Dear Mr. President: I Don't Love You Anymore!

Rate: 13 Flag

Today I almost felt the need to apologize to a segment of the Tea Party. Almost! I know how it feels to be the victim of a government that doesn’t listen when you are hurting. But then, when I think about those in the Tea Party movement with the racist signs, the ones who parrot the sound bites of Fox Network, I have to reconsider, because I see the bigger problem. That bigger problem was never clearer than in the last week when I began to receive personal attacks on Facebook, from people I had friended as fellow “Democrats” united to defeat the effects of the Bush years. Those attacks were framed in a way that was very reminiscent of the Bush devotees who held on to their devotion when 70 % of the rest of the country had abandoned Bush. Suddenly, the same people who had joined me in the condemnation of this very bizarre behavior during the Bush years, were now telling me I must not criticize President Obama. Suddenly the same people who had religiously posted segments of Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow and quoted Thom Hartmann as an antidote to the Fox lies, now labeled them (and me) as the enemy!

The alarm bells went off in my head when I realized that these people were doing exactly what the Bushites had done. They translated my criticism of the president as a personal attack on them, giving them the green light to personally attack me. They responded to my criticisms with truths and half truths that were meant to distract from a conversation that was a real response to my specific complaint. Then came the sound bites from the White House, word for word. One Facebook attack used the word “Left” as if it represented the lowest form of life on earth. “Stop whining” sent chills down my spine as I remembered all the times in my life I have been told to stop acting like a girl and be a real man! Then came the references to Nancy Pelosi and San Francisco, which in my book are no different than the subtle anti-Semitic slurs about New York Jews! No, these specific references were not homophobic per se. Homophobia is the foundation that drives the acceptance of the generalization that everything from San Francisco is crazy and in some way un-American.

Here is what I refuse to accept, that I refused to accept during the Bush years and I will refuse to accept in the future. I will not drink the Kool-Aid. Truth is the bottom line for me. I cannot join some mass hypnotic trance in order to avoid the truth. The truth is Obama has reversed himself from his campaign promises time after time after time. The line he crossed in the last two weeks is one line too many for me. I will not accept responsibility for the broken political system that is destroying the United States. I will not pretend that we have a democracy when my vote counts for absolutely nothing, when we all know that money is the only important thing in America. I have the right to not participate in something I see as evil and destructive.

In the last month I have been involved, first hand, in the process of helping a very close friend, a 75 year old widow, keep her home from being sold in foreclosure. We stood together on the steps of San Francisco city hall to stop it in the last moments before her home of more than 40 years was about to be sold. In the weeks following I have been witness to the evil, immoral behavior of the bottom feeders, those who relish the thought of getting rich on other people’s suffering.

So I am done with the fancy hollow speeches of the President of the United States. I am done with all the devotees of Barack Obama who do not see that he is a changeling who is about to pass legislation with a majority of the Republican Party, using the excuse that the system he once denounced, requires it. He is the Great Enabler! I am done with politics that are bought and sold to the highest bidder! I am done with people who think critical thinking is arrogant! To those within the Democratic Party who use words like Liberal Base and Left with the same kind of disgust of the far right, I say this: Good luck in 2012 without us!

I was never enthusiastic about Obama -- I argued with his followers before the 2008 election and told them I thought he was a centrist, not a liberal. All that talk of change and hope. It was another slick ad campaign, the work of a snake oil salesman. And now it's all so obvious that there is no change and no hope. It's the same old crap. I think we need a new t-shirt: "We are all Liu Xiaobo." You and I and all of us who see through the Obama (and the tea bagger and GOP and Christian) hype, we are dissidents. ¡Que vivan los disidentes!
I too am now greatly disillusioned for perhaps the first time in my life, about my country, my president and my existence here in the US. I am trying to figure out if it was always like this and I just swallowed the propaganda or did not see it, or if really this is the system bared to us, once and for all. All the knowledge we possess these days that we did not 20 - 25 years ago, all the information about how things are truly done, were we just ignorant? I am truly distressed and disgusted.
I'm with YOU !!!!! My candidate was Hillary. I know she would have fought these SOBs. She's dealt with these sharks before and would have known how to pin them down. More than that, she KNOWS what true democratic principles are, like making the government work for the everyday man, and would have devoted herself in making it happen. Still, inspite of Obama's "present" votes in the Illinois congress, his dealings with Rezco and his praise of Reagan, of all people, during the campaign I had hope. I had hope that atleast he would be different. He lied, he hasn't even tried and the message of "change" has died. I don't know about you, but I want a Democratic Presidential Primary for 2012, if for nothing else, to show him to be a "democrat" is about principle, NOT a person.
“The Audacity of Arrogance!” To tell me or anyone else who has devoted their lives to peace and fairness; to tell us that if we do not give in to blackmail, all the unfairness and evil will be our fault, not the fault of those who benefit from it. Not the fault of the blackmailers!
I wish I could have the 300 bucks I sent his campaign in 2008. And a replacement for the shoe leather I wore out walking my town - not to mention the abuse I suffered in the process.

