I once saw a young woman physically yearning
Bent on her steering wheel, practically crying
At the sight of a small boy wrapped up in a snowsuit
With a long woolen scarf wound around, head to toe.

It was evening and starting to snow.
The red light had turned green but she still did not go.
He was crossing the road and was lit by the headlight.
Look at him, she said laughing. Just pushing along.

Something about the little kid's effortful trudging
Or was it his motherless journey toward home
Arrested her motion and impaled her to need.
Her husband, beside her, reached out for her hand.

Her pain, it was old, he could easily read.
I, in the back seat, simply curious, pitied her.
My own yearning was nowhere as easy to focus
Involving oceans and mountains and animal friendships

And moving though barriers that made human talk futile
And an endlessly tedious and long, lonely slog.
Looking back, I'd have got it
If she'd wanted a dog.

Oooooo....... not your usual sort of poem at all! This is very deep and multi-layered. Very good!
