Look straight ahead and down, and breathe freely.

Common mistakesElbows are bent when lifting the hands.Raising the head to look upward.

Corrections Straighten the elbows to touch the ears with the arms when lifting and pushing up the hands.

Focus the mind on the hands instead of looking at them when they are lifted.Functions and effects

By moving the upper limbs and raising the heels, the Qi or internal energy of Sanjiao, the three portions of the body cavities housing the internal organs, is regulated. Moreover, all the vital energy is mobilized from Sanjiao, from the Sanyin channels of both hands and feet, and from the internal organs.

This routine also helps to improve the mobility of the shoulder joints, enhance the strength of the limb muscles, and invigorate the overall blood circulation.

Ancient mnemonic rhymeImagine that you are looking up when pushing the hands up above the Tianmen point, and stand on balls of the feet, keeping the upper body straight. Apply strength to the buttocks and to the sides of the upper body. Keep the teeth clenched. Touch the tongue to the upper gums to produce saliva, and regulate the breath through the nose. Feel peace of mind. Withdraw the fists slowly down, and apply strength where needed.
