Bush ignored the warnings.

“Bin Ladin Determined to Strike in US”

Bush at Crawford briefing

Lest we forget

Ten years ago this weekend President George W. Bush received his daily briefing while vacationing at his Crawford, Texas ranch.  The report was entitled: “Bin Ladin Determined to Strike in US.”

Think of how different the world would be today if Bush would have understood the true threat-level of that report and if he had taken immediate action to thwart al Qaeda’s planned attack.

According to this summary, provided by SourceWatch.org, the highlights of the briefing included:

·         An intelligence report received in May 2001 indicating that al Qaeda was trying to send operatives to the United States through Canada to carry out an attack using explosives. That information had been passed on to intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
·         An allegation that al Qaeda had been considering ways to hijack American planes to win the release of operatives who had been arrested in 1998 and 1999.
·         An allegation that bin Laden was set on striking the United States as early as 1997 and through early 2001.
·         Intelligence suggesting that suspected al Qaeda operatives were traveling to and from the United States, were U.S. citizens, and may have had a support network in the country.
·         A report that at least 70 FBI investigations were under way in 2001 regarding possible al Qaeda cells/terrorist-related operations in the United States.

Should this report have set off alarms?

Much of Bush’s lack of focus on the al Qaeda threat stemmed from his apparent desire to downplay (or ignore) the actions taken by his predecessor, President Clinton.  Richard Clarke, Clinton’s counterterrorism coordinator, sent a strategy letter to Condoleezza Rice on January 25, 2001, just days after Bush’s inauguration.  In that letter, Clarke stated,    “We urgently (Clarke’s emphasis) need a Principals level review on the al Qida (sic) Network.”

It is still not clear what actions Rice took (if any) in response to that letter.  However, we do know that Richard Clarke was subsequently demoted.

In May of 2001 President Bush introduced a new Terrorism Task Force to be headed by Vice President Dick Cheney.  On September 10th (one day before the World Trade Center fell) it was reported that Cheney was “finally beginning to hire staff” for that task force.

The day after Bush received the al Qaeda briefing he spoke with reporters while playing golf near his ranch.  According to the Washington Post::

“Bush seemed carefree as he spoke about the books he was reading, the work he was doing on his nearby ranch, his love of hot-weather jogging, his golf game and his 55th birthday...

Bush spent most of August 2001 on his ranch here. His staff said at the time that by far the biggest issue on his agenda was his decision on federal funding of stem cell research, followed by education, immigration and the Social Security ‘lockbox’."

Many people will always wonder why "stopping terrorism" didn’t top that list.

I knew Bush was unqualified to be president. This confirms it. Rated!
And I remember just before 9/11 that Mexican President Vincente Fox left the US early because of "security concerns." One certainly wonders what was going on in the little pea brain of W back then.
As the days before 9/11 approached, bush the lesser's poll numbers were plunging -- america was becoming aware that they (thought they) had elected an idiot to lead the country (actually, they hadn't elected anyone, as all who are savvy knows the Florida election was worthy of a banana republic - the fix was in, there; phony felony lists outsourced to a Texas firm, Secretary of State of Florida, also co-chair of the bush for president campaign, inadequate numbers of machines in minority districts {with a history of democratic voting patterns from years past}, causing waiting lines of six hours or longer, literally disenfranchising thousands of would-be Gore voters; a bush cousin, the first to call Florida for bush on national television, while the polls were still open, Jim Baker's coup of flying down repugnican't operatives from D.C. to stage a phony "citizens' spontaneous" demonstration to stop the recount demonstration; and the Supreme court comprised by a significant number of poppie dominated appointees, ruling, awarding the presidency to bush, and so much more.

bush the lesser was NEVER elected; he was (S)ELECTED, and, twice no less. Knowing they could never get away with what they did in Florida two times in a row, Ohio was chosen as the ideal place similar shenanigans would play out in Ohio four years later; this time with the CEO of the dominant voting Diebold machines used, there promising to "deliver Ohio."

bush the lesser was never ELECTED president

Anyway, sorry to stray afield, Robert, but plans for Iraq were laid out by Cheney from day one. Cheney had been appointed to explore who would be the best qualified to run with buh the lesser and arrived at the conclusion that it was, he, indeed the most qualified.

