Leonard Cohen: Democracy Is Coming to The USA

Rate: 31 Flag

On Friday I went to the concert of a lifetime:  Leonard Cohen.  He is 75 years old and performed for three and half hours.  A lifetime of songwriting and performing.  No pyrotechnics, no splash, just a bunch of incredible musicians and a man's body of work.

Still sensual as ever.  Still that voice that goes to my gut and soul.  Still filled with energy and pathos.

If I have a musical soundtrack in my head through my life, it would be Cohen and Theodorakis.  The music represents about four decades of moods, thoughts, emotions, experiences, politics and tunes.   But, it's the damn words:

They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

Gus Sanchez wrote an incredible post about the concert.  I could never even start to do it justice:   "Here I Stand, I'm Your Man." Leonard Cohen Live, 11/1/09.

Cohen is another Canadian gift to the world.

He ended his concert with this song, it's new.
"Democracy is Coming to the USA"

If you want a lover
Ill do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
Ill wear a mask for you
If you want a partner
Take my hand
Or if you want to strike me down in anger
Here I stand
Im your man

If you want a boxer
I will step into the ring for you
And if you want a doctor
Ill examine every inch of you
If you want a driver
Climb inside
Or if you want to take me for a ride
You know you can

Im your man

Where are the men who make such offers?  Only in  Leonard Cohen songs.

I love Leonard Cohen. So amazing that he's performing this year. It reminds me of how fortunate I was to see Ella Fitzgerald and James Brown when they were old and still killing me. A 70+ year old woman was singing "I've Got A Crush On You." And she was singing just to me.
Thank you for the link. I saw him two weeks ago and tried to post but didn't think I could do him justice. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity the enjoy a rare artist who gives everything with every performance. Bravo!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this here, thx also for providing the other link. Did he sing "Dance Me" too?
You get smarter when you listen to Leonard Cohen.
jim, where did you see him? He said the San Jose concert was the last of the tour.

Ken, I made sure to go see him cause I regret not seeing some of the other greats. What I loved was the image of him as an older man and his voice, with that wonderful patina.
Rolling, yes he sang Dance Me.

Lefty, that is so true. He read a few of his songs as poetry, that was just absolutely incredible.
Oh Stellaa, thank you for this! I saw him in the Museum of Modern Art in Dublin last year - a special birthday present from my husband! A friend came over from New York to be with us and then went on to see him in Berlin (Hamburg? not sure!) afterwards. The Heavens opened about five minutes before he came on stage but he gave us three encores and came out the last time, skipping in a little Irish dance - at seventy-three years old! The man's a legend and while I regret that he MUST tour because of his financial troubles I am delighted I got the chance to see him live.
~smiling and nodding and jealousing of course~
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Huge crush here in Iowa for this guy. Huge huge huge crush.

So glad you went, Stellaa. So glad. Sounds like it was beyond words.

(Did I mention I have a crush on him?)
The Rosemont Theater near Chicago. Nov. 4. We got tix ages ago so it was part of his scheduled tour.
New? I have Cohen CDs from back in the 90s that have Democracy on them. Or are you being sarcastic Stellaa?
You lucky Dawg!! I love him! One of a kind, for sure. His words are haunting and true.
BBE, I was wrong then. Imagine that, I was wrong. It felt new.

@psychomama, Dublin and Cohen, what a day.

@JK, you Canadians, so smug.
@Waking, I share your crush.
I thought you were making a sly political point.
Stellaa, we still have to live with the shame of Celine and Terry Jack's "Seasons in the Sun." ~sigh, just shoot me now~
Well, that is how you take over the world, Joni Mitchel and Leonard take one side of the world, then the Celine takes the other. I know world domination techniques when I see them. We waste our wad on invasions and weaponry and you create musical talent.
*damn, whispers to self* that stellaa is so smart; she's figured us out; must plot new strategy.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm, mmmmmmmmmmm, mmmmmmmmmmm, and yummmmmmmmmm for good measure. Would loooooove to see him live. (sigh)
I would add the Tragically Hip and Neil Young to the plus side of the Canadian music roster. And Kathleen Edwards. Lord, I love Kathleen Edwards.

And Sloan. And Ron Sexsmith. Dang. You guys are good.
Frank, you are most right.
I saw the show last fall. It was the show of a lifetime. Pretty much everyone I know who saw it agreed. What a thrill! BTW, the live album is great, too.
*The Band* I always wonder how many Americans realize they are Canadian save for Levon Helms.

~take a load off fanny, take a load for free...~
Right, General Brady. How ironic that the greatest "Americana" music was played by the Band?
You are lucky as hell. I hope you enjoyed it to the utmost!
We are not worthy, General.

(Where is that Namaste self of yours today? A bit of aggression, we are dominated, we give up)
Frank, two words..."American Woman"

Oops, sorry stellaa, I am still packing aggression from the Pirate Wimmen smackdown. I'll go chant for a couple of hours and light the sandlewood incense.

Om om om ;)
Heck, I love that side of you. Please don't change.
Let's resurrect this as an anthem for today!

I was once on a 19-hour flight to New Zealand and one of the options was a Leonard Cohen documentary. I watched it over and over throughout the flight. He is amazing, and a voice I remember first from "Suzanne ..."
Okay, I admit it, I took the song "Suzanne" personally.

I feel the only envy I have felt all year Stellaaa.
xox I'm probably his biggest fan in these parts...xox
I deeply regret that I may never get to see LC perform.
God I love Cohen. I got turned onto Cohen by a crazy little Jewish performance poet in Columbus, Ohio. He didnt' have a clue what he was listening to but I will always be grateful to the crazy little bastard for giving me my first taste of Cohen.

Stellaa, no matter how much I pay for therapy, apparently change is NOT in my programming. ~sigh~ You are stuck with me.

I just found out in the hottub, that my husband booked The Band to play at his high school. Apparently, they got much better after that.

He also tried to book Joni, but the principal didn't think they could sell that many tickets at $6. Pffft. Regrets, he's had a few...
Very nice. Very, very nice. Thank for posting this!
Gotta admire a man who can even stand up for three hours onstage -- at any age. I'm sorry, tho, but I've never been a fan, tho' I understand why so many are. He's a helluva poet, a lot better than Dylan the deliberately obtuse for my money. But poetry doesn't always translate well into a song. Still, we are in desperate need of meaningful lyrics in this age of saccharine sap and hostile hip-hop.
I envy your going to the concert. I love Leonard Cohen. Thanks so much for posting the video. Right now I am listening to Famous Blue Raincoat, Jennifer Warnes sings Leonard Cohen. Warner Cohen resembles Baez Dylan. It is a great album.
Thanks for your lovely comment regarding my post. I'm bummed he closed your show with that song.

Great post. Glad you were able to relish in this rare opportunity.
Sighhhhh.....::shivery shivers::....yummmmm....

I've been crushing on this man for quite a while now. I just wish I could have appreciated him when I was younger so I could have crushed that much more. Good lord, he's sexy!!!

Rrrrrrrrated!
he kicked off his tour in here in Austin. sold out in mins so they added a second show. I went both days. he is amazing. going to my ipod now to drown in his voice!
I just happened across this -- as one who is famously susceptible to the charm of older men of style and wisdom , I absolutely love Leonard Cohen. How right you are about this: "Where are the men who make such offers? Only in Leonard Cohen songs." Thank you so much for this great post. And you love Theodorakis? No wonder you are my newest favorite!
