Regarding That Murderer With The Muslim Name

Rate: 11 Flag

The recent shooting rampage at Fort Hood is the supreme test of what it means to be a real American! This is our moment to shine! This is the time to reflect on the diversity of the melting pot we call the United States of America. This is the time to rise above the prejudice, the mistrust, the hatred, the religious dogma and all the pettiness that has detracted from the great experiment of our Democratic Republic.

The man who killed 13 innocent people was a human being first. As we are tempted to focus on his name and his religion, we should focus not on what he did, but on what good Muslim/American citizens are saying about what he did. As we are tempted to focus on the dogma of Islam to support the anger and fear we feel, we should focus instead on the positive aspects of Islam that call for peace, love and understanding. As we are inundated with the rants of fearful, hateful people who call for revenge, we should focus instead on the race, religion, ethnicity and nationality of others who have committed similar atrocities, realizing that we are not separate, but all the same.

In the world of us and them, we are all equally guilty of atrocities, but also capable of compassion and love. In the present moment the US has all the elements of what have historically led other cultures to their darkest hours. If we truly are in the process of reclaiming our respect in the world community, then all good peace loving Americans of all faiths need to stand up today, embracing our peace loving Muslim brothers and sisters around the world, standing together against prejudice, hatred and violence!

Fuck that bastard! He killed 13 people. I don't give a damn if he's a wiccan~
Very interesting feeling I have now, being bombarded with such anger when I was trying to express a point that obviously went right over your head. I wasn't defending him or what he did. I am defending all the innocent people who will be hurt by those who become him on whatever level that might be. Peace!
I would agree with you if I had seen CAIR or some of the other groups stand up and say that this man, and all the others, are wrong. If they have please send me the link and I'll change my view. Until they stand up and say what a few are doing is wrong, then it's the radical, not ordinary, Muslins against us.
So far this is the most revealing post I have ever made. I know individual Muslims. Personal experience in my own life to draw from. I don't think I need to provide a link to an organization to prove that "all Muslims are not terrorists." I am shocked by the first two responses and find it a little scary. The guy was also a soldier. Does that mean all soldiers are bad? Prejudice is prejudice. Generalizations are generalizations. Where does it stop?

It stops with me!
Good post! We need to fight against mental illness, not against our neighbors.
Spirit man, again another good post. To the point.
The current dynamic in this country is tailor-made to assume that if a Muslim commits a crime, any kind of crime, it's "part of the plot."

I don't recall anyone making an issue of Timothy McVeigh's Christian upbringing.

I'm angry that this happened, very angry, but I don't care about his religion. I do care about his state of mind, and maybe we will find out more about that.
"I know individual Muslims. Personal experience in my own life to draw from."

The same goes for me. And I'll tell anyone who asks that what we don't know about Islam, in our stupendous fear-filled ignorance, should shame every damn one of us into silence. I would gladly choose a peaceful Muslim as a friend over a militant Christian any day of the week.

The man is a killer. That's inexcusable. But punish him on that basis, and no other.

A very thoughtful post, Spirit Man.
You just know that all those that were so quick to point out his religion were hoping like hell that the shooter in Florida was a Muslim as well. Sick.
SpiritMan - You're right this isn't about religion. I've served with Muslims, several of them, who had nothing but resepect for our country and for life. They were true muslims, not people using a beleif system to foster violence and hatred.
I get what you were saying.
I still think this bastard needs to swing, and that he personally was a coward and a scum bag, but that says nothing about the religion of Islam, and you drew attention to the fact that people need to realize that.

Rated.
I agree. I don't care what religion he is. He's a murdering SOB. Every time someone kills a person, people bring up their religion, or their childhood, etc. This man is a M-u-r-d-e-r-e-r, period!!
Thank you scanner, for the clarification.
Amen. As soon as I heard the horrible news I knew that some folks would want to make this into a Muslim thing. My Muslim friends fear it too. I hope peace and reason win out. You have articulated it beautifully. Peace.
Thank you for your post. It is vital that we not use this tragedy as an excuse to further hatred. Justice is called for...not ignorant bigotry.
Have we heard, did he do this in the name of Ala, or Islam,or some other dumb shit,or did he just blow a gaskit?
I meen it may have had not a damn thing to do with religion or what ever,it may have just been a mental melt down.
look at it as the other side of the coin: the usa has been waging asymmetric warfare on the middle eastern peoples for 60 years. now and then, they strike back, either directly on 9/11, or indirectly through this apparently insane human being caught in the psychological wood chipper of connection to both sides of the struggle.
SpiritManSF,

I know people of the Muslim faith. I was engaged to one. The problem here isn't all anything. It's never all anything. The problem I have is when something anti Muslim happens CAIR and the like come out of the woodwork to condemn what happened. Now that a Muslim shouts their garbage and kills lots of people where are they? My problem isn't with the Muslims of the world it's with groups like CAIR.
