How cool is this?
More is a 1.3 million circulation lifestyle magazine that focuses on women 40 years and older. One of its loyal subscribers contacted the magazine to see about getting a digital subscription because she is leaving town. OK, she's not leaving town.
She's leaving planet Earth.
Turns out, NASA astronaut Nicole Stott is scheduled to take the space shuttle Discovery to the International Space Station where she will spend four months. The magazine obliged her request for a digital subscription and asked if she would be a guest blogger for its companion website More.com. She said yes! She will be blogging on her experiences preparing for the shuttle launch and through her stay on the space station.
She writes on her inaugural post: “At 46 years old, I’m a mother, I’m a wife, and I’m a NASA astronaut who’s about to make her first space flight. I’m writing this blog to try and share some of my experiences preparing for the flight and then once in orbit I hope there will be some surprising things to share with you about living and working in space.”
Now there are a couple things I love about this situation. First is that a subscriber loves a magazine so much that she made an effort to take it with her on a trip off the planet. How affirming for More’s editors. They should be proud of their product. I also love that whomever answered Stott’s call in the fulfillment office took the time to find out that Stott wasn’t just an every day subscriber and direct the info to the editors.
The September issue, on newsstands Aug. 25, includes an interview with Stott. I offer my sincere congratulations to More for great creativity in connecting with its core audience. I hope the blog is successful and well-liked by readers, as I suspect it will. It’s one blog I’m definitely bookmarking.
