CNN's Burning Q: "Are Whites Racially Oppressed?" - Part I

Rate: 1 Flag

An analysis in two parts

Part I

Some ills pervade society to such a spectacular degree eventually even the poobahs of liberal media have to acknowledge them. For once, Fox News is not alone in seizing the gauntlet.

Poor Whites

They marched on Washington to reclaim civil rights.

They complained of voter intimidation at the polls.

They called for ethnic studies programs to promote racial pride.

They are, some say, the new face of racial oppression in this nation -- and their faces are white.

Thus does CNN begin spinning its yarn about the harrowing struggle of my people, a struggle we've been waging lo these... 3 years ...

This fear has been compounded by the recent recession, which hit whites hard.

John Blake, author of this piece, trots out an onslaught of mind-boggling figures detailing just how acutely did my people feel the recession:

Poor Whites 2

Review the above carefully: Rush Limbaugh says Republicans (the article just implies the connection between Republicans and my people) are an "oppressed minority." Glenn Beck led a rally and called President Obama racist. Charles Gallagher, sociologist, talks about "this perception."

See? The recession hit whites hard.

As for exactly how my people experience this oppression, the old hat of affirmative action measures is trotted out. But that is not all:

Some white Americans not only feel ignored in higher education; they feel excluded by popular culture.

...American culture has become so multicultural that many of the nation's icons -- including celebrities, sports heroes, and other leaders -- are people of color.

Our culture is now so multicultural that many of its icons are of more than one racial/ethnic background. That redundant sentence was a sentence that said the same thing twice.

The article doesn't actually investigate the culture in any depth, leaving (the journalistic endeavor of) investigation to its readers, other than discussing the opinions of a few figures laden with talent, intelligence, charisma, but still toiling at the margins to overcome the gargantuan obstacles that face them as an oppressed race: Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh (don't give up the fight, boys).

I commence my investigation...

Top Movies at the Box Office As I Type This:

Tops Box

Our culture has become so misguidedly obsessed with multiculturalism that this man is the top draw at the box office:

Rango

Stars of the other top box office draws:

Matt Damon (white), Vanessa Hudgens (white), Mary-Kate Olsen (white), Neil Patrick Harris (black. I mean, white), Owen Wilson (white), Jason Sudeikis (white), Garden Gnomes (Shakespeare), Liam Neeson (white), Jennifer Aniston (white), Adam Sandler (white), Colin Firth (the last white Oscar-winner?), Geoffrey Rush (white), Alex Pettyfer (white), Timothy Olyphant (white), Justin Bieber (Canadian).

Artists of Billboard's Current Top Ten Songs and Albums:

Lady Gaga (white), Cee Lo Green (black), Rihanna (Barbadian), Pink (white), J-Lo (hispanic), Ke$ha (white), Katy Perry (white), Enrique Iglesias (Spanish), Bruno Mars (Filipino/Puerto-rican), Adele (white), Justin Bieber (white), Marsha Ambrosius (...British), Mumford and Sons (white), Dropkick Murphys (white), Aaron Lewis (white).

I'm a little tired doing all this investigating, I am starting to sympathize with the article's author John Blake. I'll let you investigate for yourself just how whitewashed caucasian faces have become from sports, television, stage, magazine covers, billboards, and other staples of our culture.

You might recall that the article began by saying of my people: "They complained of voter intimidation at the polls." It goes on to detail:

Conservative news outlets ran a number of stories last summer highlighting an incident from the 2008 elections, in which activists from the New Black Panther Party appeared to be intimidating voters at a polling place. Those claims were never proven.

The article does balance itself with the views of those who do not believe whites are oppressed.

Mona Charen, a conservative columnist for the National Review, challenges that view with this question: If more white Americans feel like an embattled minority, why did they elect President Barack Obama?

"Did they become racist after electing the first black president?" she asks.

Charen says the United States today is "incredibly tolerant and open."

Sure, she says, there are individuals who nurture racial animosity, but most Americans deserve praise for looking past race.

Thus the article emerges from the morass of right-wing delusion and finds a voice of reason. It is refreshing that some in the right-wing have their eyes open.

Oh...

Slate

Surprisingly the article fails to mention this, it wasn't exactly whites that pushed Obama into office. But, conservative commentator Mona Charen is still correct to observe that not all whites are hamstrung by this delusion of themselves as an oppressed people. As a good example of measured whites who clearly are not troubled, because they voted for a black person, conservative commentator Mona Charen points to all those people who voted for Barack Obama, "...most Americans deserve praise for looking past race."

We're lucky article author John Blake managed to find that insightful National Review columnist to explain to us that the United States today is "incredibly tolerant and open." I feel informed now.

We've moved beyond racial hatred.

Since the article is about the oppression of my people, information such as the above is not included. Also omitted from the article, because it would offer no useful perspective to the issue of the oppression of my people:

from the Ph.D. economists at the "liberal" Economic Policy Institute:

Blacks 2

from the (libertarian) CATO Institute:

CATO

and, for good measure, from hivandhepititis.com:

HIV

Not a peep of any of the above facts in this article.
