I Share My Birthday With ...

Rate: 24 Flag

For those who took a quick glance, yes, today is my birthday.  Thanks for the good wishes.

Here are a few more who came into the world on the 9th of January.  Since I'm writing this from work, sorry, no photos.

Lady "Jennie" Jerome Churchill (b. 1854) - Mother of Winston to whom she gave birth in 1874, less than eight months after her marriage [I report, not speculate].  Considered one of the famous beauties of her time, Lady Churchill possessed great wit and charm.  Alexandra of Denmark, the Queen consort of the United Kingdom, wife of Edward VII found Jennie to be wonderful company -- despite knowing that Jennie had an affair with her husband, King Ed.  Lady Churchill had a few trists while married, including King Milan I of Serbia and -- ready for this? -- Karl, 8th Prince Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau.  After the death of Lord Churchill, Jennie married George Cornwallis-West, who was the same age as her son Winston.  They divorced after a few years.  Jennie's third marriage was to Montague Phippen Porch, who was three years younger than Winston [Rock on, Jennie].  Jennie died June 9, 1921 after slipping on a staircase while wearing new high-heeled shoes.  She broke her ankle.  Gangrene set in leading to her leg being amputated above the knee.  An artery in the amputated leg hemorrhaged, causing death.

Ida Rosenthal (b. 1886) -- Russian-born dressmaker/businesswoman, credited with the invention of the brassiere.  Originally developed as an accessory to help with the fit of the dresses, the Maidenform bra became a bestselling product on its own.  The Maidenform supported the breast rather than flattening it, as was the previous "style."  Ms. Rosenthal is also credited with standardizing cup sizes.  "Nature has made women with a bosom, so nature thought it was important. Who am I to argue with nature?"

Simone de Beauvior (b. 1908) -- French intellectual and writer, author of The Second Sex, the treatise upon which the modern feminist movement began.  A photo of, and a measuring tape next to, Jean-Paul Sartre proves that de Beauvior's taste in men was not limited to tall and handsome.  Or for that matter, limited to men.  Her 1943 novel She Came to Stay is a fictionalized account of Sartre's and Beauvior's affairs with two sisters, one of whom was a student of Beauvior's during her teaching days in Rouen.  Beauvior combined the sisters into one character.  Sartre wound up supporting both sisters.  One until his death, the other until she married  -- one of Beauvior's lovers [seriously, the French, mon dieu].  Later in life, Beauvior's novel, The Mandarins, won France's highest literary award, the Prix Goncourt.  The novel is a thinly veiled account of hers and Sartre's inner circle of philosophers and writers.  The book was dedicated to Chicago writer, Nelson Algren.  Algren was outraged by how much Beauvior revealed about their sex life.  Since her death in 1986, Beauvior's reputation as a philosopher has grown.  Considering their life-long friendship and that neither published without the other reading the manuscript, there can be no doubt that Sartre and Beauvior heavily influenced each other's writing.  They are buried next to each other.

Richard Nixon (b. 1913) -- Not proud of this one.  Commie-baiter, anti-semetic, member of the House Un-American Activities Committee, "Tricky Dick," , the Checkers speech, the Kennedy-Nixon debate that redefined presidential campaigns, sweaty upper lip, bomb Cambodia, went to China [for those of us in 1972, that was a real "Holy crap!" moment] "I am not a crook," Watergate, only President to resign the office, "If the President does it that means it's not illegal."  For all of his many, many, many, many, many flaws, and there were many of them, Nixon was a really intelligent man.  He was known to give an hour+ long talk on foreign affairs without referring to notes.

Lee Van Cleef (b. 1925) -- "Angel Eyes" in the Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood classic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.  And many other roles.

Judith Krantz (b. 1928) -- Writer.  Of sorts.  Went to high school with Barbara Walters.

Bart Starr (b. 1934) -- Hall of Fame quarterback of the Green Bay Packers [that's my team].  During the 1960s, with coach Vince Lombardi, led the Packers to five NFL championships in seven years, including the first two Super Bowls.  December 31, 1967, the NFL Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys, on the final play* of what became known as the Ice Bowl (game-time temperature was -15 degrees F), Starr scored the winning touchdown on the most famous play in NFL history -- a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 16 seconds left and no timeouts.  We will not speak of Starr's days as the head coach of the Packers.

