? They are my downfall. Also, fresh strawberries dipped in sour cream, then in brown sugar. Dear God. I am starving. You are RUINING my resolve, and I love you for it.
Whoa FirstAwake ... strawberries dipped in sour cream, THEN brown sugar? That sounds absolutely delectable.

And isn't naked always better? I'm just saying.
Does Maker's Mark count as a late-night snack?

How about a martini?

I'm also of the hard-salami-and-good-cheese school of snackage. But mostly I'm a nonsnacker. Lord knows what would happen if I actually ate every time I'm hungry--I'd certainly outgrow the rest of my wardrobe right quick!
Great list. Some of them are in my late snack list, too.

,,Bowl of fresh strawberries in milk, sprinkled with sugar."
I really have to try this.

And the picture above your entry is just too cute.
Oh Verbal, shame on me for leaving fine alcohol off the list. It certainly does count!
I'm a savory person also, so just about all of your snacks sound perfectly wonderful!

I make quesadillas most often :)
BuffyW, me too. You can make so many fun versions of savory quesadillas. Thanks for commenting!
Well, you know, now that I think of it, there are OLIVES in a martini, and olives are a VEGETABLE, which means the martini is a seriously healthy snack!
I love that photo! I just ate a whole bag of popcorn and it isn't even 6 yet!!
I'm with Verbal - good bourbon (Basil Hayden) is one of my favorite late-night snacks!

Otherwise - I may have to try some of the things you've mentioned, as they are making my mouth water. Usually, I'll just go for whatever delicious cheese we have hanging around, edamame with sea salt, or sugar snap peas with onion dip.
Ooooh, potato chips with onion dip or popcorn. I have a "salt tooth." Tacquitos though...haven't had tacquitos in months. Must go to grocery store!
Carbohydrates....always carbohydrates late at night: ice cream, cereal, cheese. They seem to have some sleep-inducing quality and take the longest to break down through the midnight hours.
It all sounds heavenly, and here I am starving at work! Soooo not fair.
I'm with you, O savory one!

1. Scrambled eggs with capers, olives and feta.
2. Fried egg with slide of swiss chesee, on toast with aioli
3. toasted english muffin spread with tomato paste, topped with black olives and feta, broiled for 2 minutes
4. popcorn with garlic butter (smash and juice cloves fresh) and parmesan
4. thick rounds of summer sausage topped with jalapeno cheese
5. blue cheese and feta quesadilla

I could go on but my stomach is growling....
