Sheriff Joe's "Mug shot contest"

Rate: 16 Flag

Questionable publicity stunt?

arpaio2

Last October, I posted an article about Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s VOTER FRAUD PREVENTION VOLUNTEERS, a sheriff department sponsored program to suppress Latino voter turnout by stationing “racial profilers” at each voting center.

In that post, I also mentioned Sheriff Joe’s “Prisoner Humiliation Program.”  In that program, he forces county jail inmates to wear pink underwear in order to reduce their self-esteem to its lowest human level.

Now, Sheriff Joe is trying out a new online program he calls his Mug Shot of the Day Contest.”  This is apparently an attempt to extend his “Prisoner Humiliation Program” to those who are initially being booked into his county jail.

The practice of publishing the mug shots of arrested suspects on a publicly accessible website is morally, ethically, and legally questionable, because there is an implicit declaration of guilt by the arresting organization.  By making a mockery of the online pictures, Sheriff Joe is taking this to an even higher level of questionable legality.

What Joe fails to realize is that, at the time that the mug shot is taken, the photographed person is not guilty of anything.  The concept of “Innocent until proven guilty” should be reinforced not denigrated by our local sheriff department..

Personally, I hope that one of the “Mug Shot” contestants will come back and sue Sheriff Joe Arpaio for $Millions after he/she is acquitted.

Steven, this man is out of control. But then, the right-wing is out of control...
Whether or not this dork is "right wing" is beside the point. He is flat out mentally unstable and needs psychiatric treatment. Anyone who sees fit to humiliate other humans is not fit for any kind of public service job. The unfortunate thing is that, if he gets sued, it will be the taxpayers who get the bill - not him.

How do sick people like him get into positions to do such harm to others?

.
skypixie is right, this guy is sick. That his is an elected position is equally troubling.
I saw him interviewed about this. There's nothing about this that breaks the law but it's nice you're so worried about it. The people voting on the best mug shot are lovin' it.
I can't believe that is going on! I thought that even prisoners had rights....I would think that the demoralization would produce some very negative results in the form of revenge.....

He also had an American Idol style contest in the fall, and the best singer one a real thanksgiving meal. Arpaio was sued- and they won- by some friends of mine here for abuses of power. I think the mugshot stuff and the pink underwear are just his publicity stunts to keep it interesting for the people who elect him. It detracts them from the millions of dollars he has spent, using a parallel accounting service, or the millions that have been spent of taxpayer money prosecuting his office for his real abuses of people. Pink underwear is annoying, arresting people for no reason at all is illegal.
Steven, as with all power hungry crooks, his time will come. They are already investigating him for having prisoners work for him and his friends for free. I can't wait to see him in pink underwear, hah!
This is an authoritarian humiliation method that is supposed to scare people into submitting blindly to authority but they don't do it in a manner that has any chance of working. this is just as well since if they did do it in a successful manner it would be like it was in the 1930's in Germany or when the inquisition was at its height where they did implement these tactics in a successful manner for a while.

It is tempting to wish for one more Mug Shot of the Day, Arpaio's.

Tempting and I'm sure he did plenty to deserve it but it wouldn't work.
Have they tried to recall this guy yet? R
Yup. He's a cop alright. Every cop that ever existed knows for absolute sure that "if a cop arrested you - you're guilty". Are there no "cruel and unusual punishment" federal or state laws being badly bent here?

This muttonhead is ELECTED?!?!?! HOLY SHIT!! How much of that county is occupied by his relatives, anyway? That is as un-sane a situation as I've ever heard of. Elected????!!!! Mind blowing!

.
Living in Maricopa County, one is assaulted on an almost daily basis by this goon's stunts. We can only hope that he will finally be brought down by the latest investigation of his financial gymnastics -- he's been pretty Teflon-y so far.
there might be 50% of america that thinks anyone arrested by the police is guilty, or it might be more.

certainly not less, because this is an election ploy by a sociopath with a badge.

you can sneer at sheriff joe if it makes you feel better, but what he says about america should scare the progressive shit out of you.