*alright, it wasn't THE final play.  The Cowboys downed the kickoff and threw two incomplete passes.  That was the game.

Bob Denver (b. 1935) -- played TV icons Maynard G. Krebs and Gilligan.

Joan Baez (b. 1941) -- Folk singer and activist.  Numerous hits mostly written by other people (not that there's anything wrong with that).  Most notably helped bring Bob Dylan's music to a larger audience.  Has recorded albums in six different languages.  Dated Steve Jobs during the late 70s - early 80s.

Jimmy Page OBE (b. 1944) [That's right, Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire] -- Legendary rock guitarist and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer with the Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin.  Best known for scalding riffs and bedding 14-year old groupies.

Crystal Gayle (b. 1951) -- Country singer with 18 No. 1 country songs, including crossover hit "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue."  Besides her singing, best known for her good looks, near floor-length hair and being the sister of Loretta Lynn.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and future queen consort of the sixteen thrones of the Commonwealth realms, thank you very much (b. 1982) -- the lovely former Kate Middleton has ... made wearing stockings fashionable again in jolly ol' England.  Must be given props for choosing the right college in which to meet a future king.  Best known for ... ok, having a great chance of being Queen of England, but outside of that, best known for being the older sister of Pippa Middleton.  And it's true, one can buy styled underpants that will make your tush look more like Pippa's celebrated derriere.  Setting all this aside, I like Kate because (depending on which rumors you believe) she broke up with Prince Willy for a few months during their courtship.  She broke up with a future King of England.  She broke up with a future King of England because (again the rumors) he was paying too much attention to other young women.  And Willy apparently learned his lesson.  Bravo, Kate.  And Happy 30th Birthday.

First? Awesome! Happy Birthday, my man!

An impressive list to be sure...kudos especially (like you had something to do with it) for sharing your day with Ida Rosenthal, Jimmy Page, and Lee Van Cleef.
That's great, my friend. You also share your day with my lovely wife, every bit as graceful as Kate. Happy returns.
On your birthday I wish you much pleasure and joy;
I hope all of your wishes come true.
May each hour and minute be filled with delight,
And your birthday be perfect for you!

I hope you've had a terrific birthday today, Stim! I envy your sharing a b'day with Jimmy Page.
Smithery - First! Thanks. Ida, Jimmy, Lee and me are tight. Well, except for the two dead ones. And Jimmy.

d white - A most happy birthday to your charming wife.

FusunA - Nice. I like a little surrealism on my birthday. Thank you for the poem.

Linnnn - That's why I popped out on the 9th, to be with Jimmy. If I'd come out a day earlier, I'd be with Elvis and that would be too obvious.
That's quite some company you keep! I would have been happy enough with Gilligan. :) Happy Birthday.
Long time reader of yours, first time commenter.
Jimmy Page is cool, but man!, that Jennie Churchill totally rocks!

Happy Birthday!
Stim many happy returns of the day. Jennie Churchill was an American. Her father, Leonard a prominent businessman once known as "The King of Wall Street", hung signs "Jerome Avenue" along a plank road through what in now The Bronx, one of New York City's five boroughs. It divides the West and East Sections of the Bronx, in the same manner as Manhattan's Fifth Ave.
I was about ready to unfavorite you when I got to Tricky Dick, but inertia carried me to Bart Starr and you were SAVED!!!! Happy 39th!
Great. I got Dolly Parton...

HBD to you, however!!
Happy Birthday!! You seem to have been born in good company! Awesome! Mine?

I was born on the same day, different year, the day they tested the atom bomb!! I know, awesome, right?

Boom!! Just like me!! ~:D

Again, happy birthday!!
Hey, happy birthday!!
Stim: You missed sharing it with Elvis by one day! Still, Simone de Beauvoir is nothing to sneeze at. Add in Jimmy Page, I'd say you're in pretty good company. Considering Page's age, he might even be interested in 50 year-old groupies. :)

