OS _ constructive criticism _ SPAM

Rate: 8 Flag

I just went to comment on another Editors Pick and found that the comments were closed due to Spam. On my most recent post in the last 24 hours I have deleted more than 50 pieces of Spam. Is it not possible to delete the accounts of the spammers since some of them are the same persons who have been spamming for months?

This has gone way beyond a mere annoyance now. It is obsessive! It is now affecting the ability of the users of OS to communicate with each other in the comments section.

There's supposedly a re-work of the site in the build but until then, we must fight or something, I'm not sure what, but god damn spammers are winning, I'm thinking.

Keep the spirit....or something.
Thanks for the hope!
I spend an incredible amount of time deleting spam. It is completely annoying.
I feel for the people who have been placed on the front page recently. It seems to be worse than it's ever been. And it's impossible to delete them as they occur, unless you're here constantly to keep up with it. That's just not possible for a lot of people. Then, of course, it does get really difficult for people leaving comments and trying to have a conversation.
it is time to end all spam

If and while they are looking for another solution, why is it not possible to simply delete the accounts of those who are doing the spamming? That's what I don't understand. They are obvious. That's all they do on OS, is spam!
Here's the latest spammer I just deleted. Could it be more obvious that this is not a real person?

Spam is "God's" way of telling you that you are spending too much time here.

Seriously, I very rarely get any spam comments myself - and when I become of aware of them I immediately delete them - but I spend way, way too much time here and, if I never get spammed, then I have to wonder how much time you all spend here to get so much spam.

I think spam may be a consequence of your success on Open Salon, which is why I am happy with my two dozen readers. (Okay, that was big black lie but so what?)

I don't believe the new build myth because I know that I could eradicate this shit with a few lines of code and making a couple of new rules.

No listens to me though.
I completely agree. There is something very wrong here. I was in the feed for a few hours yesterday and I was spammed. It seems the front page has more to do with this than anything. I was also on Salon the other day and there on one of their posts in the comment section was spam. What? How come this is so common on OS and Salon and not on Huffington Post and other sites? I just don't get it.
In my e-mail inbox today, I deleted more than 100 notices of comment to my OS front page article, when in fact I have only 25 legitimate comments.
I always add a choice PM to my deletions of this stuff, like, "Hey, flflflfazzzkjzz, your shoes are made by slave labor and your knock-off sportswear sucks." I've noticed a slight reduction, so somebody is checking back in some cases. Bots aren't able to do all the work. Cheers. Rated.
Help! I got spammed and I don't know how to delete them. As I have only been here on the site for 2 days now I hope someone can help me out! Thanks in advance!
