Meditations on Leadership

Rate: 11 Flag

Courage

Running the point (i.e. leadership) in the high stakes game of social and political discourse carries an element of risk.  Changing the status quo has significant financial implications.  Those who stand to lose do not sit by idly as the opposition begins visibly building consensus.  They seek to eliminate anyone and anything deemed to be a threat to their power and control.  No one is more vulnerable than the leader.

This same scenario is played out all over corporate America everyday.  I once pierced the cloud cover and gained a seat at the table. I saw greed and self interest had the upper hand.  In many instances, doing what was just and right only occurred when such action also benefited the financial goals of the company.  Callous leaders often made decisions detrimental to the long term health of the organization in the name of short term personal gain.  Others acquiesced. In order to maintain their stature and protect their future they chose the path of least resistance.   The idealists who valued people over profit were few and far between. The greedy identified them as enemies of the state and sought to marginalize and eliminate them at every turn.  I was an idealist. I was eliminated.

Materialism is seductive.  Once we acquire the trappings of success, we are often unwilling to risk losing what we’ve worked so hard to obtain.  It’s not until the fight reaches our front door, that we are willing to take up arms and defend ourselves. Even if we are willing to take a risk, we must also consider the impact upon our family and loved ones whose lives will be impacted by our decisions.  This was a hard life lesson I had to learn when I got bounced from the boardroom.

The corporate landscape and the political landscape appear to be one and the same.  The MIC, big business and big government have exercised a creeping control over our lives. Visualizing where this is all headed is the easy part.  Mounting a successful counter attack is a real challenge.  As I said, those who have the most to lose will not go quietly.

I applaud the change agents who have the courage to step out in front and lead.  They are my heroes; because they are willing to risk everything for what is right.  I salute the writers (Dennis Loo, Judy Mandelbaum, Scanner, VZN, Jack Heart, Soap Box Amy, David Cox, Kind of Blue, Ron P01, Zen Haitain, Bill Beck, Rick Lucke) who continually shine a light on injustice and challenge our collective complacency.  You are the signposts in the wilderness, serving as constant reminders that all is not right with the world.

As a humanist, and a pacifist, I struggle with what we’ve become.  Although I choose not to lead, I stand strongly in support of those whose ultimate goal is the common good of all who inhabit this planet.  I won’t be the person standing on the soap box with the megaphone in my hand.  I will be the face in the crowd with my fist in the air, urging solidarity toward a righteous cause.

Love the photo! (I think, however, that the kid needs to take him on in a different sport where he has a chance to win.)

We need lots and lots of people with their fists in the air to succeed.

What you say about your boardroom experience, as you note, applies equally well in political settings.
I'll be standing in the crowd with you, Doc!
"I was an idealist. I was eliminated." Been there...more than once. Take heart, SD, we're in good company though the beat has been going on for an apparently, very long time...

"I conceive that the great part of the miseries of mankind are brought upon them by false estimates they have made of the value of things."
Benjamin Franklin

"He that is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money."
Benjamin Franklin

"Hide not your talents. They for use were made. What's a sundial in the shade?"

Dennis –

I may not be the trunk or the branch, but I can certainly be the leaf on the tree.

FTD –

Thanks for backing me up.

Mothership –

We are two of many who have tasted the buzz of the saw.
That's an interesting assessment of some of those writers.
Spin, you don't know how much this means to me. You are a man of honor who I have the honor of calling a friend. Great Post!
Teendoc –

Mea Culpa for leaving you off my list of admired writers of social commentary on OS. You had my back when I first started out on OS. The truth shall set us free! I recognize my list is not all encompassing (I ask forgiveness of those I may have overlooked), nor does it define the writer, as we are infinitely more complex than the things we choose to write about. These are folks with the gumption to tell it like it is, damn the torpedoes.

Scanner –

You are an original bro. There is not a thing that’s plastic about you.
Thank you S.D. You mentioned me in a grouping with some mighty fine people.

And tell Dennis that my Cavs are coming for his Lakers. An Ohioan never forgets!
In many instances, doing what was just and right only occurred when such action also benefited the financial goals of the company.

The quintessential indictment of capitalism

Materialism is seductive.

