Back to the Unemployment Line

Rate: 15 Flag

The big, big company reorganized my job out from under me today.  My former department was going one way and that way didn't include the work I did for them.  Instead they want to hire someone who can do the work that the department will be doing and they want that someone working at company HQ.  Which is far from where I am.

I'm alright with this.  And will continue to be until the severance pay runs out.  I could see this day coming soon after the reorganization was announced about a month ago.  Almost immediately, my workload dropped off to near nothing.  This is what working for a big, big company means.  They're sociopathic entities.  Tossing no longer needed cogs into the trash is what they do.

There are immediate benefits to my situation:

  • It's a gorgeous day in Chicago.  How can one be too upset?
  • I was let go instead of fired, hence no bridge was burned on my part.
  • I have a chance to explore other lines of employment besides the soul-sucking career I've been a part of.
  • More time to read Tink.
  • I can openly root for the plaintiffs in all the lawsuits filed against the big, big company.
  • Might figure out what that treadmill in the next room is used for.
  • Aren't taxes due in about a month?
  • More time to prepare for Sunday's fantasy baseball draft.
  • More time to complain about the results of Sunday's fantasy baseball draft.
  • No need to call in sick when I have a job interview.
  • No pressure to cut corners when faced with one of those damn six-hours-to-complete online job applications.
  • I've started three or four books.  I should finish one.

Ms. Stim is her usual tremendously supportive self.  She's also an excellent freelance writer.  In case you might ....

So for the next few hours, things are looking up.

I'm so sorry about what's happened- but thinking positive is the right thing to do. If you swing that way, treadmilling+"American Idol" or "America's Next Top Model" can be wonderful therapy. Good luck to you.
I think you saw this coming, right? No more time spent hating your soul-sucking job. You've got a good list started there Stim.

We'll look forward to reading more of that novel you were working on ...;;
Glad you've got a positive attitude. Want to join me for a visit to the Art Institute soon?
Oh I'm so with Alysa -- those are my two "must walk on treadmill as penance" shows. I do hope you find some fulfilling work soon, before you treadmill your ass off, or start to look like John Basedow.
We should talk soon. Sorry this happened, but I knew you weren't happy.
from everything you've said, it looks like you have the healthiest of outlooks on your situation. Here's hoping you get a job you love when you're ready, best wishes and good luck Stim. (Supportive partners are very nice.)
So sorry to hear, and best of luck. Hang in there. Hopefully my clicks on your ads help just a little....
Sorry Stim. I guess no one is going unscathed in this "minor recession".
Alysa - I'm about two weeks behind in Daily Shows and Colbert Reports. As long as I don't laugh so hard that I fall off the machine.

Scarlett - "It was a near twilight and drizzly night."

bpb - Art Institute sounds good.

BV - Basedow, ha. The thought of Basedow and his "sunbleached" hair makes me laugh.

OE - We'll talk.

bbd - Supportive partners are wonderful. Thanks. I picked up a D3100 earlier this week. Looks like I have time to play with it.

ChillerPop - Thanks. I kinda forget those ads generate the only income I'm making right now.

scanner - Thanks. Yeah, it's only a little bump in unemployment.
the end of middle class and time to breath...
h-Julie -- I'll put a candle in the window in case the middle class ever emerges from the dark forest again.
The company that I used to work fore was sold to a mega-company several years after I left. The group became a self-contained unit within the Great Maw. It lasted a few years, then, one day about two weeks before Thanksgiving, they were told that they were being shut down.

Best of good hunting to you, Stim, both in the job search and the fantasy draft.
Pilgrim - Thank you for the best wishes on both job hunt and draft. I simply don't fit well into a corporate environment.
Hey, now you've got time for Fug Madness. ;)
you can count on doors opening and because you are looking you'll see it when it happens.
bpb - I've missed the Fug.

Lady Dove - "When one door closes, another door opens. But it's the hallway that's hell."
STIm---Always good to welcome another CONSULTANT to the fold.

I think your list is great because of what it does NOT contain---i.e. "Advice on how to find work" Because there is no such thing.

It's an individual path. Here's to you finding yours!
Hey Stim -
Enjoy your beautiful day, and enjoy your free time until you get what I hope is a fulfilling new position!!! So what are you reading?
Chicago Guy -- I'm an all-purpose consultant. I can give you an opinion on how anything can work better. Just pay me.

bluesurly -- Thanks. I'm reading "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. Really, really good. How about you?
