Departures

Rate: 0 Flag
Departures are always the same. There is one wave that is the first and the last wave you notice, the first gentle life and fall of the dark hull under your feet. And the world falls away from you quite suddenly and softly, like a word you have spoken. Whatever your reasons for getting out, a lightness and loneliness gather under your heart. All about you gather the distances; the remoteness of the stars is only there to remind you of the unsoundable depths touched by the narrow keel, and every morning opens around you the perpetual horizon.

Robert Finley, "The Accidental Indies", McGill UP, 2000

I know this quote is about riding a ship, but,for me it captures the essence of leaving at any time. Everytime I have left or gone on a trip the feelings of "lightness and loneliness gather under [my] heart". It really is a wonderful feeling. Maybe that is where the addiction to traveling comes for me. It is such a bittersweet feeling to leave a place; you are happy to leave, but still feel attached.

My thoughts are it would be enlightening to know where you have travelled and why. Still, I agree there is both sadness and pleasure when leaving somewhere. I tend to think it's because we leave part of who we are when we travel--and that's not a bad thing. We create memories that we pack in our soul but the actual departure from where those memories were formed leave us wistful.