Doc the only thing that is seductive is a beautiful women the rest is all just brightly colored beads

Mounting a successful counter attack is a real challenge.

Great challenges make great men

As I said, those who have the most to lose will not go quietly.

I don't know about you Doc but the prospect of hearing their anguished screams serves as a motivational tool for me

I wrote all of the above comments without knowing my name was in here until I read it I am honored. Doc you are an extremely perceptive man you seem to know where all this is going I am also well aware of the destination I just hope some of the others are.
Your post reminds me of what I read about Rahm Emanuel recently. He said, "The only nonnegotiable principle here is success." So, the White House, in Rahm's opinion, doesn't stand on principle about anything? How is it acceptable for a U.S. government official to come right out and say -- hey we're unprincipled?

Have you read Michael Moore's book, "Stupid White Men." I think you would enjoy it. It's laughing out loud funny in many parts. One section that wasn't so funny (the Urban League just released some sobering figures on the status of blacks in the U.S.) was where he talks about corporate America and how they pigeonhole certain positions to put the black people. The receptionist is invariably black -- to show how liberal they are. The personnel department is where most of the high-ranking blacks work -- mostly because they have zero likelihood of ever making it to the boardroom.

Spin, thank you for being a good friend to me here on OpenSalon.

The corporate boardrooms of America sure could use more people like you. Their loss.
wow, thanks for the plug. Im mutually inspired, wink

its called "corporatocracy".... and we've fought & transcended it before in our american history.... in the gilded age/robber barons age.. takes a slightly different form this time, but we shall overcome...
by the way your first paragraph sounds like straight from Machiavelli..... who actually was quite wise in many ways.... a pragmatist... I saw a great article in huffpost where a guy suggested obama needed to study machiavelli, & I agreed wholeheartedly..... I am frankly quite stunned that health care passed, it seemed like it was hanging by a thread only a few weeks ago.... sometimes you're the bug, and sometimes you're the windshield... or is it vice versa this time? time will tell.....

Cavs v. Lakers was the series that was supposed to happen last year. Bring on the Nike puppets!

JH –

I long to see the charismatic visionary who can once and for all unmask the imposters that continually pretend to be acting in our best interest, as they strip the nation of its wealth.

Zen –

The administration’s true agenda is, at times, so transparent that it’s laughable. The healthcare debacle is a shining example. All but one of the top 6 major healthcare stocks increased as direct result of the President signing the new legislation.

I will add Mr. Moore’s book to my reading list. Corporations tend to diversify from the bottom up. Key executive financial positions are the absolute last rung on the ladder of change.

Thanks for the positive feedback. You are a good friend as well.

VZN –

I, too, feel confident that we will survive the current power grab. We live in Machiavellian times. Any similarity in my discourse was purely unintentional. As for Obama, I am disappointed that he made backdoor deals with the insurance companies. It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.
We are already a Fascist nation. Look up scholar and historian Lawrence Britt's study of Fascist nations and the characteristics they all shared, noting how every one of those characteristics is already well established HERE in the USA.

How ironic that it is the Right Wing, the Fascists, who believe violence and war solve all problems and that control of the people and curtailing their rights is paramount. Fascist nations concentrate all their resources on the military and law enforcement as is increasingly happening here. No social services for children, the elderly, the mentally ill or disabled, no attempts to alleviate poverty. Poor kids can join the military, after all.

But in spite of this war orientation, Americans have been brainwashed to fear the Left! How ironic that the Left has always worked for workers' rights, social justice, the end of poverty, opportunities and basic human rights for all....you know....basically the same stuff Jesus advocated. As Jesus said, "Whatsoever ye do unto these the least of my brethren, ye do unto me...."

Racism still prevails in this nation in the 21st century as the Right is so vividly demonstrating these days. That the USA should be racist at all at any time during its history contradicts everything it stands for! No racist nation is a great nation. Ever. Racism will ruin this nation yet!
Nations? They strip entire civilizations tearing them apart as they breath like a school of piranha's rending the flesh from its victim. The Doors - Easy Ride
Soap Box Amy –

Fascism and racism threaten to destroy us from within.

Fear is a very potent weapon. Fighting for freedom, pre-emptive strikes, hoarding of resources, anti immigration policies all stem from fear.
Civilization. And I'll do anything to protect it.
