This is Firecat scratching the post that Dan made for him and his pal Teaser, shown above on the deck.
SNOOZE BUDDIES
SWEET AS THEY MAY APPEAR, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THEY ARE REALLY VAMPIRE KITTIES!
You can get your own vampire kitties by contacting your local humane society!

Oh, and my cat was a shelter kitty too. They do rock.
Susanne, so sorry we didn't get your cats on the cover. Next time!
Thanks for the memories and the adorable humane society kitties (I've worked with animal rescue for year so am always heartened to see people doing the right thing).
(I hate to take attention away from the kitties, but I also like the sunburst pattern on your porch railing.)
Thanks for all your comments. We have a great life up here by Toad Lake.
I also agree with Julie about their names.
Our kids have pets from the Humane Society too. I can't imagine doing it any other way now.
I never thought of them being secondhand. I just thought they were on a journey home. And they let us live here still if we keep them in kitty treats and let them out of the deck often enough.
I have to agree that rescues rock. All our cats are rescues. Chance the Persian (aka the Big Puffball) walked in front of our car in an Albertson's parking lot, and we almost hit him. He was an unholy mess after who knows how long on the streets, but the sweetest kitty ever. He does know he has the good life. Lizzie the tortie we adopted from a foster group at 4 months, she'd been spoiled since birth so as far as she knows she has no reason to be grateful, but she is very very lovey. ;) Little Mouse the manx mix was adopted from the Multnomah County shelter when she was 1-2 years old; she is one of the friendliest cats I've ever met and, like Chance, she seems to realize she's got it good now.
The chow/lab mix we lost last year was a street rescue, the DH found him wandering around our neighborhood but could never catch him; one day he brought me along and Jack ran straight to me when I called him. He had been abused, and it took him awhile to completely trust Jeffrey, but me he adored from the start--our catchphrase was "Mommy is the source of all good things." Abby the Border Collie was about to be sent to the pound when we adopted her off Craigslist--she was only 10 weeks old so didn't have those awful street experiences, but she is just the most adorable silly rambunctious black and white rocket ever.
Yes, shelter babies rock. Plus, doing or adopting rescues is good for the soul. And I'm sure it racks up Karma points. :)
