Chinese and Japanese Pianists Win Gold Medals at Cliburn

Rate: 10 Flag

After seventeen grueling days of competition, the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition ended today. Two Gold Medals were awarded: one to Haochen Zhang (China, age 19), the youngest competitor, and the other to Nobuyuki Tsujii (Japan, age 20), the first blind pianist ever to win a major piano competition.

Here are excerpts of their performances:

Haochen Zhang

Those two are exceptionally talented. All of the winners seem soooooo young. But we are lucky to have that kind of emerging talent. Liszt is not my favorite, but they do it well.
19 and 20 years old! Amazing; how much talent and dedication. A pleasure to listen.
Kisses.
Two gold! Is that common?
It's happened only once before in the Cliburn, Shags.
19 and 20 are not all that young. If you consider that most pianists at this level of competition start at 3, 4, or 5, and are usually put through vigorous practicing schedules by the finest teachers, 19 and 20 are about right.

Interesting results. Thanks for the link.
Congrats to both! What amazing talent!!!
oh god, this is the best. thank you for sharing. i'm so proud of these two terrifically talented young people. (please note the alliteration) i love piano. did the high school and college very emotional but not very good playing. my speakers must love this too because they are okay and not carpy/crapy today. love love love and so much gratitude.
My god. These videos are mind-blowing. One of the best parts of today. By the time you're done listening to these pieces, you want to throw your desk upside down. Shew. Both picked Liszt, huh?

The smile on Nobuyuki face at the end makes my heart melt.

And your comment on my post made me fall out of my chair.

Thanks....hey, you kinda made my day!
Amazing! It was truly an incredible experience for me to hear Van Cliburn live at Grant Park. I'd love to hear these young men in concert too. Wonderful.
Thanks for once again bringing us classical treasures. Enjoyed, and rated.
Sorry to get here late, just having a catch up on my OS favourites. Thank you so much for sharing these clips- just enthralling.
Oh to have talent. Even a modicum of some sort of talent would be wonderful. But hell no! I'm stuck in this zero talent world of mine with no escape. Where's my gun anyway?

Great post Steve
