Bio
In my avatar pic I am holding someone's pet skunk somewhere in Oklahoma when I was four. I guess I have always been an accepting type of girl. • It is all about trying. Sometimes laughter is the only medicine. I am often, as I like to say, creatively confused. Although I am what some would describe as accomplished, I want to be a better being. I love as I try. • My work posted here is of course copyright Natalie K. Munden. • Oh, and did you know that some people take drugs in order to experience vertigo ON PURPOSE?

Rescuing the Republic

Rate: 14 Flag

I just read Kirk Nielsen’s article, Can We Rescue the Republic Before the Dark Politics Take Over? which Matt Paust, a.k.a. ClarkK, linked in his recent Tribe post. Very interesting take on an assortment of woes.

The portion of the article about polarization in the U.S. seemed especially on target. I know people who do not talk to others who watch the wrong news channel. What?! Are you kidding me? I say, “Read news from several sources and watch or listen to as many news and commentary shows as you can, so you have a better chance of knowing what is going on.”

Just to pick one topic out of many raised in Nielsen’s article, I have said more than once that reality shows and offerings like The Jerry Springer Show make me think of the time just before the fall of Rome. Then there is the game little kids play in which they spin and spin wildly until they fall down. At first it is funny, but as kids get bigger it starts to hurt.

It appears that some segments of American society are wildly yelling and spinning, learning nothing. They fall down and it hurts, but they do not seem to be choosing to do something better.

I do not want to see the U.S. crumble, as some are gleefully predicting while they have nowhere else to go that does not have its own reasons for complaint. To me, right now there is too way much emphasis on deciding who to blame instead of on solving problems.

This week I wrote to my Congressman that I hoped he would write back and tell me that President Obama is calling to the service of not only the country, but the planet, the greatest problem-solving, scientific minds in the world to put a stop to the gushing oil first, and then overcome the overwhelming mess. If we can go to the moon, clone animals and build pyramids that stand the test of eons, humans can solve the crisis in the Gulf. Then the inevitable blaming and lawsuits can begin.

America is not perfect, yet people float on watercraft the size of postage stamps to get here.

          I believe. I must.

OH yeah! Our strength as a country is our ability to adapt. No matter how bad our politicians are, we will survive! R-
Very well said, indeed Natalie.
Obama needs to start multitasking on his job. Yes we have a serious problem in the Gulf region. Where now there are many jobs gone because of the disaster. Obama needs to get back to congress and be the hardass President and get the unemployment extention back to those who need it! I have done emailed my congressmen in my state and even emailed Barack Obama in this matter. I will be shocked out of my skin if he actually read or had one of his flunky staff members read my email. Till then, I will press on and carry on until I get evicted from my apartment
This is short but so powerful! I love your sentiments and that you have such fierce hope. Right there with you.
the problem is, you are in the same position as a british subject was in 1789: you can approach your master, cap in hand, and beg for action, but no more. if obama and dubya can seem so different, out of power, and so similar when in power, begging for action is futile.

america needs democracy, but will not get it. sauve qui peut.
Dave: Is that Can-Do spirit a myth? I think not in many.

Trilogy: Thanks for stopping by and for the nice comment!
Where I live 95 of the people watch one television news station, its in every doctors office, every public place. And accepted as gospel.
We are in a situation that cannot continue. Americans are going to have to settle for less and the lifestyle will have to change and quickly. I hope but the people with all the money now do not care about the average family or person. We once were the leaders in almost everything but greed for the now has been dominant for too long. The Neo Cons will never relent until they get what they want--war and mind control.
Great piece! Rated .... especially for: "I know people who do not talk to others who watch the wrong news channel."

I too have friends like that, ones I never tell that I sometimes watch FoxNews(mostly in the morning, cause well, then, it's mostly news!! :) )
Love the next to the last paragraph. Amen to that.
Thanks a bunch, Natalie. Well said.
heysuz: Multitasking is essential, but delegating even more so. No one person can do every thing, but he can lead.

JustCathy: I'm happy you feel this way.

alloomis: I would like to think things are a bit different. We can always vote out our leaders. As long as the U.S. doesn't mess with the Bill of Rights, we'll be okay.
Bernadine: I know. You can always change the channel to something that seems less one-sided. Most people are too shy to argue, really. :-)

Spud: I was talking mostly about the oil disaster, but I hear your frustration. I would like to see more people with open minds, but that is sometimes a hard sell.
Looks like the energizer bunny is back with her passion. I hope your message will fire up more Americans to do the same. Very well said.
Rated.
Let's Talk: :-) Thanks for the read and the comment!

Tink: I even watch the 700 Club now and then, just to hear how issues are chewed on at that venue, which has a lot of viewers.

Pilgrim: Thank you, friend.

ClarkK: :-)

Fusan: I think you are the Energizer Bunny of Sweetness!
Well said. I think Clarkk would be proud to have put you on the journey.
Brown Eyed Girl: Thanks. I sent nearly the name words in a PM to Clark. He encouraged me to post my thoughts.
Optimism about the rather elusive ideals held by the country seems not to be functional. A rather furious pessimism is called for to stop this slow steady stride to jump off the final cliff into the chaotic chasm of total non-functionality. The financial sector and the corporations are grinding the country into dust.