p.s. I always wondered if your avatar had any relevance but then again I guess we're all related. Happy Birthday Stim!
They are in great company! Happy Birthday!! (I did read Jennie Churchill's biography. Oh, how the other half lives.)
What a roster Stim. And great write-up to boot. I hadn't realized that Winnie's mum was so un-Victorian. How did Lytton Strachey miss her?
Many of those you share the date with are long gone. Happy you are here! And happy birthday, Stim!
Love Joan Baez! Awesome, Stim! And "The Catherine," from whom I may descend...apparently our British lines do stretch back to King Henry VIII; she being one of his Catherines...me thinks?! So says my Aunt Rosalind...who can know for sure! What a tirade of vitriol spewed in his direction, not so sure it be of fair lineage. Better to be known as the Irish Princess and descendent of an Irish King...so sayeth my dear Irish muther...off topic and a very, very happy birthday to my fellow Capricorn!
Well, I share my birthday with Stephen Sondheim. That is, if you don't count the 24 years, 6 months and 13 days difference.
J. P. - There's a lot to be for Gilligan. Not sure what it would be, but there would be a lot of it.

Midwest Muse - Welcome. Hard to believe that someone as stiff upper lip and all as Winston could have Jennie for a mother. And he adored her.

OE - I didn't know Jennie's dad was a mogul type. No lack of ego in that family.

Matt - Bart and the Packers of the 60s. Back when they knew how to play defense.

OM - I'll trade you Dolly for Krantz and Baez.

Tink - Destined to be radioactive. Outstanding!

Buffy - Hey, thank you.

Scarlett - If born on the 8th, I'd have been more psyched about sharing a b-day with Bowie. 50-year old groupies? Yeah, he'll go for it.

BV - You're too kind. Who wrote the bio?

John - Not born. Emerged from the ooze.

Abrawang - Strachey probably thought that Jennie was a typical Yank.

Lea - I'm happy to be here, too. Though I would like to meet some of those long gone at a cosmic January 9th get together.
You
Jimmy Page
And a buncha other people.

Right on
Happy Happy Birthday Stim!! Definitely the best of the bunch.
Cathy - With Hank VIII, you have so many Catherines to choose from.

cydkatie - Ah, what's a few days here and there?

Chicago Guy - With me and Jimmy, who needs the others?

h-Julie - Thank you much. Actually I think I'm fourth best in the bunch, at best.
That's quite a list. Happy birthday! Hope you're getting comfortably settled into the new place.
Quite an illustrious group--enhanced by your membership in it.
happy birthday!
mine is 9/11
Happy Birthday, one day late, alas (I couldn't get onto OS yesterday)! I hope you celebrated in style! Too bad you couldn't have all these fellow birthday celebrators come to a big party - what a crowd that would be! Thanks for the information on Churchill's mom. Cool lady, and a delightfully frivolous way to die. I remember seeing Crystal Gayle singing on TV when I was little, and I immediately wanted long hair like hers. Mine got to about butt-length before it got chopped off (I did not have beautiful locks like hers; mine are frizzy and thin). And Kate Middleton stole my man!!!!!!

Sorry...

Anyway, thanks for a very informative post, and happy birthday again and many happy returns!
bpb - The new place is coming along, one unpacked box at a time.

Con - Thank you. I'm what this group was missing: an anonymous schlub.

Roberto - The randomness of the universe can kinda blow.

Alysa - Kate stole your man!? That slut.
Deal. But I get to keep Edgar Allen Poe.
Wendy O isn't on OS lately, but she is the expert on personality and the date of your birth. Your post reminded me of her.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (a day late, so sorry!)
OM - Poe! You were hiding an ace up your sleeve.

DoS - Thank you. No apologies. You're dealing with the international date line and being about six days ahead of the States.
Your in such good company.....Have a great year...
You'll always be the Bob Denver of OS. I mean that in a good way.

I think.

Happy late birthday.
I just got a book on Jennie Churchill from the library. I'm stoked! Thanks Stim!

BTW, I get to share with the Queen Mum (if she was still sharing), President Obama, and the Sprouse Twins (Suite Life of Zack and Cody). I know, the Sprouse Twins are the ones that fill you with b-day jealousy.
Algis - Thank you. The group sets a high bar. Even Nixon for the wrong reasons.

Sheldon - "The Bob Denver of OS." Life knows no greater honor.

OM - Yeah, well, I didn't include Dave Matthews. So there.

Midwest Muse - Tell how you like the Churchhill book. I will be raging with jealousy as soon as I find out who these Sprouse Twins are.
Belated Happy Birthday! You get Nixon, I've got Trump.
Oh, Sally. Even with Nixon hanging around my neck, I feel sorry for you.
