Library book shelves rise from the flood.

These book shelves were designed and built by my husband, Dan the Man.  He also did the lighting plan, including wiring and special dimming and switches for different areas, so that the lights shine down the face of the shelves and you can easily read the spines and see the contents.  The low shelves below with the television contain magazine cases and large format books.  Eventually, they will be replaced with cabinets and shelves that match the shelves above.  All the wood is Douglas Fir, vertical grain in most cases, including baseboards.  The saltillo tile floor, framing, drywalling, door finishing and hanging, and closet interior shelving were also completely designed and constructed by Dan the Man.  We worked on the design together.   You can see why he is my personal hero and the love of my life.  I used my bonus to buy him the big tv last year.

Below are pictures of what the room looked like during construction.   You can see that he had recently drywalled after extensive wiring and lighting had been installed.  The carpet was ripped out after a flood caused a nearly complete remodelling of the space.  All the old book cases were ruined, but the books were rescued.

This doesn't even begin to discuss the cookbooks in the kitchen, the boxes of books that haven't a home until Dan builds even more shelves. But he is working on the kitchen now because it was interrupted by the flood and I haven't had a microwave for two years. There is always a leaning tower on either side of the lamp on my night table. There are books on tables here and there, there are books in every room save the toilet. We just don't LEAVE them there...
What a beautiful set of bookshelves!!

And some rather lovely floors, too.
Oh, those bookshelves are GORGEOUS. Dan the Man sounds like my very own DH, if we don't like something he just wades in and fixes it, rebuilds it, redesigns it, etc. Aren't they handy guys to have around? :)
Love these!
I just want to cozy up in that green chair with a stack of books next to me.

Dan has a kind face, too.
Both of us were raised by people who had been through the depression and WWII. That self sufficiency is reflected in these things we do for our own home.

Two years ago the lower level of our house was flooded by our water heater while we were out of town. While we were able to rescue our books, all the furniture, carpet, drywall etc. was ruined.

Upstairs steam dripped down the walls, mildew and mold began growing here and there. Some furniture was destroyed. Water colors were damaged, prints were curled, bowed, frames came apart or warped. It was a terrible mess.

These pictures show our response. I'm glad you like them!
Good job. They are beautiful.
I can't see the pics! Boo-hooo why not? Got the boxed, red X instead
The pictures appear to be back up at 12:22 Pacific time.
They are beautiful! And lighting to boot! I am envious :-)

The love of my life keeps my car running perfectly and always spic and span clean but he's never tried bookshelves.
Rebuilding from the ruins. Something important to ALL of us these days. Our books are in an unfinished basement. But if we every get out of th3e financial troubles we're swimming in right now. . .this is a dream.

Thank you so much letting us take a look!
Ah, Chicago, you caught my intention! Also, I just like to write valentines to Dan.
A beautiful sight, Susanne!
Oh, these are just awesome!

I am really coveting all the bookshelves around here. Thanks for showing them to us, Susanne.
