Your average inconsistent X'er I used to care very much about being a good Republican, but I don't know what that means anymore. I now focus my energies on writing about growing up, the politics of Animal Welfare. I volunteer. I organize fund raisers. I do my best to raise awareness about cruelty, gay penguins, stupid people who keep wild animals as pets and showing funny cat videos. I also write extensively about my family who would probably laugh about this blog, then choke me (but not hard enough for it to be a felony). Rate: 5 Flag
Not far from me is a restaurant serving Lion Hamburgers.

I'm not sure what to say, but seriously why?

First off Africa is a continent, not a country. I just thought I needed to point that out the the author of this wonderful article.

Secondly, in America we tend not to eat cats. They just aren't part of the types of things we normally eat. It's kind of against our norms to eat lions.

African Lions are vulnerable for extinction, this means they are limited in numbers. According to the IUNC redlist:

"A species population reduction of approximately 30% is suspected over the past two decades (= approximately three Lion generations). The causes of this reduction (primarily indiscriminate killing in defense of life and livestock, coupled with prey base depletion: Bauer 2008), are unlikely to have ceased."

One the other hand we have 1.5 BILLION Cows on the planet right now.  Why not just eat a regular burger instead?

Taste like chicken?
The world needs fewer cows. Personally I like bison burgers. Far more taste than a cow burger.

The photo of mama and cub is beyond adorable.
Not hunted, not shot...how then pray tell do they kill them in order to butcher them?!!!

This hits a similar nerve (only more-so) as butchering horses to sell for consumption in foreign countries. If you treat it as a pet/companion animal, don't kill it for food. Or to look at it from the other side - lots of cultures do eat cats and dogs - why don't we butcher and send them all of our stray cats and dogs?!!!

So not good on so many levels.
blue - I'm right there with you, I'm as confused as I am disturbed about this.
Gah! Just because we can eat something doesn't mean we should, and there are lots of good reason to not eat lions. I hope the place fails, or better yet, that the owner gets eaten by a tiger.
They sell them because people will eat them. If people don't buy them... they won't sell them. (I would think it would be awfully stringy and lean.) I agree, it is in 'bad taste' simply because they are animals with limited breeding potential ... i.e. they are heading towards extinction. R.
