The Coffee Storm

Storm birds
Flew perpendicular to the wind
And every one watched
Sideways
Sidewalk sliding to meet them
Each high rise floor accessible from the ground

Coffee rained from the clouds, which were ominous
The storm birds saw simply a sea of upturned mugs
Park meters dispensed cream and sugar, one… Read full post »

What to Tell Billy

Tell him that you are lynx trapper, fierce with skis. Tell him the rooster is screaming next door in the snow, rabid for you to awake at 3 pm in the afternoon. Tell him you lied. Tell him you forgot. Tell him you weren’t quite sure, but you did the best… Read full post »

Don’t get all worked up.  Didn’t mean to steal your newspaper Buddy.

I’m not as fabulous as you might think, although I wear lipstick well.

Truly, my finger nails are atrocious and I have difficulty carrying a coffee cup without spilling, although this mRead full post »

Generally Speaking, there was no beat down so hard that they wouldn’t keep coming back the next day for more, those neighborhood thugs, seemed like they liked it. Ran through the alley in a hoodie and somehow evaded those cops.

In good humor...

In Reponse to Mary Elizabeth Williams

In her recent post on Salon, Mary Elizabeth Williams asks: "Why Shouldn't the Dugger's Grieve a Miscarriage?"

Why? Here's why.  Because whether they are grieving or not is not the question! This group would filter this question through the old "The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away" - tot… Read full post »

I am defiant of your courage and your demands in this red dress with my sword tucked into my stiletto. Your bravado does not scare me, nor do your tears or demands of the sun, nor your Madre or your Padre or the ghosts of your Abuelo… Read full post »

 Prague II

Do you remember the feel of our bones lying so gently on each other in sleep separated by the parchment on which our miles are written? These stories will fade and yellow by the time we have been to Prague 20 more summers.

When I first met you, youRead full post »

Dreaming Americana

This cigarette tastes like Shawarma she says, laughing and puffing smoke in the cold air, standing in a puddle.

Because that was what was left, laughter.

Because her friend had overdosed, and the judge had taken her license and none of them could get healthcare for the life of them, hRead full post »

The Latin Compromise

“ I am not really good at compromise, she wrote, so this is a new thing for me, and so far, I've handled it as you may expect a small Latin Woman to handle anything she resents- with tequila and a fire hydrant of wordiness… and no compromise whatsoever. Bah.”

Only the Beautiful Things

Questions and Answers

For Gabriella

She told me today that everything had become insignificant since her best friend, her husband had died. Tear inducing, but I didn’t cry, but I took it to heart and won’t forget.

I asked her what she would like and she replied

Yellow Plates, Red Boxes

Retina Expedition

Unblinking I climb to the midway of the mountain. It became apparent as I looked at the city below that I would have to climb further. The smoke was still rising and the snake of the highway was a colorful link of leaving cars, paper

A Day in December

You ask me when we met, because perhaps we should commemorate and I cannot puzzle it out to exactness because the day we met has dissolved into perfectly unaccountable miles

A Diversity of Stripes

A Diversity of Stripes

Today’s the day but all the other days were too, as far as I’m concerned, when the elephant licked the envelope and put it in the mail to Florida, hoping to find his mother who had joined a different circus.

Well that doesn’t makeRead full post »

The Location of the Soul

The Location of the Soul

He was looking for the location of his soul and he pointed to his head as he questioned, like a newly spoken child naming eyes, and nose, appendages. His books were thick, read and discarded, read again, referenced and still to him the location ofRead full post »

I’m cooking a fish she said, throwing paint at the canvas and wrapping the scarf tighter around/

The Color of Carp

The sky is an inked stained grey and there is twisted metal in the corner bar. The offices are closed for the holiday and the pink lady that sells coffee is home with her children.

This is a ridiculous affair that we’re having, in search of hat shops and pins. Give me/… Read full post »
