Scenes We'd Like to See #2

Rate: 0 Flag

After three and a half seasons, I want to see someone get lost on Lost. I mean, seriously – they’re stranded on a huge  tropical island which is nothing but beach and untracked jungle – with occasional hatches, compounds  and clearings for home-made golf courses. Anyone who has ever strayed off a hiking path knows how easy it is to completely lose your bearings and wander in circles until you die. People get lost in the moors on Nantucket all the time – on dirt roads in the middle of a tiny island. But on Lost people routinely say stuff like “I’m heading back to the beach” or “I’m going to find Henry Gale’s balloon with this kindergarten-level map” or  “I’m going off in the middle of the night to find the four-by-four tab of metal sticking out of the ground that I stumbled on last week.” Which would be fine if it was all infantile urban hubris and they trekked off never to be found again. We never see anyone say stuff like “Wait a second. We passed this exact rock formation two hours ago!” Several of the characters are presented as experienced wilderness types with advanced tracking skills (What are the chances of that on the average plane flight?), but they seem only marginally more comfortable striding through wilderness than everyone else. Okay, I understand it would be boring to have the whole cast stumbling around the rain forest shouting each other’s names and getting eaten by wild boars. But couldn’t someone at least blaze a tree? Leave a trail of breadcrumbs, anything? I’d feel much more at home.
