You wake up late for work on election day.
You ask your boss for time off but he says, "No!"
You get out late from work, hurry down to church,
and stand in line for hours before they lock the door.
You got to fight for your right to vote!

Old lady from church who volunteered to work
demands to see your state-issued ID card.
You were born during segregation with dark skin.
State lost your birth certificate years ago.
You got to fight for your right to vote!

You are tired of gridlock in Washington.
They fight over gay marriage instead of jobs.
Republicans shout, "More tax cuts for the rich!"
Then slash unemployment funds and food stamps.
You got to fight for your right to vote!

I was born on this earth with a heart and mind.
I love my family and I enjoy working hard.
I want America to thrive with justice for all.
We occupy our home from sea to shining sea.
You got to fight for your right to vote!
