It's So, So Green at Toad Hollow Today ...

Cuttings (later)

This urge, wrestle, resurrection of dry sticks,
Cut stems struggling to put down feet,
What saint strained so much,
Rose on such lopped limbs to a new life?
I can hear, underground, that sucking and sobbing,
In my veins, in my bones I feel it --
The small waters seeping upward,
The tight grains parting at last.
When sprouts break out,
Slippery as fish,
I quail, lean to beginnings, sheath-wet.

Teaser loves to check out what's going on down on ground level...

While we call our home Toad Hollow, it's also been called the house of the entwined cedars.  Behind the Aurora Dogwood is an enormous Douglas Fir.  Just beyond them up hill is a Stellar Pink Dogwood, shown in the very next photo.
Entwined Cedars & Aurora Dogwood

There is an Eddies White Wonder Dogwood in the foreground, and to it's left is the Stellar Pink. Look at that Rhododendron color!

The Rhododendrons are blooming one by one, we've bought different varieties with differing bloom times to extend the time we get to enjoy them.

The Clematis have been blooming in successive waves and growing and growing and growing like never before up the posts that support our deck.

My editor demands that I upload a photo of him too...

There is so much to do.  This began as 15 square yards of 4-way garden soil.  It seems that we haven't moved much of it yet ...

Childhood is a toad in the garden, a

happy toad. All toads are happy

and belong in gardens. A toad to Diana!"

Talk about a little piece of heaven! Jelousing down here in Hotville.
I remember you live in Redneckistan. It's only warm here if you stand in the sunbeams. Thanks Michael.
Very lush where you live.
Very nice. I'm jealous too even though I know it's a lot of hard work. Wish I could be there to enjoy it a little.
Ah, love this piece! And the editor. What a handsome puss!
Three thank yous are in order and here they are:

Sheepy, the lushness is in th woods, but the garden is lush because of a lot of labor, digging up submerged rocks and distributing a lot of garden soil that is free of rocks so that plants stand a chance here.

Kara, there is a reason we bring you big bouquets when we bring Aidan home. Bringing the garden along is the best we can do...

Emma, I know you are familiar with the wonderful environment we have for gardening here. Firecat is pleased with your comments and your perfect grammar.
The whole place just shouts "LIFE"! Happy spring/summer!
Same to you and plenty of it!
these make me miss my washington a bit. I love washington trees. and the rain is wonderful for gardeners that's for sure. I also have cat envy. cute.
Such a buffet of green. I can tell it smells really good there!

Every year I enjoy these pics as your garden unfolds. I look forward to it and am never disappointed. Allie, Gracie and Jake said to say "hi" to their feline cousins. ;-)

I posted a comment earlier but it disappeared. I so enjoy your photo essays. You have created a little paradise out there on Toad Lake. God, I love rhodies! Roethke is one of my favorite word smiths too.
what a beautiful place to have landed!
There was almost no garden when we moved here. Dan cut down quite a few abandoned and mistreated former Christmas trees that were thoughtlessly planted. He and a fellow who lived nearby pulled a huge stump out of the corner of our yard. Some of the ferns were here and out of deference to nature we have left them where they grew and have gardened all around them and encouraged their spawn in the woods behind our house. It was the potential for this garden that we paid for when we bought our home. Years ago, someone said in a leadership ceremony I was in: "Flowers just naturally happen around Susanne." I think my grandmother made me like that. My Grandfather definitely was the model for partners in such crime. He would have loved Dan.