The President squandered the opportunity of a lifetime to set this country straight.
you're an idealist who sees through rose colored glasses. a nation receives the leadership it deserves. this one hasn't done better than obama in a long long time, and the forces against him are far greater than you recognize. SF's reputation as a "bubble" however remains intact. Don't let political reality dim your spirits.
I totally agree with you on everything. I never drank of the Obama Kool-Aid, but, I did vote for him because I didn't want John McCain!! I just hoped it would get better than the Bush years, but... I was wrong.. I'm hoping for, and supporting a real deomcrat to run against Obama in the 2012 primary. Until then... we just try and keep hope alive for us all..
I am also disappointed. Disappointed that we still have the same monetary policy and Federal Reserve Board Chairman that President Bush appointed. Disappointed that we still have that unconstitutional "Don't Ask-Don't Tell policy in our military. Disappointed that the equally unconstitutional "Office of Faith-based Initiatives" is still open for business. Disappointed that we are still mired in those pointless military fiascos in the Middle East. Mostly I am disappointed that so much of the American public seems content to continue to allow big corporations, big churches and the wealthy to drive them into powerlessness and unemployment. I am dissapointed that so many of my countrymen don't know what they believe nor bother to find out. Disappointed that so many feed their minds on an intellectual junk-food diet of team sports, so-called reality tv, slick preachers, and information from sources that call themselves news media when they are no more than advertisement peddlers using celebrity side-shows and shock photos to lure us into their tents. Our political leaders are no more than mirrors, held up to show us what we look like. We are the ones who must get serious and until we do the handful at the top of the power pyramid will highjack even the best people we send.
Welcome, welcome, welcome. The ranks of people ready for a new way forward are growing. It's mostly President Obama's fault. He conned people into thinking he was a liberal and not a corporatist and many thought he would be a good option so that the country could begin to reverse all the damage done by the Bush Administration. He was unable to keep the con going. We now know what his MO really happens to be. And, so we have a job to do.

We have to tell everyone else what we know, relentlessly. Let them call us unreasonable, petulant, sanctimonious, polemical, controversial, and any other word they come up with to discredit us. So long as we have evidence and proof to back up what we are saying, so long as we can point out a pattern of events that shows what we are saying to be true, we have no reason to shut up.

Anyone who tries to stop us deserves to be met with fierce challenge.

And now another meaningless crumb thrown out for cover, so they can say they got something in return. Crumbs, not substance!!
I was outraged too at first, but a piece in the LA Times today calmed me down a bit. Clinton pretty much did the same thing Obama's doing now - moving a little to the right, confronting the left. He's basically wooing the independents. I still hate it, but now I can see the strategy.
I'm with you, except that I never had any illusions in Obama (or, for that matter, in either of the Clintons, or any other Democrat). People who want real progressive change have got to learn that it is a total waste of time to support ANY Democrats, and a total crock to believe that change can be brought about through the electoral process.

Instead, we need to build a working-class-based mass movement, independent of BOTH of the capitalist parties, with the goal of confronting the plutocracy directly through mass action in the workplaces, schools, colleges, and communities. Only a mass party rooted directly in the working class can stand up to the money and resources that inevitably corrupt even the most "liberal" sounding Democrat.
John, I understand your reasoning, but cannot be taken in again. There is no such thing as a good strategy in a totally corrupt system!
Organian,

You are absolutely right! My illusions vanished even before the inauguration.
I have not just lost my love for Obama, I have lost my love for this country! I really don't feel like I belong here anymore. I hate to be a refugee at my age. I wish I had left long ago, instead of buying into the lame idea that "we can change it". This country went to the dogs long ago, and now I know it. I just wish I knew then, what I know now!
Thanks for this post! I've also been lambasted repeatedly from people I thought were my political allies because they somehow interpreted my criticisms of the president as personal attacks on them. Somehow it was MY fault that Obama had to keep buckling to the other side because I "didn't have his back".

Well I would LOVE to have his back, and whenever he's been on the right side of an issue I DO have his back. That doesn't mean I'm going to support him when he's wrong, and in this case he's deeply, deeply wrong.
Here’s how things work in the American Corporatocracy. Democracy is a system where the lowest number of votes wins if those votes support the bottom line profit, unless of course the highest number of votes supports the bottom line profit. Within the Corporatocracy, compassion is when compromise is made to benefit the bottom line profit. Within the Corporatocracy, truth is any idea that supports the bottom line profit! Within the Corporatocracy, justice is every ruling that supports the bottom line profit! Within the Corporatocracy everything is for sale!
That was so well said! And I agree with every word. I had many doubts about Obama, and never completely threw my heart and soul into him - and I knew it would be difficult and take a long time to unravel the atrocities of the BushCheney years, but I never expected such a horrific and utterly contemptible display as I've witnessed from Obama and am absolutely disgusted with him and every enabler in the so-called Democratic party. If they thought there was low voter turnout in 2010, they ain't seen nothin' yet - wait till 2012.
