What to Remember

The dailyness of life
The laundry white and flapping in the breeze.
Storm coming up over the back yards.
White frame houses, charcoal sky.
Mother in her dress hurrying to get it in before the rain.
Was this real, or did I read this long ago?

Offerings
The elderly grandmother in her apron in the doorway
Waving goodbye
Saying, one last time, Are you sure you won't have some peaches?
She served instant coffee. I said it was delicious.
At ninety three, she was still busy
Sewing for the Church.
Priests' robes. Shrouds. There will be one for her.

Busyness
Nothing to remember here.
All the crises blow on by
Things get done.

Photographs
Someone I knew
Said to her each photograph had said goodbye.
No, no. Never goodbye. Each photograph I make says
Stay!
For always, just like this.
In this very light. With your hand just so.

Sins of Omission
All begin with "Should."
I should have stopped in more.
I should have listened more.
I should have loved. I should have loved
Each little daily detail
More.

Oh my! This is seriously beautiful.... It hit me between the eyes.
The "photograph" stanza is superb.