So to get back on point, if 9/11 was not an inside job, as many conclude, and there is a ton of evidence to point in that direction, (the least of which was the phony 9/11 investigation), it was allowed to happen to provide the pretext to carry out the invasion of Iraq, which Cheney had laid out from the earliest days of the administration and to save a dying presidency.

Yes,they were more than willing to sacrifice 3,000 american lives to serve their agenda. A key question, why was NORAD trained to respond to any suspicious flight activity within eighteen minutes ordered to stand down that day?

This is a great and important post, especially in light of america being flushed down the toilet, now, as obama continues the job of wrecking america irreparably. I needn't redundantly quote that he who doesn't follow the lessons of history . . .

This whole story is fishy; there IS something rotten in Denmark.

This is a VERY important story and I thank You, Steven, for bringing the issue up.

Ignoring the issue was never Bush's problem. His problem, and thus that of all Americans, was his total ignorance of what he was supposed to be doing as leader of the American dream.
His lethargic mental capacities, or better said, lack of any mental capacities, dropped us all into a nightmare which will take decades to awaken from.
His policies helped to split America so wide, and so deep, it is impossible to imagine them ever coming together again, for the benefit of the people or the nation.

Despite the likelihood of being tagged a crazy conspiracy crackpot, complete with tin-foil helmet and claiming to get messages from aliens, I totally agree that Bush engaged in willful ignorance on September 11, 2001, to create a pretext for war.

And, yes, he was never elected President.

USA! USA! USA! USA!
This is pretty well known that both the Minneapolis and Arizona FBI offices were trying to get warrants to search the apartments of numerous "flight students" wanting limited lessons in flying and landing only. The flight instructors called the FBI to say we have a bunch of foreigners at our school who don't want to learn how to take off.

August 20-September 11, 2001: FBI’s Radical Fundamentalist Unit Unhelpful with Moussaoui Search Warrant
The FBI Minneapolis field office wishes to search Zacarias Moussaoui’s belongings, which will later be found to contain enough information to potentially stop 9/11 (see August 16, 2001). To do so it must get the approval of the Radical Fundamentalist Unit (RFU) at FBI headquarters. However, the RFU throws obstacles in the warrant request’s path:
RFU chief Dave Frasca stops the Minneapolis office from pursuing a criminal warrant (see August 21, 2001);

Three weeks before 9/11 and our own bureaucratic system dropped the ball.... and what has changed since?
Old news, but good knowing that we have people who remember, people working to remind us of our worst government ever; good comments.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to respond earlier. My internet connection was down all day.

I must admit, there have been some very good comments on this post. Obviously, you all are aware of the historic significance of W's "lapse in response" to the terrorist threats that were ringing out in early 2001.

Janus, you are right that this is "old news", but that is precisely the point. It should never be considered "old news." We should nationally recognize 8/6/01 as much as we will always recognize 9/11/01. This date should go down in history as being "National Ignorance Day."

We need to learn from our mistakes.
Still shaking my head over this one. I mean, how can a president read a PDB with a title like that and then go play golf or cut brush???? I doubt the other 42 presidents would have just sat on their fannies in Texas.

I like to think it was incompetence rather than a calculated and very cynical manipulation of events to panic the nation and thus give Bush his causus bellli against Iraq. Which we knew happened. Since I wouldn't put much past Cheney, the cynical manipulation of events, alas, doesn't seem too far fetched to be true although I don't necessarily assume that was the case. I don't consider myself a conspiracy theorist, but there ARE questions about that day that have never been satisfactorily answered. The events of 9/11 were awful enough. The choke-hold on the nation Bush got because of public fear for the next several years did even MORE harm.

Bush wacked we are. The real war criminals are still at large right here at home sour home.
neither the post nor the comments ask the question:

"is this any way to run a a nation of 300 million in the 21st century?

americans watch their nation be managed, for they are disenfranchised from the management of their affairs. so comments on the relative suitability or success of their masters is the limit of their interest or ability.

i suspect no president would make a difference to 9/11, the society does not generate effective people because the struggle for power weeds out all but those lusting after power.
Probably would have foiled the plot and there wouldn't have been a 9/11 and he would have been impeached for covering up connections to illegal activities involving his pal "Kenny Boy" Lay, his biggest political contributor and CEO of Enron (whom W. denied knowing - saying that he took pictures with him and shook his hand like he does with countless others...)
Give every man his own death.
