Your average inconsistent X'er I used to care very much about being a good Republican, but I don't know what that means anymore. I now focus my energies on writing about growing up, the politics of Animal Welfare. I volunteer. I organize fund raisers. I do my best to raise awareness about cruelty, gay penguins, stupid people who keep wild animals as pets and showing funny cat videos. I also write extensively about my family who would probably laugh about this blog, then choke me (but not hard enough for it to be a felony). Why is Mr. Twinklypants so tasty?

I’m a very conflicted omnivore. It’s quite simple.

When I see this:

I think about this:

My broad exposure to animals creates a conflict I that leaves me feeling guilty and hyper conscious when I eat meat or even think about it. If I spend more than a few minutesRead full post »

I was a Holiday Mall Elf

I spent two years at McDonald’s at the register back when they used Styrofoam and the happy meal toys were awesome. This was in a mall, and we had a great number of repeat customers. I had nicknames for them, like Mom with retarded kids or Creepy Guy from SamRead full post »

Prayer Garden

I was about 16 when I met Father Pete, he was fat, talkative and happy. He spent a lot of time around the kids in the parish, always looking to get us playing board games with him. He loved Scrabble, Risk and Monopoly. He had no qualms beating anyone, evenRead full post »

25 Years of Un-friending

I don’t really know where to start, except from the beginning. We met about 25 years ago right before we had boobs. It was a wonderful time. We rode bikes and ate too much candy. There were sleep overs and clandestine trips to the bathroom when we laughed hysterically atRead full post »

Second Graders are Weird!

This one is for GreenHeron - Is there something that you knew about yourself when you were a child, a bit of authentic self wisdom that you lost, then found again as an adult?

Yes!

Roofers from Hell : Father's Day 2000

Dad called. He talked faster than usual skirting around unimportant topics until he suddenly blurted out. "Come on over and I'll make you chili." I hate Dad's chili. I tried to find a way out, I was coming the next day for Father's day. Then he said "Damn girl, I justRead full post »
I have written about cooking with canned peas in the past. It's really a story about one of the little hurtles of being a child who needs to make dinner because mom is depressed. Growing up around crazy people made it imperative that I am skilled in the art of cooking canned vegetables/Read full post »

I'm not going to your Tea Party

The Arizona Tea Party has infused itself into my life. When it first started steeping I tried to be polite. Initially when I started getting the Facebook event requests I replied "maybe." In hindsight this was wrong, I should have ignored them completely. I should have just replied "no." I wasn'tRead full post »

Somebody Killed the Easter Bunny

I imagine in the spring of 1980 I had a bowl haircut. A painting that looked much like this hung on my wall across from my bed. I can remember frequently covering it with the orange lace curtains that hung in my room. I didn't care for Jesus looking at meRead full post »

Thank you Mothra

The stewardesses on Cathay Pacific are elegant and polite. They wore high heels, and impeccable neat little dresses. The flight from Hong Kong to Taipei was loaded down with things from Hong Kong's famous markets. Every inch of our plane was packed. I was 23 and it/

Why I want to punch both you and your baby

Sometimes travel stresses me out. Oh wait, scratch that. I'm not a good traveler. Nothing freaks me out more than being imprisoned in a flying sky bus full of random strangers hurtling through the air hundreds of miles an hour. The entire time I am sitting on the plane I am… Read full post »

A monkey peed on my head : Defending Zoos and Aquariums

I'll be honest, I never really cared about hoof stock until I saw a teeny brown 3 day old Arabian Oryx shivering on the ground and realized he was one of 1500 on the entire planet. That little animal taught me more about being an environmentalist than any lecture I ever… Read full post »

A letter of complaint to Dannon

Dear Dannon,

It's rainy in the desert so I spent more time than normal inside this weekend. Cleaning the house. Watching trashy television. I managed to catch up on the "Real Housewives" and find them shrill, drunk and chaotic. I watch anyway, because it's better than thinking about how to clean/… Read full post »

Home Alone with a Machine Gun

In the spring when I was 13, my uncle from Texas moved into our basement. He called me a little Yankee. He talked about making a lot of money and going back to Texas to buy land. He spent a lot of time comparing my brother and I to our cousins, who/

My First Rifle

My parents have a photo of me holding a rifle, where I'm smiling and in pigtails. In the photo I am standing next to my Grandpa near a once white-washed fence. I'm wearing a Holly Hobby shirt. He's wearing all denim: worn and patched. He has his hand on the topRead full post »

The Boy from South Texas

Dad often jokes that "in South Texas nobody noticed the great depression, not sure if it ever started or ended there. It was just bad all the time." He grew up in a one room house without plumbing or electricity. When he was 9 or 10 he and Grandpa built

Dear R,

Waiting for The Call: It Smells like Depression in my House

It's day four after the awesome interview and day 34 of the layoff.

The call-back hasn't come, yet. Last night when I came home he was doing yardwork, which is quite the feat for an out-of-shape-40-year-old-videogame-player. It's springtime in Arizona, and the rain from a few weeks ago has sprinkled… Read full post »
