Recall Pearce

Never in the history of this state has a member of the state legislature been successfully removed from office through a recall election.  The President of the Arizona State Senate, Russell Pearce, now holds that great distinction.  As I said in May, “It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.”

Russell Pearce, you may recall, was the sponsor of Arizona’s “Paper’s Please Law” (SB 1070), Arizona’s “Anchor Baby Bill” and numerous other discriminatory legislation.  Before entering state office, he was Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s right-hand man, where he helped initiate Arpaio’s “Prisoner Humiliation Program.”  He is also known for his close affiliation with an Arizona white supremacy group.

Russell Pearce pulled in over four times the campaign financing (mostly from anonymous out-of-state sources) than the winner, Jerry Lewis, who relied on local grass-roots support.  Lewis, the superintendent of a charter school program in Mesa, is a well respected moderate Republican leader in his conservative 18th district – certainly a far cry from the radical right-wing politician they had representing them previously.

This should send a strong message to Governor Jan Brewer who, in many ways, has been acting in a subordinate capacity to Pearce in this state.  She has basically rubber-stamped all of Pearce’s key initiatives.

A Gov. Brewer recall effort was initiated earlier this year but failed to receive the signatures needed by May 31 to have this on the November ballot.  However, with the latest news concerning Pearce's ouster, plus the extreme local dissatisfaction with Brewer's firing of the director of the independent election commission, there will most certainly be a resurgent recall effort.  In addition, there are now local and national calls for her impeachment.

Pay attention Jan – You’re next!

A bit of a setback for the fascists last night in a lot of places. Good riddance.
MAZAL TOV TO THE PEOPLE OF ARIZONA. r.
Some good news today. Hopefully the goddam tide is turning.
He looked so surprised, too. He just couldn't believe it was happening.

A few more reversals and I'll be willing to travel to Arizona again.
A great, great day for Arizona. It was so gratifying seeing every one of his dirty tricks blow up in face. Finally, Arizona voters seem to be waking up and smelling the filth.
Steven, thanks for the great report on this welcome news and I am thinking the proverbial door will hit him on the way out!
more good journalism! keep it up! you rock!
Thank God some sense is showing in the American voter!!!!!
This article makes me glad I logged in today!
Best news of a great day!
As a long time ex-Arizonan this was Very, VERY good news to wake up to this morning! Last night I say a article that said Pearce almost lost so I took a little solace in that BUT when I saw the news this morning that he lost well.... YEAH!! :-)
Yahweh is pleased.
As I commented elsewhere, even tho I had no dog in the AZ hunt, I was truly pleased to see Pearce take it his more than ample ass. But I hope that's not the end of it -- he ought to go to one of those privatized prisons he's legislated for on their -- and his -- behalf
How the hell did this lulu get elected? Well, at least now he's out!
For you, Steve, the curse would be not so much may you live in interesting times, but in interesting places. And now, [pause] for a moment of relieve, but, I fear, nothing but a moment.
Yep Steve, it may be a short-lived triumph – but a great triumph nonetheless.
My husband helped in the recall campaign for Pearce and I'm sure would LOVE to do the same for Brewer! They're both despicable people who vilify those in poverty, especially those with the wrong skin tone or accent.
I would love to be in a state like that. Go, Arizona!
