Cliburn Competition Announces Six Finalists

Rate: 12 Flag

Finalists

For the past five days, I've been in Fort Worth, Texas, attending the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The musicians are extraordinary. The semi-finals ended yesterday. Six finalists were announced today. They are (in photographic order):

  1. Yeol Eum Son, 23 (South Korea)
  2. Haochen Zhang, 19 (China)
  3. Mariangela Vacatello, 27 (Italy)
  4. Nobuyuki Tsujii, 20 (Japan)
  5. Di Wu, 24 (China)
  6. Evgeni Bozhanove, 25 (Bulgaria)

The competition can be viewed live (and free) at http://www.cliburn.tv/

Now that I'm back in Oklahoma City, I've been following the competition by Webcast, and I'm amazed at the quality. In some ways, the experience is better than live. The cameras are capturing not only the actual performances, but the rehearsals with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

The orchestral rehearsals began today. If you've never eavesdropped on a young pianist rehearsing with an orchestra under the direction of an outstanding conductor (in this case, Maestro James Conlon), visit the Cliburn Web Site tomorrow. The camera will take you up close, allowing you to join the orchestra as it learns from Maestro Conlon's insightful comments. It's all live from Bass Hall.

I'll end this post with a performance of four etudes by Chopin, played by Nobuyuki Tsujii during the preliminary phase of the competition. Please note: Nobuyuki is blind. His recent performances have led many to redefine artistic genius. If you have time for only one Cliburn concert this week, watch Nobuyuki's upcoming performance of Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto on Saturday, June 6, at 3:45 CST (http://www.cliburn.tv/).

I apologize for being such a bad OSer lately. I’ve been out of town for two weeks and away from my computer. I’ll try to catch up with my reading in the weeks ahead.
No apologies needed! Terrific post...
And a nicely nuanced performance.

Piano isn't my thing (woodwinds and strings are more to my taste), but this is enjoyable.
Steve - thanks for this. Been in the back of my mind since you talked about it last. I will listen to them all.

I love the Rach so will tune in for that. My favorite is Evgeny Kissin's Rach #3.
So good to read you again! Rachmaninoff is one of my favorites, I´ll try to watch the concert; thanks for the information!
Don't forget the Japanese Gardens!
WOW! Just. WoW. That performance is brilliant.
Great having you back, Steve!
Gads, thank you...!! You can be as bad as you want, as long as we get such treasures.
What did I tell you about those Asian competitors. Shouldn't they have some kind of handicap? Like they have to wear thimbles or something, just to make it fair.

That's kid's definitely going somewhere.

And now I'm going to feel extremely gauche posting my So You Think You Can Dance re-caps.

However, I did visit the site once with my son, and it was enough to discourage him from quitting piano...at least for next year. So thanks for this.
Incredible. I listened to it thrice - so amazing!
This is so wonderful. What a revealing post of your love of music! It's so pure and lovely (the post, the music). I'm going to listen for a while. (Why did I refuse to continue piano lessons?? Big regret.)
I read about Tsujii last week. The writer was as blown away by the 10 minute standing ovation as he was by the music. I can't imagine how wonderful it must have been for you to be right there!!! Welcome home ~ you've been missed!!!
Why apologize? Classical Piano > OS. IMHO. :)
Amazing. The third etude was my favorite. So tender. I hope this young man (and all the finalists) are well provided for by their talents. Thanks for sharing this with us Steve!
I was just listening to Val Cliburn tonight! Great post!
