I am big music fan who listens to a vast array of music from The Cure to The Black Eye Peas and even Rancid. I try to listen to Korean music because I know that Korean pop is a big deal. When I read an article on the web somewhere specifically in Entertainment Weekly’s, “Jonas Brothers' tour openers the Wonder Girls: Will they conquer America?” I kind of found myself proud that Korea is trying real hard to be mainstream with the Western market, finally some Asians in the United States media that’s not porn or Kung Fu.
The group of girls called, “Wonder Girls” with the song titled “Nobody” is actually pretty catchy and stylistically cool with even a 1940’s American theme. They are currently touring with the less talented version of Hanson, Jonas Brothers, to make it in America. Although their song is pretty catchy I really don’t believe their going to capture the western market with the single, “Nobody” because their style of music, the Korea popish sound, does not sound like what is on the charts right now. Simply they are not American enough. What I know is that these girls work diligently. According to my very Korean mother who reads Korean news everyday they have been training to be pop stars since their adolescence and tried to keep up with their studies as much as their career interests. Since Koreans are hard workers I know that to me true. However I believe their sound isn’t enough to carry them over to the western market. In addition, the whole girl band and boy band thing hasn’t really hit it big in America since the 1990s and early 2000 so I am not sure if a girl band is a good thing in the western market for the Koreans right now.
What they should do is try to get one of the top rappers, such as Kayne West or TI to be apart of their songs so they might get some airtime on the radio. Also maybe an American producer as an aid to their band might work such as Timberland but I know it cost. I don’t believe on their own The Wonder Girls can make it. But I really want them to because Asians deserve some good press these days with Kim Jong Ill trying to nuke the world. I wish them the best, really. Korean Pride Y’all.
